Fiona's POV

I was at work when I received a call on my cell phone, it was from a hospital, informing me that my mom had been admitted. I dashed out of the kitchen and went straight to the hospital. When I got to see my mom, she was looking all weak and pale, she could even hardly talk. My eyes became pregnant with tears but I know I have to hold it on so my mom doesn't feel sad.

"It's fine, Fiona. The doctor said I'm okay now" my mom said but I disagreed with her because her condition has worsened due to the fact that she hasn't been hospitalized for proper treatment.

"I'll go see the doctor" I said and went to the doctor's office.

When I got to the doctor's office, he offered me a seat with a worrisome look on his face. I clearly understood what he was about to say.

"How is she now?" I asked

"I'm afraid we really have to admit her now. Her condition has worsened and if she doesn't get a transplant real fast, I'm afraid she doesn't have much time left" he replied, patting my hands as a consolation.

"Like how much time does she have left?" I asked

"About 4 months" he said

"4 months?" I asked, bewildered. "Anything else to buy her more time?" I asked

"Not at all, Fiona" the doctor said and I went back to the ward.

My mom was already sleeping when I got back to the ward. I placed a soft kiss on her forehead gently in order not to wake her up and I went back to work.

Unfortunately for me, when I got back to my place of work, my boss had already arrived and had asked of me.

"He said he wants to see you in his office immediately you return" one of my coworker informed me.

I knew I was in trouble. I dragged my feet to my boss's office and bent my head down when I got to his table.

"You requested to see me, sir" I said but instead of saying anything to me, he just handed me two envelopes.

"What should I do with these, sir?" I asked

"One is your sack letter and the other is your pay for the work done this month. You may now leave my office" he said

I dropped on my knees, begging him not to fire me but he refused saying I left him with no better option.

I went back home on tears, thinking about what to do next. I even almost got knocked down by a car. When I got home, I prepared something for lunch, for myself and my younger brother, Andreas.

Soon, he came back from school, looking so skinny and weak. I can't blame him, he only had 2 burgers for the past 3 days.

I wrapped my hand around his shoulders.

"Guess what I made today" I said

"Vegetables or burger" he replied

"Of course not. I made your favorite meal" I said and he looked at me.

"Rice? Are you for real?" He asked, running to the table.

I could tell he was more than excited with the way he was rushing the meal.

"Can I have some more?" He asked

"Sure. Go serve yourself" I replied.

My phone beeped and I looked at it, it was a message from Ann, my best friend. I had told her about my mom and me being stopped at work and she texted that she would drop in later in the evening.

I was surfing the internet for jobs when Andreas came to remind me about his school fee.

"Oh! I have forgotten I promised the school this week!" I exclaimed. "Can you please stay home throughout next week?" I asked

"Why do I have to stay home?" He asked.

I drew him closer to me and told him about our mother's health and that I had lost my job so there's no way I can afford the school fee now and he agreed to stay back at home.

I surfed for hours but still couldn't find a job with a good pay. I was still on it when Ann came in.

"Hi, girlfriend. Oh! Don't give me that look, something can still be done" she said

"Something like what?" I asked

"This" she said showing me something on her phone, it was a job vacancy and the pay was more than enough to sort my current problem. I pulled her in for a hug.

"What would I have done without you?" I asked

"Now, that's what I like. Seeing you smiling" she said. "Go call Andreas, I bought us some food" she said and I went to call Andreas. We all ate to our satisfaction and slept off.

The next morning, I got up a bit late. Ann wasn't going to Work on weekends, Andreas isn't going to school today because of his fee and I wasn't also going to work because I was fire so I guess all these factors make me felt relaxed.

I got out of bed, Ann was still fast asleep so I tiptoed out of the room in order not to disturb her. I did the house chores together with Andreas and prepared the food stuff Ann brought for us.

I went back to the room to call Ann for breakfast but when I got to the room, I saw her looking so shocked as she stares at her phone.

"What's wrong?" I asked

"Go get dressed right away" She yelled

" what's the matter with you? Where am I going?" I asked

"The interview for the job is today by 8:30am" She said

"What?" I looked at the time, it was 07:56am. "Why didn't you tell me before?" I asked

" I also had no idea, it was edited this morning" She said, finding me something to wear while I was already taking my bath.

By 08:08, we were both ready and we both dashed out of the house. When we got to the address, I couldn't believe my eyes, the house looks like another planet on earth. Ann dragged me in, jolting me out of my thoughts.

When we entered the living room, I saw five other ladies who were also waiting for the interview and I lost all confidence I was going to get the job because they appear more presentable than I do. I looked at my wrist watch and it says 08:32am. The interview ought to have started, I thought.

Just then, a lady walked up to us and told the first lady to follow her. Soon, the interview was over and the lady whose name is Tryphena told us she would get back to us the next morning.

I looked at Ann hopelessly as Tryphena kept admiring and appreciating the second lady she interview
