Maya Carter had a talent for finding secrets.
It wasn’t the kind of talent people put on a résumé. It had started with curiosity, then turned into obsession. Whenever a story didn’t make sense, Maya couldn’t leave it alone. She searched old records, questioned people who didn’t want to talk, and followed every suspicious detail until she found the truth.
At twenty-two, she was already known in her newsroom for doing what other reporters wouldn’t.
Tonight, however, she was supposed to be finishing an ordinary investigation.
Her laptop showed an unfinished article about a construction company accused of hiding safety violations. Maya had spent weeks collecting documents, but her attention had disappeared hours ago.
She glanced at the clock.
11:48 p.m.
The newsroom was almost empty.
Maya reached for her coffee and took one sip before making a face.
Cold.
“Perfect.”
She pushed the cup aside.
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
She ignored it.
A few seconds later, it vibrated again.
Maya picked it up.
A single message waited on the screen.
I need you to stop a wedding.
She stared at it.
Then laughed softly.
“Seriously?”
Another message appeared.
The wedding is in six days.
Her smile disappeared.
Maya typed:
Who is this?
The reply came almost immediately.
Someone who knows what you’re capable of.
She frowned.
What wedding?
A photograph appeared.
Maya opened it.
Her expression changed.
She knew the man in the photograph.
Adrian Blackwood.
Billionaire. CEO. Heir to the Blackwood family fortune.
His name appeared regularly in business magazines, usually beside words like powerful, ruthless, or untouchable.
The photograph showed him outside a hotel.
Beside him stood a woman Maya didn’t recognize.
Adrian wasn’t smiling.
He was looking at the woman with an expression Maya couldn’t understand.
It wasn’t affection.
It wasn’t anger.
It looked like fear.
Maya zoomed in.
Another message appeared.
Adrian Blackwood is getting married next Saturday.
Maya typed:
And you want me to ruin it?
Yes.
Why?
A pause.
Then:
Because his bride is hiding something.
Maya sat back.
The bride was Evelyn Hart.
Everyone knew Evelyn. She was the daughter of the wealthy Hart family, elegant and intelligent, with the kind of reputation money could protect.
The upcoming wedding had already been called the social event of the year.
Maya looked at Adrian’s photograph again.
Something didn’t feel right.
What has Evelyn done?
Instead of answering, the stranger sent an address.
Black Rose Restaurant. Midnight. Come alone.
Maya looked at the clock.
11:54.
She should have ignored the message.
Instead, she closed her laptop.
⸻
The Black Rose was far more luxurious than any place Maya normally visited.
Crystal lights hung from the ceiling. Soft music filled the room. Every table was covered with white linen and expensive silverware.
Maya found table seventeen.
A woman in a black suit was waiting.
She looked to be in her forties, with perfectly styled hair and a diamond bracelet around her wrist.
Maya sat opposite her.
“You wanted to see me.”
The woman studied her.
“You’re younger than I expected.”
“And you’re more mysterious than I expected.”
The woman smiled faintly.
“I’ve heard about your work.”
“Then you know I don’t accept jobs from strangers.”
The woman pushed an envelope across the table.
“Open it.”
Maya didn’t move.
“What’s inside?”
“Fifty thousand dollars.”
Maya stared at her.
“For what?”
“Your first payment.”
“I haven’t agreed to anything.”
“You came here.”
“Because I wanted answers.”
“You’ll get them.”
Maya slowly opened the envelope.
Cash.
A lot of it.
She closed it immediately.
“I don’t destroy people’s lives for money.”
The woman’s expression remained calm.
“Who said Adrian Blackwood is innocent?”
Maya studied her.
“Then tell me what he did.”
The woman placed three photographs on the table.
Maya picked up the first.
Adrian.
The second showed Evelyn Hart entering a private hospital.
The third made Maya stop.
Richard Blackwood.
Adrian’s father.
He had died four years earlier.
Yet the photograph had been taken only weeks before his death.
Maya looked up.
“What’s the connection?”
“That’s what you’re being paid to discover.”
“You already know something.”
“We know enough to be worried.”
“Worried about what?”
The woman’s voice dropped.
“If Adrian marries Evelyn, someone will die.”
Maya’s expression hardened.
“Is that a threat?”
“No.”
“Then what is it?”
“A warning.”
Maya looked down at the photographs again.
“Who is the woman in the first photograph?”
“Lena Vale.”
“Who is she?”
The woman hesitated.
“We don’t know.”
Maya frowned.
“You don’t know, but you’re paying me fifty thousand dollars to investigate her?”
“We knew her once.”
“What happened?”
“She disappeared.”
Maya’s eyes narrowed.
“When?”
“Two days after that photograph was taken.”
The woman stood.
Maya quickly asked, “Why me?”
The woman looked at her.
“Because you don’t stop digging.”
Then she walked away.
Maya remained at the table.
She looked at the envelope.
Then at the photographs.
Something was wrong.
She could feel it.
And Maya had learned to trust that feeling.
She took the photographs and left the money untouched.
⸻
At two in the morning, Maya sat at her kitchen table surrounded by notes.
She searched for Lena Vale.
Almost nothing came up.
No recent social media accounts.
No current employment records.
No obvious connection to the Blackwood family.
It was as though Lena had disappeared from existence.
Maya searched again.
Then she found an old newspaper article.
BLACKWOOD ENTERPRISES MOURNS FOUNDER.
Richard Blackwood had died suddenly after what the article described as a brief illness.
Adrian had taken over the company shortly afterward.
Maya read the article twice.
Nothing about Lena.
Nothing about Evelyn.
Nothing suspicious.
She opened another database.
Then another.
Hours passed.
Finally, she found something.
A small article from twenty-seven years earlier.
BLACKWOOD FAMILY WELCOMES SECOND SON.
Maya’s eyes widened.
Richard Blackwood and his wife had welcomed a second child.
A boy.
Ethan Blackwood.
She searched for Ethan.
There were only a handful of references.
Then, four years later, another article appeared.
PRIVATE MEMORIAL HELD FOR BLACKWOOD FAMILY MEMBER.
No details.
No photograph.
No explanation.
Maya leaned back.
Why had nobody mentioned Ethan?
She looked at the photograph of Lena again.
Then at the date.
Three weeks before Richard’s death.
Everything seemed connected.
She opened a new document.
At the top, she typed:
BLACKWOOD WEDDING INVESTIGATION
Then four questions.
Who is Lena Vale?
What happened to Ethan Blackwood?
Why was Evelyn meeting Richard?
Who wants this wedding stopped?
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Maya hesitated.
Then answered.
“Hello?”
Silence.
“Who is this?”
A man’s voice finally spoke.
“Stop investigating the wedding.”
Maya froze.
“Who are you?”
“You’ve been warned.”
The call ended.
Maya slowly lowered the phone.
Her heart was beating faster.
She hadn’t told anyone about the assignment.
So how did they know?
She looked at the photographs.
Someone was watching her.
And that made the investigation more dangerous than she had expected.
⸻
The next morning, Maya went to Blackwood Holdings.
The skyscraper towered over the city, its glass walls reflecting the morning sun.
She walked through the entrance with her notebook in hand.
The receptionist smiled.
“Good morning. Do you have an appointment?”
“No.”
“I’m afraid Mr. Blackwood’s schedule is completely—”
“I’m here about his wedding.”
The receptionist stopped.
Maya smiled politely.
“Tell him Maya Carter is here.”
A few seconds later, the receptionist picked up the phone.
Her expression changed.
“Mr. Blackwood will see you.”
Maya hadn’t expected that.
An assistant led her to a private elevator.
The doors opened on the highest floor.
“Mr. Blackwood is waiting.”
Maya stepped inside.
Adrian stood beside the windows.
He was dressed in a dark suit, his expression unreadable.
He turned when she entered.
“Close the door.”
Maya did.
“You’ve been asking questions,” he said.
“That’s my job.”
“Not about me.”
“You’re getting married in six days. People are interested.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You’re not people.”
Maya crossed her arms.
“Then what am I?”
“Someone who was paid to investigate me.”
Her heartbeat skipped.
She forced herself to remain calm.
“That’s an interesting accusation.”
“It’s a fact.”
Adrian walked toward his desk.
“Someone hired you.”
Maya said nothing.
“Did they give you photographs?”
Still nothing.
His eyes hardened.
“Lena Vale.”
Maya’s silence told him everything.
Adrian picked up the photograph from her folder.
His expression changed the moment he saw it.
“Where did you get this?”
“Someone sent it to me.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
Adrian looked at the photograph for several seconds.
Then he opened a drawer and removed another one.
He placed it on the desk.
Maya stared.
It was Lena again.
But this time she was standing beside a younger Adrian.
And in her arms was a baby.
“Who is that?” Maya asked.
“My brother.”
Maya looked at him.
“You have a brother?”
“Had.”
“What happened to him?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“He died.”
“When?”
“Years ago.”
Maya looked at the photograph.
“And Lena?”
“My brother’s mother.”
Maya’s eyes widened.
“Then why was she meeting your father?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why was Evelyn meeting him?”
“I don’t know that either.”
Maya studied Adrian.
“You expect me to believe you know nothing?”
Adrian’s expression became colder.
“Believe whatever you want.”
Maya stepped closer.
“Someone paid me fifty thousand dollars to stop your wedding.”
His eyes didn’t leave hers.
“And someone threatened me last night because I accepted.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“You were threatened?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“After midnight.”
“Did they identify themselves?”
“No.”
“Then you’re in more danger than you realize.”
Maya stared at him.
“Why?”
Adrian moved closer.
“Because whoever sent those photographs has access to private Blackwood records.”
Maya’s stomach tightened.
“And you think they’re connected to your family?”
“I know they are.”
“Then why don’t you stop the wedding yourself?”
“Because if I cancel it, whoever is behind this will know I discovered the truth.”
Maya understood.
The wedding wasn’t simply a wedding.
It was bait.
Adrian was using it to draw someone out.
“You want me to keep investigating.”
It wasn’t a question.
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“I want you to find out who hired you.”
Maya stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because they may be the only person who knows what really happened to my father.”
Silence filled the room.
Maya slowly closed her notebook.
“I’ll investigate.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“No. You don’t.”
He stepped closer.
“If you continue, you may lose more than your job.”
Maya held his gaze.
“I’m not afraid.”
“You should be.”
“Maybe.”
She turned toward the door.
“But now I’m curious.”
“Maya.”
She stopped.
Adrian’s voice softened.
“If you find Lena Vale, don’t contact her.”
Maya turned back.
“Why?”
For the first time, Adrian looked genuinely afraid.
“Because if she’s still alive…”
He paused.
“…she may be the reason my father is dead.”
Maya stared at him.
Then she walked out.
⸻
Outside the building, Maya took a deep breath.
She had gone there looking for a scandal.
Instead, she had found a mystery.
A dead father.
A missing woman.
A supposedly dead brother.
A suspicious bride.
And a billionaire who seemed to know more than he was willing to admit.
Her phone vibrated.
Another unknown message.
You should have stayed away from Adrian Blackwood.
Maya looked around.
Across the street, a black sedan was parked.
Its windows were tinted.
For a moment, she thought she saw someone watching her.
Then the car drove away.
Maya looked down at the message again.
Her fear slowly turned into determination.
Someone wanted her to stop.
Adrian wanted her to investigate.
And whoever had hired her clearly knew something she didn’t.
Maya opened her notebook and wrote one final question beneath the others:
Who is really behind the wedding?
She closed the notebook.
The assignment had begun.
And six days before Adrian Blackwood walked down the aisle, Maya Carter had no idea that the biggest secret she would uncover wouldn’t be about his bride.
It would be about him.
