Amara Johnson had always been there. Not in a flashy way. Not the one people noticed.

But quietly. Steadily.

Like the background hum of a song you didn’t realize you loved until it played too loudly to ignore.

They met when they were twelve.

Matteo Rodriguez, with his easy smile and messy hair, had girls falling at his feet just by existing.

And Amara? She was there to offer him a hand, a word, a laugh whatever he needed, even when he didn’t know it himself.

She was the first one who noticed when he was upset, the first one to make him laugh when the world felt heavy, that one friend he didn't know he needed. And he… he didn’t see her. Not really. At least, not then.

Years passed. Middle school, high school, Amara stayed the same. Always there. Always supportive. Always unnoticed.

And slowly, without him realizing it at first, Matteo began to notice her differently.

It was subtle at first, a longer look, a smile that lingered, a sudden need to hear her voice.

By the time they were seventeen, he couldn’t ignore it anymore. Amara had been his constant, his anchor, his quiet miracle. And suddenly, he started to want more than friendship.

But wanting more didn’t mean he knew how to ask for it. Not yet.

Because some hearts take years to realize what’s been standing in front of them all along.

And some promises…

Don’t get spoken until it’s almost too late.

Eight Years Later...

-----

The studio lights were too bright. They always were.

Amara smiled anyway, polished, effortless, practiced.

The kind of smile people trusted.

The kind that made them believe everything was okay…

Even when it wasn’t.

“Three… two… one…”

The red light blinked on.

“Good evening, Seattle. I’m Amara Johnson, and tonight’s top story—”

Her voice was steady. Calm. Controlled.

No one watching would ever guess how much she had learned to hide behind it.

Because eight years ago, Amara Johnson wasn’t this woman.

She wasn’t composed. She wasn’t guarded.

She wasn’t… empty.

Eight years ago, she loved someone.

And he destroyed her.

“Cut! That’s a wrap!”

The tension in her shoulders loosened as the cameras shut off. Amara exhaled slowly, reaching up to unclasp the mic from her collar.

“Great job tonight,” a producer said in passing.

She gave a small nod. “Thanks Jeff.”

Routine.

Everything was routine. That’s how she survived.

The newsroom buzzed around her. Phones ringing, keyboards clacking, voices overlapping into a familiar kind of chaos. It used to overwhelm her.

Now?

It grounded her.

“Amara!”

She turned at the sound of her name, already knowing who it was.

Ryan.

He walked toward her with that same easy grin he’d had since they were kids, like comfort had taken human form.

“Don’t tell me you’re staying late again,” he said, leaning against her desk.

“I have a segment to review,” she replied, slipping papers neatly into her bag. “Some of us actually take our jobs seriously.”

He scoffed. “Please. You’re the best anchor they have. You could walk in half asleep and still outshine everyone.”

She shot him a look. “Flattery won’t get you anywhere.”

“Worth a shot.” Ryan paused, studying her a second longer than usual. “You okay?”

Amara didn’t hesitate. “I’m fine.”

Always fine.

He didn’t push. He never did. But he always knew.

“Attention, everyone!” The manager’s voice cut clean through the room, pulling all focus to the center.

Amara barely looked up at first, still organizing her things.

“We’ve got someone new joining us today. Well technically not new,” he added with a chuckle. “He’s part of the ownership now, so… be nice, he is the new boss.”

A few laughs echoed.

Amara sighed quietly.

Another executive. Another disruption.

She zipped her bag.

“I’d like you all to meet…”

And then she heard his name.

“Matteo Rodriguez.”

Everything inside her stopped. Not slowed. Not hesitated.

Stopped.

Her fingers tightened around the edge of her desk.

"No." She thought to herself. "No, it couldn’t be."

But then she looked up. And there he was.

Older.

Sharper.

Different…

And yet not at all.

The same dark eyes. The same quiet intensity.

The same presence that filled a room without even trying. The same face she had memorized once upon a time.

Back when she was eighteen and foolish enough to believe in forever.

Matteo.

Her Matteo.

Her chest tightened so suddenly she forgot how to breathe.

Eight years.

Eight years of silence.

Eight years of questions.

Eight years of trying to forget a boy.

Who became the man standing right in front of her.

Alive.

Real.

And looking straight at her.

For a second, just one, his expression shifted.

Recognition.

It hit him too.

She saw it.

Felt it.

That same invisible thread pulling tight between them. Like it had never snapped at all.

And just like that…

Amara Johnson smiled. Calm. Polite. Professional.

Like she had no idea who he was.

“Welcome to the team,” she said smoothly.

Like he hadn’t once been the reason she couldn’t breathe. Like he hadn’t left her without a goodbye.

Like he hadn’t taken a piece of her with him eight years ago…and never gave it back.

Matteo didn’t smile.

Not fully.

But his eyes. His eyes never left hers.

And in that moment, Amara knew one thing for certain.

Pretending she didn’t know him…

Was going to be the hardest thing she had ever done.
