Chapter

The first time I saw Adrian Knight in person, he was signing the papers that would destroy my family.

He didn’t look up when my father finished speaking.

Didn’t hesitate.

Didn’t blink.

Just signed.

The pen moved smoothly across the contract like he wasn’t dismantling thirty years of legacy with a flick of his wrist.

My father’s empire.

The Rossi Group.

My grandfather’s life’s work.

Gone.

I stood at the far end of the conference room, fingers curled into my palms so tightly that my nails cut crescents into my skin. The glass walls reflected Manhattan’s skyline behind us—cold, glittering, indifferent.

Adrian finally lifted his head.

His eyes found mine.

Dark. Calculating. Unreadable.

He knew exactly who I was.

“Miss Rossi,” he said evenly, closing the leather folder. “I assume you’ve been informed.”

Informed.

Like this was a meeting about quarterly profits instead of my family’s collapse.

I stepped forward. “Informed that you’ve been swallowing our shares for months? Yes.”

A flicker of something—amusement?—crossed his face.

My father cleared his throat nervously. “Valentina, please.”

No. Don't please me Dad.

Not now.

“You could have negotiated,” I continued, my voice steady despite the storm inside me. “Instead, you chose a hostile takeover.”

Adrian leaned back in his chair. Perfect posture. Perfect suit. Perfect control.

“I prefer efficiency.”

Of course he did.

Adrian Knight was known for corporate executions. Companies didn’t survive his interest—they disappeared.

And now we were next.

My father reached for the final document on the table. His hand trembled slightly.

“There is… another option,” he said.

I turned to him sharply.

“What option?”

Silence stretched across the room.

Adrian’s gaze didn’t leave my face.

My father swallowed. “A merger. Through marriage.”

The words didn’t make sense at first.

They floated between us like smoke.

“Marriage,” I repeated slowly.

“Yes,” my father said, avoiding my eyes. “If you and Mr. Knight marry, the companies combine rather than collapse.”

The world didn’t tilt.

It didn’t shatter.

It simply went very, very still.

I looked at Adrian.

He wasn’t surprised.

That’s when I understood.

This wasn’t a desperate idea my father had just invented.

This had already been discussed.

“You knew,” I said quietly.

Adrian’s voice was calm. “It was presented as a mutually beneficial solution.”

Mutually beneficial.

My chest tightened.

“You want to marry me,” I said, disbelief sharpening each word, “to finish absorbing my family’s company?”

“I want stability in the transition,” he corrected. “The market responds better to alliances than bloodbaths.”

“So this is public relations?”

“It's a strategy.”

My father stepped closer to me. “Valentina, this is the only way to save what’s left.”

“What’s left?” I laughed under my breath. “You’ve already handed him everything.”

“Not everything,” Adrian said.

His eyes moved slowly over my face.

“Not yet.”

Heat crept up my spine—anger, humiliation, something else I refused to name.

I had spent years building my own credentials. MBA. Strategic planning. I had plans for Rossi Group expansion.

And now I was being offered like a final asset.

A bargaining chip.

“If I say no?” I asked.

Adrian didn’t hesitate.

“Then the acquisition proceeds tomorrow morning.”

Brutal. Honest.

My father’s voice cracked. “Valentina… please.”

I looked at the man who had raised me. He looked smaller today. Older. Defeated.

For the first time in my life, I saw fear in his eyes.

The choice wasn’t really a choice.

It was a sacrifice.

I inhaled slowly.

Then I looked back at Adrian Knight.

“When would the wedding be?”

His jaw tightened—just slightly. As if he hadn’t expected compliance so quickly.

“Within the week.”

Efficient.

Of course.

“Fine,” I said.

My father exhaled in relief.

Adrian stood.

He extended his hand across the table.

“Welcome to the future, Mrs. Knight.”

I stared at his hand for a long second before placing mine in it.

His grip was firm. Warm.

Controlled.

But when our skin touched, something unexpected flickered between us—sharp and electric.

His eyes darkened.

Just for a second.

Then it was gone.

The wedding was small.

Strategic.

Press controlled. Investors were reassured. Headlines spun into something elegant:

Billionaire Merger Sealed by Marriage.

I wore white.

He wore power.

When he slid the ring onto my finger, his thumb brushed against my pulse point.

It was steady.

I refused to let him see it race.

“Smile,” he murmured under his breath as cameras flashed.

“Are you?” I whispered back.

His lips curved faintly. “I always am.”

Liar.

That night, I stood in the master bedroom of Adrian Knight’s penthouse overlooking the city.

It didn’t feel like home.

It felt like territory.

The door opened behind me.

I didn’t turn.

“You can relax,” he said. “You look like you’re preparing for battle.”

“Maybe I am.”

His footsteps were slow, measured, until he stood beside me at the window.

From this height, the city looked small.

Controllable.

“Let’s clarify something,” he said. “This marriage is a contract. Nothing more.”

I folded my arms. “You don’t have to worry. I’m not delusional.”

“Good.”

He removed his cufflinks, placing them on the dresser with precise movements.

“You’ll have access to the social accounts. Public appearances are expected. Internally, you’ll hold a ceremonial position.”

“Ceremonial?” I turned sharply. “I have a business degree.”

“And you’re emotionally attached to the company. That makes you unpredictable.”

Unpredictable.

I stepped closer to him.

“Or maybe it makes me invested.”

For a moment, something in his expression shifted.

Not anger.

Interest.

“You think I’m the villain here,” he said quietly.

“Aren’t you?”

He studied me for a long moment.

Then he stepped closer.

Too close.

I felt the heat of him. The clean scent of his cologne. The quiet intensity in his gaze.

“If I wanted to destroy your family,” he said softly, “I would have.”

The air changed.

“You already did.”

“No,” he said.

His hand lifted slightly—hesitated—then dropped.

“You have no idea what destruction looks like.”

The words weren’t cruel.

They were personal.

Before I could respond, his phone buzzed.

He stepped away to answer it.

“Yes?”

His expression hardened as he listened.

“When?” he asked sharply.

Silence.

Then:

“Who authorized that release?”

My stomach tightened.

He ended the call and looked at me.

Something was wrong.

“What happened?” I demanded.

His jaw flexed.

“Your father transferred confidential internal documents out of Rossi servers an hour ago.”

Ice slid through my veins.

“That’s impossible.”

“He sent them to a private buyer.”

“No,” I whispered. “He wouldn’t.”

Adrian’s gaze was unreadable again. Controlled. Strategic.

“Congratulations, Mrs. Knight,” he said quietly. “It appears your family just declared war.”

My phone buzzed in my hand at the same moment.

A message from my father.

Three words.

I am sorry.

Then another notification flashed across the screen.

Breaking News Alert:

Rossi Group Under Investigation for Corporate Fraud. Arrest Warrant Issued.

My heart stopped.

I looked up at Adrian.

His face had gone cold.

Completely cold.

And at that moment, I didn’t know if I had just married my savior…

Or the man who was about to destroy us for real.
