Chapter

The village of Ashwood had only one rule.

Never enter the Moonveil Forest after sunset.

No one remembered who had made the rule, yet everyone obeyed it. The elders claimed the forest was older than the kingdoms themselves. Hunters spoke of strange whispers carried by the wind, while travelers swore they had seen glowing eyes watching them from between the ancient trees.

To Lyra Ashbourne, they were nothing more than stories.

She had lived beside the forest all her life, and it had never frightened her.

Until today.

The first rays of sunlight spilled across the Crystal River as Lyra stood barefoot on the old wooden bridge, watching the water dance beneath the morning breeze. Her long silver-blonde hair shimmered like moonlight, and her sapphire-blue eyes reflected the peaceful beauty of the village she called home.

Ashwood was small but full of life.

Children chased one another through the streets.

Blacksmiths hammered glowing steel.

Women laughed as they arranged baskets of fresh fruit in the marketplace.

For nineteen years, nothing had disturbed their peaceful existence.

Lyra closed her eyes and breathed in the scent of fresh pine and wildflowers.

"This is my favorite place," she whispered.

"You say that every morning."

She turned to see Ethan Ravenshade leaning lazily against the bridge railing, a playful smile spreading across his handsome face.

"You frightened me."

"I've been calling your name for almost a minute."

"I was thinking."

Ethan chuckled.

"That's dangerous."

Lyra rolled her eyes before snatching the apple he tossed toward her.

"You sound exactly like Morgana."

"She asked me to find you."

"Let me guess..."

"Breakfast."

"You guessed right."

Lyra laughed softly.

Ever since they were children, Ethan had always been there—climbing trees with her, stealing apples from the orchard, and listening whenever she spoke about the strange dreams that haunted her sleep.

Dreams of crimson moons.

Burning kingdoms.

A man with glowing red eyes reaching toward her through fire.

She had never understood them.

Perhaps she never would.

The two friends walked slowly toward the village, enjoying the cool morning air.

"So," Ethan said, "Morgana told me you're helping her gather moon lilies today."

"If she hasn't already gathered them herself."

"You know she probably has."

Lyra smiled.

Morgana never liked waiting.

Although the villagers simply called her the old healer, Lyra knew there was something extraordinary about the woman who had raised her.

Morgana knew herbs no one else recognized.

She spoke forgotten languages in her sleep.

Sometimes...

She stared at the moon with tears in her eyes.

Whenever Lyra asked why, Morgana always answered the same way.

"Some memories are safer left buried."

Lost in thought, Lyra barely noticed the silence creeping around them.

Then she stopped walking.

"Ethan."

"What?"

"Listen."

He frowned.

"I don't hear anything."

"Exactly."

The cheerful songs of birds had disappeared.

The wind no longer rustled the leaves.

Even the Crystal River seemed strangely quiet.

A cold shiver crawled down Lyra's spine.

Before either of them could speak again, a silver fox burst from the forest and raced across the road.

Then came another.

And another.

Within seconds, dozens of frightened animals poured from the woods.

Deer.

Rabbits.

Owls.

Even wolves.

None of them looked back.

They were running from something.

Ethan tightened his grip on the hunting knife at his belt.

"This isn't normal."

"No," Lyra whispered.

"It isn't."

A loud crack echoed deep inside the forest.

Then another.

It sounded as though enormous trees were being ripped from the ground.

The frightened animals vanished into the fields.

Silence returned.

An even heavier silence.

Without saying another word, Lyra and Ethan hurried toward Morgana's cottage at the edge of the village.

As they approached, Lyra slowed.

Morgana stood outside her small wooden home, gripping an ancient oak staff carved with glowing silver runes.

She wasn't tending her herb garden.

She wasn't smiling.

She was staring at the sky.

For the first time in nineteen years...

Fear filled her eyes.

"Mother?"

Morgana turned slowly.

Relief washed across her face the moment she saw Lyra.

"You came back."

Lyra hurried to her side.

"What's happening?"

Instead of answering, Morgana gently touched Lyra's cheek.

Her hand trembled.

"There are things I should have told you long ago."

Lyra frowned.

"What things?"

Morgana opened her mouth to speak.

Before a single word escaped...

The village alarm bell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The sound echoed across Ashwood like a warning from the heavens.

Villagers rushed from their homes in confusion.

A horse thundered through the main street carrying one of the village scouts.

His clothes were torn.

Blood covered his face.

His terrified voice echoed through the village.

"Close the gates!"

"The forest has fallen!"

"They're coming!"

Panic spread instantly.

Mothers grabbed their children.

Men reached for their weapons.

The village chief shouted orders as guards hurried toward the gates.

Lyra looked at Morgana.

"Who is coming?"

The old woman's face turned pale.

"The darkness I prayed would never find you."

A deafening roar shook the earth.

The ground trembled beneath their feet.

Far beyond the village...

The trees of Moonveil Forest bent as though a storm had awakened within them.

Then the impossible happened.

The full moon appeared in the middle of the morning sky.

Before the horrified eyes of the villagers...

Its silver light slowly turned crimson.

The Blood Moon had risen.

Morgana tightened her grip on her staff.

Blue runes blazed across the ancient wood.

Her voice became barely more than a whisper.

"They've found the Moonfire..."

Then hundreds of glowing crimson eyes opened within the darkness of the forest.

And every single one of them...

Was staring directly at Lyra.

The crimson eyes did not blink.

They remained fixed on Lyra as though they had searched centuries just to find her.

A cold shiver ran down her spine.

"W-Who are they?" she whispered.

Morgana stepped in front of her, raising her ancient staff. The glowing blue runes carved into the wood flared to life, casting shimmering light across the frightened villagers.

"They are the Shadowborn."

The name alone seemed to drain the color from her face.

"They should have remained legends."

The earth trembled again.

Then the first scream pierced the air.

A guard standing atop the village gate pointed toward the forest.

"They're here!"

The towering gates exploded inward with a thunderous crash.

Splinters of wood flew through the air as creatures cloaked in living shadows stepped into Ashwood.

Their bodies were massive, covered in black armor that seemed to breathe. Crimson eyes glowed beneath twisted horns, and their claws dragged across the ground, leaving deep scars in the stone.

Children screamed.

Women clutched their families.

The village chief drew his sword.

"Protect the villagers!"

The guards rushed forward.

Steel clashed against claws.

For a heartbeat, hope flickered.

Then one Shadowborn swung its arm.

Three guards were thrown through the air as though they weighed nothing.

The remaining warriors hesitated.

The monsters were far stronger than anything they had ever faced.

Ethan stepped in front of Lyra, drawing the hunting knife from his belt.

"You stay behind me."

Lyra grabbed his arm.

"That knife won't stop them."

"Maybe not."

He smiled despite the fear in his eyes.

"But I'll buy you enough time to run."

"I'm not leaving you."

"You have to."

"I said I'm not leaving!"

Their argument ended as the Shadowborn leader emerged from the smoke.

He was taller than the others.

A black cloak flowed behind him, and an ancient crimson symbol was carved into the armor covering his chest.

His burning eyes settled on Lyra.

At once, every Shadowborn knelt.

"The Moonfire Heir," he said, his voice echoing unnaturally across the battlefield.

"After nineteen years..."

"We have found you."

Lyra's heart pounded.

"What is he talking about?"

The Shadowborn leader smiled.

"You truly know nothing."

Morgana struck her staff against the ground.

A circle of silver-blue light spread across the village square, forcing the creatures back.

"You will not touch her."

The leader laughed.

"You cannot hide destiny forever, Guardian."

"So you remember me."

"I remember the witch who stole our prize."

Lyra stared between them.

"You know him?"

Morgana didn't answer.

Instead, she reached into her robe and removed a silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon.

It was the necklace Lyra had worn since childhood.

Slowly, Morgana slipped it from Lyra's neck.

Instantly, a powerful gust of wind swept through the village.

The pendant glowed brilliantly.

"What... is happening?" Lyra asked.

Morgana looked into her eyes, tears shining in her own.

"This pendant was never meant to protect your body."

"It was created to seal your power."

"My... power?"

"You are not an ordinary girl, Lyra."

"You are the last heir of the Moonfire Bloodline."

The words struck harder than any weapon.

"No..."

"That can't be true."

"It is."

"You were born to unite kingdoms."

"You were born to change the fate of this world."

The Shadowborn leader raised his sword.

"And she will do so..."

"As our queen."

The monsters charged.

Morgana lifted her glowing staff toward the Blood Moon.

Ancient words flowed from her lips.

The sky rumbled.

Silver flames burst from the ground, forming a wall between the villagers and the advancing Shadowborn.

The creatures shrieked as the holy fire burned their dark flesh.

"Run!" Morgana shouted.

"Ethan, take her and go!"

Ethan grabbed Lyra's hand.

"Come on!"

She refused to move.

"I won't leave you!"

"You must!"

"I won't!"

A Shadowborn broke through the wall of silver fire and lunged toward Lyra.

Everything happened in an instant.

Ethan shoved her aside.

The monster's claws tore across his shoulder.

He cried out in pain as blood soaked his shirt.

"Ethan!" Lyra screamed.

Rage unlike anything she had ever felt exploded inside her.

The silver pendant in Morgana's hand shattered.

A blinding light burst from Lyra's body.

The wind howled.

Her silver-blonde hair floated around her like liquid moonlight.

Her sapphire-blue eyes blazed with brilliant silver flames.

The ground cracked beneath her feet.

Every Shadowborn froze.

Even Morgana gasped.

"The Moonfire..."

"It has awakened."

A pillar of silver-blue fire erupted into the heavens.

Far away, in the obsidian halls of the Vampire Kingdom, King Lucien Draven rose abruptly from his throne.

His crimson eyes widened.

"So..."

"The prophecy is true."

In the northern mountains, Alpha King Kael Blackthorn suddenly clutched his chest as his wolf roared inside him.

"Find her."

At the same moment, in the Crystal Citadel of the witches, Seraphina Nightshade watched an ancient prophecy scroll burst into silver flames.

"The Moonfire Heir lives."

Back in Ashwood, the light slowly faded.

Lyra collapsed to her knees, exhausted and confused.

The surviving villagers stared at her in stunned silence.

No one spoke.

No one dared.

Then...

A slow, mocking clap echoed from the burning forest.

Clap.

Clap.

Clap.

A tall figure stepped out of the shadows.

Unlike the Shadowborn, he looked almost human.

His black armor was etched with crimson runes, and his cold smile sent chills through every soul in the village.

He looked directly at Lyra.

"At last," he said softly.

"I've found the future Moonfire Queen."
