Sitting in my backyard waiting for my friends to show up is the shittiest boredom I think exists. All I can do is sit here thinking about what I’m supposed to do with my life. I graduate this year and have no idea how I’m going to survive on my own. All my friends already have the universities and safety schools picked out, some even have applied already. I don’t think someone absolutely needs to go to school after high school to have a good life anyway; however society says differently.
‘HEY OSCAR’ Theo Baker, one of my best friends called out. I wasn’t listening
‘OSCAR’ Theo yells again.
‘Maybe he's gone deaf, finally we can make fun of him without him knowing’, my other friend; Dean Hanson said sarcastically enough to almost sound serious.
‘DUDE’ they yelled together as they pushed me out of my chair, but I caught myself right before I almost fell into the pool right beside me.
‘Sorry, I was thinking about… well I don't really know exactly what I was thinking about’
‘Sure I bet you were thinking about Sabrina Mason’ Theo said with a slight laugh.
Sabrina Mason is probably the hottest chick in our school, well she was at least. She went missing last week, and the police have been non stop looking, per the request of her parents, Bill and Rebecca Mason, now they are definitely the richest people in town. However, that wasn’t hard to be, there are only about 300 people who live here. Anyway they keep paying the cops to keep looking all over town but I think she ran away, and if that's true then she is long gone by now, it's not hard to get out of this town as long as you have the money and I bet she had money stashed in places all over that house. If they ever find her it’ll be at least three towns over, she drove a teal mini cooper that her parents got her for her right when she got her licence, and it wasn’t in the driveway the day she went missing. I honestly can’t blame her for running though, her parents put a lot of pressure on her to be perfect and make sure to look like she had everything together, but she couldn’t keep up and when that happened her parents would threaten to ship her off to a boarding school, but never actually did.
The cops haven’t had a break, and you know what they have gone through the whole town at least 4 times. I know this because they’ve been in the back alley behind my house about that many times in the past 3 days, and they haven’t found even a shed of her clothing, the only weird thing is they also haven’t seen any camera footage from the stores or houses that show her driving off somewhere or her at all for that matter, if she really did run away, she was careful and somehow not a single person saw her either.
The next day at school everyone was going crazy over Sabrina, well more than they had been the past week. Everyone was crying more than usual, and I soon found out why. I saw a couple cops talking to some teachers and students, all had either taught Sabrina or were some of her close friends. I walked over and listened from the side about what they were saying.
‘I’m very sorry, we found her just this morning,’ the one cop said.
‘How the fuck could a person do something like that? Like who could be capable of mangling someone so bad and then just leaving them to die?’ asked one girl in between blowing her nose. Holy fuck someone killed her, and from the sounds of it, the person really fucked her up.
‘We are scanning the scene for as much evidence as we can find but that’s all I can tell you for now," the cop said, pulling me back out of my thoughts. Realising I was no longer by myself, I found Dean standing next to me, looking more exhausted than usual.
‘Can you believe it?’ he asked.
‘No, do you know where they found her?’ I was confused because if they found her in town or just outside of town, how did it take them 4 maybe 5 tries to do so?
‘Yeah, they found her in the old house about 2 miles out of town, her parents weren’t happy about them not finding anything in town so they paid them way more to go out further.’ Dean was saying this as Theo walked up.
‘This whole thing is fucked up’ He said as he reached us.
‘Completely’ I said but as I went to say more, the bell rang and people cleared out of the halls fast. My first period was science but I was barely paying attention, I mean why keep classes going when someone who went to the school just got found dead. I mean what do they really think we’re going to learn, mostly everyone is crying, or not here to begin with. My desk mate is Sabrina’s best friend, Eveline Webb. There were tears running down her face, as she looks over at me she notices my looking over at her.
‘Is there something you need, or are you just being a weirdo and staring at the dead girl’s best friend?’ she said, sounding upset.
‘No, I’m just lost in my thoughts, didn’t mean to stare’
‘Oh, well okay then, by the way have you paid attention to anything mr.Doc has said this whole time?’
‘No I haven’t, sorry’ I tried to say but it was obvious that she wasn’t listening anymore. I turned my attention over to the board to see that our teacher decided to give us a test for tomorrow morning. It feels like mr.Doc doesn’t even give a fuck about one of his students being dead. But now I have to worry about studying and about a killer being loose in our town. I think the only people in this school that actually look upset about the death are Eveline and the girl in the hallway with the cops. Everyone doesn’t seem too bothered by her death or the fact that a crazy person is running around somewhere probably planning his next murder or just picking someone random which to me is scarier than a targeted attack on someone. Either way whoever did it is completely fucked up in the head.
‘Attention students, classes are cancelled for the rest of the day. Also can we have Eveline Webb to the office please’ The announcement rang through the halls and rooms. Everyone quickly packed up and flowed into the hallways. Eveline pushed past people walking into the office and as curiosity would get to me, I followed her trying to figure out what they wanted, I figured it was about Sabrina, I mean why else would they need her best friend to go to the office. As I reached the office I saw two cops and Eveline walking out talking about when she last saw Sabrina. I heard her mention seeing her the day before she disappeared. As they said their goodbyes I watched the cops go back into the office and heard the start of their conversation with mr.Cross, our principal. They were saying something about how whoever did it there were at least 2 people who killed her, and that they had sexual relations with her after the killed her, but they then doused her body with ammonia so there dna is unusable.
Walking home it felt like I was being followed the entire time, I kept looking around but there wasn’t anyone around that seemed like I had to worry about, just other people who I go to school with and that I see walking this same route everyday. Something was off, usually I’m the only one around when I get to my street, but today there was someone walking the same way right across the street, I turned into my backyard and my dad was cutting the grass, stopping the mower when he saw me walking up.
‘Hey bud, why are you home so early?’ he asked.
‘They cancelled the rest of classes today because of what happened to Sabrina.’
‘Oh well at least they have the courtesy to do that. Do you have to go in tomorrow?’
‘Yeah, as far as I know, I now have a test tomorrow too in science, so I gotta go study.’
‘Okay, well have fun with that, I’m going to finish that yard and mom is inside making brownies!’ Dad yelled after me. I gave him a thumbs up to let him know I heard him. I walked in and saw the same person who was across the street from me earlier still outside but now on the same side as my house. As my mom peaks her head into the room a car pulls up and the person gets in and they speed away. Mom looks over at the window from the sound of the engine.
‘Wow teenagers really don’t care about getting hurt, they could get really hurt speeding like that’ she said kind of to me, kind of to herself.
I left the room and went upstairs. As I sit in my room just about to open my textbook and notes, my phone starts ringing non stop, I pick up my phone and see that Theo is calling me, I pick up and all I hear is him yelling at me for not coming to his house when school got out, not angrily just in a sarcastic angry.
‘Dude come on, we gonna hang out, not everyday classes are cancelled’
‘I can’t I gotta study for a test tomorrow and my mom is making brownies, no way I’m missing out on those’
‘Dude Lillian is making brownies, can we come there then, I love her brownies’
‘Sure I guess, I don’t think there done yet though’
‘That’s okay, we’ll be there in 5’. Theo hung up, so I went downstairs to warn my parents jokingly saying that Theo and Dean are on their way over. Mom laughed and grabbed two more plates from the cupboard for them. I didn’t even hear the door open but suddenly both of them were beside me.
‘Hey Lillian, sup Harry’ Dean said, eyeing the oven waiting for the brownies.
‘Hello Dean, Hi Theo’ mom said while grabbing her oven mitts. She pulled the brownies out and flipped them onto a cooling rack. We all sit and start talking about little things, no one even mentioned Sabrina.
Another two weeks went by quick and going into school was strange. Everyone was talking about something new. Everyone sounded worried.Suddenly two cops walked out of the office with mr.Cross in cuffs. Everyone stopped talking and couldn’t stop staring. I walked up to a group of people who were still chattering quietly.
‘What the fuck just happened?’ I asked.
‘Haven’t you seen the news?’ Brooke Bax, said looking at me like I’m an idiot. ‘They have evidence that mr.Cross was the one that killed and raped Sabrina’, she added. Holy fuck, I couldn’t think of a response, all I could do was look at her like I just watched her stab someone.
‘I thought 2 people did it?’ Asked Harper Mack.
‘Now they think it was only him, but that really doesn’t make sense, but I don’t know, they are doing what they think is right.’ Brooke answered. I walked away now no longer interested in what they had to say. But really what are the cops even thinking? I don’t think they actually know what they are doing. It’s shocking that mr.Cross did it, well maybe did it, and even if he did do it, I don’t think he could’ve acted alone from what I heard they left Sabrina in such a fucked up state no one person could have done it. Everyone followed the cops and mr.Cross to the doors. Standing there I saw the same person I saw two weeks ago outside my house, and the same car picked the person up and once again they sped off. Even with all the cops at the school this car didn’t get pulled over and they were going at least 20 over the speed limit. Suddenly an announcements blared over the speakers
‘CAN EVERYONE MAKE THEIR WAY TO THE CLOSEST CLASSROOM TO THEM! IMMEDIATELY!’ Everyone was freaking out and running everywhere, pushing people onto the floor to get to rooms, not even sure why they told us to get into rooms, however the only door close enough to me to go through was a side exit, so I walked out of the school, and I wasn’t the only person to do this, there was at least 15 others out here with me and more were flooding out. I pulled out my phone and tried to call Dean, no answer. I tried Theo too.
‘Hey dude’, Theo answered in a whispered voice.
‘Why are you whispering?’
‘Cuz I don’t know why they had us hide and I don’t wanna take any risks. Why aren’t you whispering?’
‘I left, an exit door was the closest door for me, a bunch of others also just ran outside’
‘What, okay I’m gonna try and get outside, wait for me, also have you heard anything from Dean yet?’
‘Yeah, I’ll wait here for you, and no I haven’t, I tried his cell before I called you’
‘Okay try him again, I’m coming’ Theo said right before he hung up the phone. I tried to call Dean again, still no answer. I messaged him, saying ‘Dude where are you, if you see this come outside through the side door, Theo and I will be waiting for you’ I see the read receipt turn from delivered to read, good he saw it, I looked up to see Theo running out of the building, he almost crashed into me as he stopped. We waited there for about 15 minutes before seeing Dean run out the door.
‘Why didn’t you pick up my calls?’
‘I got scared, also there was a teacher in the room, she would have told me to hang up anyway.’
‘Fair enough, we’re glad you got out’
‘Come on let's go to my house’ Theo called over to us, he was already a good distance away.
