EVELARA
My husband Callum and his first love Lauren were ambushed when they were in Moon Isles, when my husband was supposed to be on the outskirts of the city, having ‘an important meeting.’
The joke was on me that I was assigned as their healer. The respect to serve the Alpha as the senior healer, and currently, I was standing just outside the Alpha’s private ward, each second was like a whiplash on my existence...
“Luna…” My thoughts were discarded by a voice, and I sensed a presence nearby. Even from a distance, I could sense his ragged and nervous breathing.
Kael Dravenhart, Callumm's beta and the guy I used to know as a brother also turned out to be a serpent. He knew everything, yet always lied with a smile that I trusted.
“Beta Kael,” my nails dug painfully into my skin.
His eyes observed me for a moment, before he walked a little closer and bowed slightly. “Luna, I—I was looking for you. Alpha needs to be treated and so does his… Companion…”
Right then, a sharp intake of moaning caught my ears, "Oh Callum, you’re so naughty!" Her sugary tone spread in the air, which only cut more deeply into my soul…
“Whoa—the Alpha is in so much love!” Two passing nurses who had heard the words exclaimed softly.
“Heard, he's been waiting for 5 years for his lover! He had never looked at anyone else! What a faithful man…” Their voices faded in the corridor as I stood there with a torn soul and a grumbling wolf.
I remained motionless though, feeling the presence of my wolf against my skin, thundering to claw out and groaning in an ache that was heavy on our chest—an ache that delivers a clear warning of a faded bond.
Five years of marriage, and I have been taking care of him and all his family without complaint. Arranging all his matters and the entire house, remaining in the shadows at his demand. No ring, no wedding, just bound by fate and concealed by a bonding contract that only a few people were aware of.
Still, I served without a complaint. And—in the end, he's being recognised in public with his first love.
My lips only twitched to a bitter smile.
Soft giggles and muffled moans were still spreading from the heavy doors, stinging my dignity, each worse than the other.
With a deep inhale, I masked my anguish and knocked on the door, causing an abrupt pause in their fun as I pushed the door open without giving anyone any time at all…
“What the hell—” Callumm's voice rang like a distinct bark, even before I could enter. However, as soon as his eyes landed on me, he froze and so did his companion, who was right over his lap.
They were on the comfortable bedding. Callum's left shoulder was wrapped with a bandage, and Lauren was on his lap; her leg was injured. Yet, they were in a very desperate position of making out that only added more to my public insult.
“Eve…” Callumm's tone hardened, his gaze darkened with what I would call annoyance, “What are you doing here?”
There was not even a slightest bit of guilt in those golden eyes, instead irritation flickering, as if I were a villain in his blooming romance.
Ache coiled within me, suffocating me to the point of bleeding, my sight started blurring but I held myself from breaking down. The moment he cheated on me, he lost sight of my pain.
No, I didn't react, neither did I scream, nor did I lash out at him, only—“I'm the assigned healer.” I forced the words out that felt tight against my throat.
I stepped inside, my footsteps sinking into the white marbled floor, seemingly bruising my soul. “And I must warn you, Alpha Brooksbane, you shouldn't go for vigorous exercise in this situation.”
Even though I was burning from within, my tone was flat and severely cold.
Immediately his face darkened, and Lauren jerked. “Oh, Evelara, don’t misunderstand, he was just helping me…” Lauren hurriedly tried to pull away from his lap, yet ended up hurting herself more. “Agh!”
Like a wind, Callumm's hand grabbed her waist hurriedly, pulling her beside him “Hey, watch out! You'll hurt yourself!” His voice was so gentle, a sound I had rarely encountered, as I had not heard from him in the past five years.
His arms were possessively holding her waist.
“No Callum, I-I didn't want her to misunderstand…” She whimpered in his arms; her tone was soft, almost innocent, and if I weren't standing out just now and witnessing it, perhaps it would have melted me as well.
Callum's eyes shot up at me, fury blazing in those golden eyes, "Look what you have done! Are you happy now? Because of you she's in pain.”
I stiffened, his words gnawing at my heart cruelly, my eyes gazing at him in sheer disbelief, which I soon masked with ice.
“In pain?” I raised a brow. “Well, of course she is in pain. As I have told you, you shouldn't be doing too much in this state.” And flashed a hard, void smile.
“N-o, Evelara, you're—” Lauren whimpered again,
“Misunderstanding?” I bit her, ending her sentence as I witnessed her freezing. A cold smile curved against my lips, "Don't worry, miss Veyra, we're healers, we don't bite from behind.”
“What did you just say?” Callum’s voice fell, sharp and hissing, desperately defending his mistress.
“What, did I state anything wrong, Alpha Brooksbane?” Each of my words was filled with venomous sarcasm.
“That’s enough of your nonsense, Eve, you're insulting an innocent without knowing anything!” His tone hit me harshly.
“Innocent, huh?” I chuckled, my heart felt like ripping apart as I watched the shamelessness of the two.
“I didn't know when I accused her, Alpha?” I threw him a challenging look to defy me. He might be the Alpha, but that didn't give him the right to cheat behind my back.
“You—” His eyes fumed, yet, I didn’t bother him, not anymore. I have already realised that—there was no hope for us. Alas, I just came to the conclusion rather belatedly.
Instead, my gaze lingered over my wrist watch and then directed at them, “I'll assign a new healer for you.” I said, cutting him in the middle.
Callumm's gaze shifted, turning sharper and then narrowed at me. “Don’t overthink, Eve. You're only making a fuss.”
“My shift's ending, so you must hurry, Alpha Brooksbane,” I said again, cutting him short.
He paused, his face twisted with shock as it was the first time in five years that I am behaving so differently.
“You—what are you trying to do?” He frowned, looking confused.
A tick sound declared it's seven at night. My lips pressed to a thin smile, "My shift has ended; a new healer will attend to you, Alpha Brooksbane and Miss Veyra.”
Callum looked completely puzzled, which I completely missed and turned around, shutting the door behind me.
Kael was still standing outside the room. As I turned around, he quietly lowered his head.
As the doors were shut, Lauren's muffled voice rang out, “This—this is all my fault, I didn't know she'll be here. I—I shouldn't have…”
“Hey, don't bother.” Callum's tone was as sweet as honey. “She's not worthy of your tears, Ren. She'll just come around in a few hours…”
The corners of my lips twitched bitterly. Indeed, I used to melt the moment he would touch me, and those memories at the moment only disgusted me to the point of nausea.
As I walked out of the hospital, I took out my phone and dialled a number. The call was received after a few rings.
“Hey,” a female tone rang excitedly, “Finally you remember me!”
“Are you free now?” I asked, not biting around the bush.
“Eve?” Her excitement faltered. “Is everything alright?” sounding a little hesitant.
“I've something important to discuss,” I said, my tone was calm, yet sombre.
She paused for a moment before replying, “Yes, I've just returned home.”
“Good, I'm coming…” And I hung up.
My eyes flashed with extreme chill. This time, it wouldn't be the entire story like the past, because I had made up my mind the moment I had learned the truth. There would be no yielding or compromise this time; instead, it would mark the conclusion of everything…
