"Alright, you can get up now. Congratulations, you're pregnant, just about four weeks along."
Eileen Alfred took the ultrasound result handed over by the nurse, thinking that the round-faced young nurse's smile when she laughed was just like an angel.
Having been married to Victor Walter for a year, what she wanted most was to have a child that belonged to them.
Victor was often too busy to be home. It was said that the "seven-year itch" was a thing, but it had only been a year, and Eileen had already felt the growing estrangement between them. Now, with the child, their bond would be closer.
Eileen happily received the document and left the ultrasound room with gratitude.
There were many people coming and going at the hospital door. Eileen lowered her head to read the results, absorbed in her joy. Just when Eileen was about to step down the steps, a soft voice suddenly intruded into her ears.
"Victor, baby kicked again, feel it, he is kicking me."
Eileen looked up in surprise at the person opposite, racking her brains but couldn't understand why Angela Gerald's hand was holding her husband's arm, and holding it so tightly, as if grown onto his body.
One was Eileen's beloved husband, and the other was Eileen's closest friend, when they were together, however, the picture seemed quite annoying.
Upon seeing Eileen on the steps, Victor hesitated, his face turned slightly unnatural:
"Eileen, let me explain, I ..."
Angela gasped out in surprise, one hand covering her belly, the other still tightly clinging to Victor's arm:
"Eileen, I didn't mean to, I'm sorry, I'll leave right away."
As soon as Angela turned to leave, without taking a step, she was held by Victor: "It's okay, Angela, tell her."
Clinging to Angela, Victor looked up at Eileen's astonished and pained eyes:
"Eileen, it's not Angela's fault, she is too remarkable, I couldn't control myself. Now, I think we should get a divorce."
The word "divorce" exploded over Eileen's head, leaving her mind blank.
Just yesterday, Angela was laughing around her, trying to make her the godmother of her child. After a long struggle, it turns out the child is her husband's... Furious, a few seconds later, Eileen swung her hand at Angela, aiming to slap her across the face.
"Eileen, we should part on amicable terms, don't treat Angela this way."
Victor intercepted Eileen's hand, fury flashing in his eyes instantly.
Unbearably teary, Eileen blinked back the tears swirling in her eyes:
"Victor, we've been in love since college, worked together to save money for our wedding after graduation. Now, barely a year after we got married, you want a divorce? Victor, today is not April Fool's day, could you please stop joking with me?"
Struggling, Eileen removed her hand from his and grabbed onto Victor's arm tightly.
Eileen couldn't believe it was true – she was a local woman, completely devoted to her boyfriend before getting married, and saw her husband as her world after getting married. From the day they got hitched, she had prepared herself to grow old together.
But now, it’s been only a year... Just a year.
"Victor, please, say something..."
Eileen pleaded, looking up at him. But the cold indifference in Victor's eyes made Eileen feel as though she were in an icy cellar, her whole body shaking from the chill. Almost losing hope, she suddenly remembered the document in her hand.
"Victor, you can leave me, but how can you abandon your child? Your mother has been urging us to have a child, hasn't she? I'm pregnant, exactly four weeks along. Look..."
With all her hopes pinned on the ultrasound scan, Eileen was even prepared to forgive Victor.
As long as he didn’t divorce her, she could pretend that nothing had happened between him and Angela.
Filled with anticipation, Eileen watched as Victor's eyes suddenly widened in shock, his voice distorted: "What? You’re pregnant? Four weeks?"
At first, Eileen thought he was excited, her tense heart eased a little. She quickly nodded: "Yes, I just found out. Victor... Ah..."
Eileen's eager explanation was interrupted by a sudden slap. Victor stared at her, bloodshot eyes turning him into a beast ready to pounce.
"Eileen, you rotten woman, you've made cuckold of me. For the past month, never mind this month, even if you count back three or four months, have I touched you?"
