I was at Emma house , I was lying on the bed and scrolling through my phone , looking
through videos of pasteries and bakeries
“One day this is going to be mine “ I said to my self while smiling
“Our future baker” Emma said
I smiled
“Yess”
Then my phone suddenly rang , it was my mother
“Mia please can you come home? it’s an emergency
I quickly sat up.
“An emergency? What happened?”
“I’ll explain when you get home. Just come quickly.
”
When i got home , i saw my father sitting on the couch and My mother beside him
“What’s the emergency “
My father was quiet
I looked at my mum then at my dad
“Dad , Mum what’s the emergency “
My father spoke
“Mia my daughter, you know things has not been easy for us “
He told me about the debt and how we were close to losing the house
“Why didn’t you guys say anything”
“we didn’t want you to be worried my love “My mother said
I looked at my father
“I will look for a job”
My father looked at her before speaking “Mia there is a way we can fix this “
“What way dad? ”
“You have to get married” My father said
I couldn’t believe what my father just said
“Dad you can’t be serious, I have not even finished school and you want me to get married “
My mother looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Mia, please listen to your father.
”
“No, Mum. How am I supposed to listen to this?”
My father tried to explain.
“This marriage could help us pay off the debt.
”
I stood up.
“So that’s it? You want me to get married because of money?”
“No one is trying to sell you off,
” my mother said quickly.
“Then what am I supposed to call this?”
My father said the name “ Ryan . He is the”
I grabbed my bag and walked toward the door.
“Mia!”
I ignored him.
“Mia, come back!”
I opened the door and walked out.
I couldn’t even listen to another word my father had to say so I left and went back to Emma
house
“Emma you won’t believe what my father said to me,
” I said while crying
Emma hugged me
“Why are you crying? What did he say” Emma said
“He said I have to get married in other to save the house and the business and for him to
pay off his debt” I said while crying
Emma looked at me with sympathy
“Babe don’t cry, we will find a way out of this”
“How? there is nothing we can do. my father is in a lot of debt .no matter how hard I work I
can pay off his debt . my father is right maybe I should just get married” I said
Emma sighed
“No! what about you dream to be a baker? , to own a bakery, what about finishing school.
you want to give up on that dream?”
“If it means I have to , so be it I have to help my family I just never thought it would be this
way” I sighed
“My family could lose everything.
”
Emma moved closer to me.
“You don’t have to decide everything today.
”
“But my family needs help.
”
“And you think marrying a stranger is the only way?”
I didn’t answer.
I knew she was right.
But what other choice did I have?
Emma looked at me before taking a deep breath
“Okay, let’s go outside for a walk to clear your mind and maybe we can get ice cream”
I looked at her with a smile
“You know how much I love ice cream”
She replied “I know babe”
We left the house and started walking.
For a while, neither of us said anything.
The fresh air felt good.
I needed to get away from everything, even if it was only for a little while.
After we finished our ice cream, I decided to go home.
Emma hugged me before I left.
“Call me if you need anything.
”
“I will.
”
“And Mia?”
I looked at her.
“Don’t give up on your dream.
”
I smiled sadly.
“I’ll try.

I returned home after the walk and the ice cream , my mum called my name
“Mia please come and have dinner “
I refused to answer
“Mia pls at least speak to me” my father said
My little sister noticed something was wrong with me
“Mia are you okay, you know you can talk to me ” lily said
“I’m to tired to talk ” I said with a cold voice
Lily looked at me for a few seconds.
“Okay.sorry for bothering you “
I went to my room and slam the door hard . I didn’t care if anyone heard
I layed on my bed staring at the ceiling and started thinking about what dad said.
“Marriage to a guy named Ryan. Who exactly is he and why does my dad wants me to get
married to him “
“How could my life change in one day” I said to my self before falling asleep
I woke up and got ready to see Emma , Then my father called my name
“Mia pls come downstairs and have breakfast. I cooked”
I always rushed downstairs when I heard my dad cooked but today was different,
I was still sad about the whole situation .
Then someone knocked it was my mum
“Mia I know you are mad at us at least come and eat , your food is getting cold”
I didn’t reply
She kept knocking, I opened the door and she tried to hug me but I pushed her away
“Please don’t try and act innocent mum , you of all people knew about my dreams,but you
went ahead to sell me off for money , is that how worthless I am” I said why tears were
slowly building
“Honey don’t say that” mum said while crying
I left the room
“Mia don’t leave”my mum shouted
I didn’t want to listen to what else she had to say so I left ,
I was angry at everything & everyone
I thought my life was already falling apart. I didn’t know it was only the beginning. Because
by the end of the week, I would meet the stranger who was supposed to become my
husband.
