Annabeth 's POV

“No, no, no, no.” I screamed as I looked at the paper.

I wasn't married. No I was, no I wasn't. I was confused. I wanted to go out, scream and burn the papers.

In my hands were the marriage certificate I had found on my bed that morning. Or what I thought was my marriage certificate.

“Oh isn't Mylo the cutest.” I thought to myself when I saw them.

Yesterday was our second anniversary. I had just signed off another piece of the Blackwell legacy to Mylo, believing I was building our future together.

“Love.” I scoffed to myself.

I scanned the paper again, searching for the government seal. It wasn’t there. How have I never noticed?

Tears had begun to roll down my cheeks, I used the back of my palm to wipe them off.

“Mylo!” “Mylo!” I shouted with my voice cracking, he was not in the house.

I ran downstairs to my car, my lawyer had to see this, something had to be wrong somewhere.

“Open the gates!” I shouted.

My eyes were already blurry and I could feel my mascara being ruined.

“But ma'am…” my gateman wanted to insist.

“Don't make me repeat myself, open the damn gates!” I screamed.

He had no choice than to obey.

I got in and drove very fast.

“Calm down Annabeth, breathe, breathe.” I whispered to myself like the hot tears weren't flowing freely.

I parked at his office. To see my lawyer, you had to schedule a time for the meeting, I didn't schedule, I didn't care.

I banged at the door really hard, he came up looking shocked. He had a client inside, I didn't even look their way.

“Explain this.” I said dumping the papers on his desk, ignoring the client.

“A moment please.” He said to the man sitting there.

He brought me to his other office, the lavender smell welcomed me, calming my nerves.

“Mrs West…” he started.

“Explain this!” I said shouting.

He brought out the file under the desk and pushed it to me.

“What's this?” I asked, my head already hurt from all the shouting and running.

“Read.” His voice was stern.

I read the paper the first time but I couldn't comprehend what I read, I read it again and my eye fell on one thing “contract marriage, till he's stable.”

The marriage was a contract, a means for me to help Mylo get back on his feet from being broke.

“It's a lie.” I whispered.

“The seal says it all Mrs West, or rather Miss Blackwell.”

“No, it's a lie, it has to be a lie!” I shouted.

I looked down at the file again, hoping there was something that could prove him wrong. Instead, another document caught my attention.

I froze.

My eyes moved across the page until I saw the name at the top.

Blackwell Atelier.

My heart dropped.

“This…” I whispered.

My lawyer didn’t say anything.

I looked at the document again, then at him.

“I signed this yesterday.”

“Yes.”

My voice shook. “Why is it in this file?”

“Because it was part of the documents submitted with the contract.”

I stared at the papers in disbelief.

Blackwell Atelier.

The fashion division of Blackwell Enterprises. The company I had just signed over to Mylo yesterday.

I let out a bitter laugh as tears filled my eyes again. He had probably watched me sign those papers and smiled, knowing exactly what he was doing.

I remembered how happy I had been yesterday.

Now I couldn’t even look at his name without feeling sick.

How stupid could I have been?

“You knew?” I asked.

“I knew about the documents. I didn’t know you weren’t aware of the agreement.”

My eyes burned again.

I closed the file and pushed it away from me.

I had trusted him with the legacy my grandfather left me, all because I believed he loved me.

My lawyer stood up and walked toward the door.

“Where are you going?” I asked.

“You need to leave, Miss Blackwell.”

I didn’t argue.

I grabbed my things and walked out of the office.

Once I entered my car, I broke down.

I sobbed until my head hurt even more. I closed my eyes to remember my grandfather’s words.

*Flashback

“Annabeth, you know your parents are gone. Blackwell Enterprises will be yours one day.”

I stared at him, unable to imagine carrying that kind of responsibility.

“With great power comes great responsibility, sunshine. Your father should have inherited the company, but now it’s yours.”

“Grandpa…”

“You can do this.” He squeezed my hands. “I know you can.”

Two days later, he officially passed the company down to me. I smiled for the cameras, but all I could think about was how much I wished he could stay.

He died that night.

“End of flashback

He died that night.

No.

I wasn’t going to sit here and cry over him.

If Mylo had lied about our marriage, then I needed to know what else he had lied about.

I was going home.

This time, I wasn’t going to ask Mylo to explain himself.

I was going to make him tell me the truth.

“Mylo!” “Come out you son of a bitch.” I screamed.

“Lady, lady. What's the high tone for?” He said coming downstairs with a robe on his body.

“Don't play dumb you idiot. What's this?” I asked showing him the papers.

“Our marriage certificate?” He shrugged.

“No, it's fake. Everything is fake.” I said, fighting back my tears.

“Was anything ever real? The love you professed, the engagement? Was it?” I asked, my voice trailing off with each word.

“Everything is fake. You said it yourself darling.” He said, mimicking my voice.

“Well, now that you know…” he started when I spotted the engagement box in his pocket.

“You're getting engaged?” I asked.

“You're a really smart pookie.” He said. “But no, I'm engaging the woman of my dreams.”

The rage I felt earlier was replaced with something I couldn't name.

“Sarah? Catherine?” I mentioned all my rivals I could think of.

“You’re looking in the wrong direction,” Mylo said.

“Then who?”

He slipped the engagement box from his pocket and smiled. “Someone you’ve known much longer than I have.”

There was only one person who came to mind, but I refused to believe it.

“Sofie?”

“The enemy is closer than you think.” He said with a wink.
