Amara’s POV
The moon looked too bright for a night that was going to destroy me.
I remember thinking that first, standing at the edge of the Silver Howl ceremonial grounds with
my hands shaking so badly inside my sleeves that I prayed no one could see it. The air smelled
like smoke and pine and too many people breathing too close together. Wolves everywhere.
Alphas. Betas. Nobles. All of them waiting for something I was not sure I deserved to be part of.
The mating ceremony.
Eighteen years old. The night the Moon Goddess was supposed to reveal your fated mate.
I had told myself I did not care.
That it was just tradition. Just stories adults used to make young wolves behave.
But my heart did not listen to my lies.
It kept hoping anyway.
My mother stood behind me, her hand resting on my shoulder like she was trying to hold me in
place. Mira Blackwood never showed fear easily, but I could feel it in the way her fingers
pressed into my skin a little too tightly.
“Just breathe,
” she whispered.
I nodded even though I could barely breathe at all.
Somewhere in the crowd, I knew Nora was looking for me. My only real friend. The only person
who ever made me feel like I was not invisible. I wanted to find her face, but I was too scared to
look away from the center of the field.
Because he was there.
Kael Ashford.
Future Alpha of the Shadow Moon Pack.
Even from a distance, he looked like someone the world had already decided to follow. Strong.
Certain. Untouchable. And beside him stood Lyra Voss, dressed like she had already won
something no one else was allowed to fight for.
I did not know why I noticed him so much.
I was not supposed to notice him at all.
A horn sounded across the field and everything went silent.
Elder Selene stepped forward, her voice carrying like it belonged to the sky itself. She spoke
about bonds and destiny and the Moon Goddess choosing without mistake. I tried to listen, but
my thoughts kept slipping away.
Because I could feel something strange in my chest.
Not pain.
Not fear.
Something like… pulling.
Like something inside me was being called by something outside me.
I did not understand it.
Then it happened.
Kael moved.
He stepped forward into the center of the field, and the entire crowd shifted with him like he was
gravity itself. My breathing stopped when his eyes moved across the crowd.
And landed on me.
For a moment, everything disappeared.
The noise. The people. The night.
It was just him looking at me like I had suddenly become something visible.
Something real.
My stomach twisted.
Lyra noticed it too. I saw her move closer to him, her hand touching his arm like she was
reminding him where he belonged.
He looked away.
The moment broke.
I told myself I imagined it.
I told myself it meant nothing.
But my heart would not calm down.
Then Kael spoke.
“I, Kael Ashford,
” his voice cut through the silence,
It took me a second to understand the words.
“reject you as my fated mate.
”
Because they did not make sense.
Not in the way they were supposed to happen. Not in front of everyone. Not like that. My body
went cold and then hot at the same time, like something inside me had just been ripped open.
Pain exploded in my chest.
Not normal pain.
Something deeper.
Something that felt like a bond snapping inside me even though I did not even know it was fully
there.
I stumbled back without meaning to.
The crowd reacted instantly.
Gasps. Then whispers. Then laughter.
I could hear them like knives.
Low ranked.
She thought she mattered.
How embarrassing.
I could not look at anyone. Not my mother. Not Nora. Not him.
Especially not him.
Because Kael was still looking at me.
But his eyes were different now.
Like I was already something he had finished deciding about.
“I choose Lyra Voss,
” he said.
And just like that, she stepped into his side like she had always belonged there.
Something inside me shattered so completely I thought I might fall apart on the spot.
But I did not cry.
I refused to.
Not there.
Not for them.
My mother called my name, but I could barely hear her over the ringing in my ears.
So I turned.
And I ran.
I ran past the field, past the ceremony, past every pair of eyes that had just watched me be
erased.
The forest swallowed me whole.
I did not stop running even when the branches cut into my skin. I did not stop even when my
lungs burned. I did not stop because stopping would mean thinking.
And thinking hurt more than anything.
But then I heard it.
Footsteps behind me.
Not pack guards.
Rogues.
My blood turned cold.
I stopped in the dark between the trees and tried to breathe quietly, but fear was already
choking me. Shapes moved around me. Eyes glowing. Low growls circling closer.
There were too many.
I was alone.
Completely alone.
“Please,
” I whispered without meaning to.
The first one attacked.
Pain exploded through my arm as I hit the ground. Another came. Then another. Everything
became chaos and fear and the sound of my own heartbeat trying to escape my body.
I screamed.
And then something inside me answered.
Heat burst through my chest like fire breaking through ice. My bones shifted. My body broke and
rebuilt itself in ways I could not understand.
The pain should have ended me.
Instead it made me stronger.
When I opened my eyes again, the world felt different.
Louder.
Clearer.
Stronger.
The rogues stepped back.
Afraid.
I stood slowly, my body shaking but no longer weak. Something inside me was awake now.
Something ancient. Something powerful.
The forest went silent.
And far away, back at the ceremony grounds, Elder Selene suddenly felt it.
Her eyes widened.
“She has awakened,
” she whispered.
And in that moment, I understood something terrifying.
My life had not ended tonight.
It had only just begun.
