Matt Damon was an orphan. He had been sent to the orphanage since he was three. He went to elementary school but couldn't go further since the orphanage couldn't afford to send him to College. The orphanage only sent a few brilliant ones to college but Matt was a blockhead; he failed almost all his exams while in elementary school so it was understandable if the orphanage didn't even spare him a glance.
He had been sent out to fend for himself since he was fourteen years old. With no place to stay, he walked from one end of the city to another doing odd jobs and sleeping in abandoned houses. A year later, he managed to rent a room in an abandoned laboratory. And he began working as an helper in an unregistered laboratory with two scientists. His work majored around cleaning the laboratory, running errands and taking care of the test subjects; mice and rabbits, in exchange for a place to live, two meals per day and one dollar per month.
This day was not in anyway different from other days. Matt woke up at the sound of the alarm, rubbed his eyes and stood up. He was quite short for a sixteen year old teenager. He was so skinny his bones could be counted. He went to the back of the building with a pail of water to bath.
He took his bath and went back in to do his morning duties.
9:00am.
Felix, the owner of the laboratory sat in front of a metal tube, he was looking at it with a satisfied gaze, he had been working on it for three years. Matt stood behind him, he was looking at the tube with gleaming eyes.
The function of this tube was to enhance a person's brain capacity. Though, it had never been tested, it was still awesome.
"What we need now are volunteers, but considering the danger, there'd be only a few volunteers"Felix muttered.
Then he turned to Matt and asked "What is a noun?"
"Sir?" Matt was flustered, he didn't expect his boss to ask him such a question.
"I said, What is a noun?"
"A noun..." Matt scratched his head, he remembered hearing that word in elementary school but he couldn't even spell a word. "... I don't remember..."
Felix looked at him with a smile.
"I didn't expect you to know it. Your problem is your low IQ, that is, your brain can't handle too much information"Felix said.
Matt knew Felix was right, no matter how much he tried, his brain never seemed to be able to gain new knowledge.
"But I have a way to help you" Felix walked to him and held him by the shoulder "This baby here can unlock your brain's potential to the fullest"he pointed to the metal tube.
" I thought you said there were lot of dangers in using the machine"
"Yeah, If the experiment on successful, there should be no side effects but if it should fail...."Felix paused then said softly " Your brain may explode causing death and the least likely one is mental disorder"
" What are the chances of success?"
" 85% chance of failure and 15% chance of success"Felix said and then hurriedly said " but I will pay 5000 dollars and you can choose any time that suits you but it must be within a month after signing the contract"
When Matt heard 5000 dollars, his eyes lit up. Even if he was going to die, his life didn't have much meaning anyway. And he could spend and enjoy for a whole month.
And if it was successful, his brain potential would be limitless. This was surely a favorable deal.
" I'm in" Matt said with much fervor.
Felix was surprised at Matt's quick answer but thinking about it, Matt had low thinking capacity and loved to deal with what comes when it comes, he nodded his head and smiled. He then patted Matt's shoulder and walked out of the room.
"Follow me" he called out.
Matt walked briskly to his side and followed him to the front of a door. "Authorised personnel only" was written boldly at the top of the door.
