I woke up to the sound of shattered glass. Immediately thinking someone broke into the house, I hid under my blankets. I glanced at my watch and saw it was one in the morning. I waited for another sound but jumped when I heard someone yell in the living room "You'll never be loyal! You've proven that, Darren!". I grabbed my stuffed animal and squeezed it to my chest. I recognized that voice, it sounded like mommy. "Maybe you're just not willing to except the fact that our marriage is falling apart!" I heard my dad scream. I shook under my blankets, why were mommy and papa yelling so loud? "You'll never meet my needs, Kenna! That's why our marriage is falling apart!" daddy screamed again. My eyes were wide open and my heart was pounding. I've never felt this type of fear before, I felt like I was in danger. "I've tried to meet your needs, but you keep ignoring me and calling me a selfish bitch," mommy yelled. I felt a tug on my blanket and I slowly peeked from under my safe blankets. "G-gloria I'm s-scared," my little sister said with tears rolling down her cheeks. She had her blanket wrapped around her shoulders and her teddy bear in her arms. I sat up in my bed and offered her a seat. "I know, me too," I softly said with the sound of mommy and daddy fighting in the background. She climbed into my lap and softly cried. "Are mommy and papa okay?" she asked me. "I hope so, Alex" I told her. I let a tear roll down my cheek as I heard a chair slam on the floor. "You have no care for OUR children!" mommy screamed. Alex sobbed as our parents argued back and forth. "I'm going to go peek outside...." I said hesitantly. I sat up and let my feet softly hit the floor. Alex tugged on my shirt, "Don't go.." she begged. "I have to know what's going on," I whispered to her. Her crying picked up as I reached the door. My muscles were shaking and my heart was thumping as my hand reached the doorknob. Mommy and daddy always had some issues but never like this. I quietly opened the door and took a deep breath. As I walked down the hall, my parents yelling got louder. I slowly peeked around the corner and saw blood on mommy's face. A chair was smashed on the floor, it's legs were no longer attached. I also saw empty beer bottles broken next to mom. I whimpered as I saw my mom crying. "You're drunk, Darren," my mom whispered to daddy. I gathered my voice and wiped my years away. "M-mommy. P-papa?" I stuttered. My mom's face went pale and she shook her head violently, "Go back to bed" she mouthed to me. "What the fuck are you doing up!" Daddy screamed towards me. I broke down in tears and said "L-leave mommy a-alone." My dad threw another bottle but this time it was aimed at me. I dodged just in time and my mom screamed "You monster! That's OUR CHILD!" Papa ignored her and walked towards me, he grabbed the front of my night gown and pushed me up against the wall. I whimpered in fear as daddy said, "Did I ask for your opinion?" He grabbed a piece of broken glass and cut me with it. I screamed in fear and pain and wished I never left my room. Mommy raced towards me and pushed dad away. I felt a sting on my arm and saw a deep cut. It bled out as I looked around for anything I could wrap my arm with to stop the bleeding. Mom and dad's yells died out as I started to feel dizzy. "S-sissy," Alex whispered from next to me. "Alex! Go inside my room, now!" I urgently said to her. She grabbed my hand and said, "I'm not leaving you here with daddy." She might only be six years old but she's extremely brave. Dad turned his head and saw Alex. He stormed over to her the same way he did with me. Mom was weak and laying on the floor, she couldn't stand up. I screamed and pushed Alex out of Dad's way. He pinned me on the wall once again and he slashed my chest with another piece of glass. I closed my eyes and screamed in pain. Alex ran over to us and tried to pull dad away. She ended up grabbing a broken chair leg and smacking dad on the back of head with it instead.

Dad grunted before passing out, tiny drops of blood trickling out of his head. My arm and chest stung really bad. Alex cried and ran over to mom, who had blood on her face. "Call 911," mom muttered under her breath. Alex nodded and grabbed the nearest phone. I passed out and hoped this was all a bad dream.

I groaned and opened my eyes. My arm and chest hurt immediately and memories of last night came rushing into my brain. I looked around and saw I wasn't at home....I was in a hospital. An IV was stuck in my arm and I was in a white gown. A nice looking teenager walked over to me and said "Hey, honey.....". Tears built up in my eyes as I asked her, "Where am I?"

"You're in the hospital, sweetie. You had a rough night. I'm Katelyn by the way," she softly said. "Where's mom and Alex?" I sobbed. "They're both doing better, your sister is in the room next to us. You're mother had to be taken to the emergency room, multiple pieces of glass got stuck in her chest and needed to be taken out..." I cried and she put a comforting hand on my shoulder and said, "It's going to be okay, you're a brave little eight year old." I nodded and muttered "Thank you" to her. "Are you the nurse?" I asked her. "Oh, no. I'm the daughter of one of the nurse's that work here, she told me to keep an eye on you." I nodded and let the tears flow out of my eyes again. "Where's daddy?" I asked her. She looked hesitant but eventually said, "He got arrested for abuse and assault of a police officer. You're safe now." I smiled at her a drifted back to sleep. I repeated her words in my head, "You're safe now".
