Sophia’s POV

The world stopped the exact second Sophia Bennett heard her daughter call another man “Daddy.”

It wasn’t supposed to mean anything. It was just a gala, just another night where she had to smile politely, hold her head high, and make sure Lily didn’t feel out of place among people who lived in worlds she could never truly belong to. The grand hall sparkled with golden lights and crystal chandeliers, laughter floating through the air like expensive perfume, while Sophia stood quietly near the edge of it all, one hand gently resting on Lily’s shoulder as her daughter looked around with wide, curious eyes.

“Don’t wander too far, okay?” Sophia whispered softly, bending slightly to adjust the small bow in Lily’s hair.

Lily nodded eagerly, already distracted by everything shiny and bright. “Mama, this place looks like a castle.”

Sophia forced a small smile. “It kind of is.”

That was when it happened.

A waiter passed too closely. A glass tilted. A splash of bright juice flew through the air, and landed directly on a man’s perfectly tailored suit.

The entire section of the room seemed to freeze.

“Oh no!” Lily gasped.

Sophia’s heart dropped. “Lily—”

But before she could even finish, the man slowly turned.

Tall. Impossibly composed. Dark hair styled perfectly, sharp jawline, expensive watch glinting under the chandelier light. Everything about him screamed power, control, and wealth that didn’t need to be announced.

Except for his eyes.

Because the moment those eyes landed on Lily, something in them shifted.

Confusion first.

Then recognition.

Then something far deeper, something almost painful.

“It’s okay,” the man said gently, crouching down to Lily’s height instead of reacting with anger like everyone else in the room would have expected. His voice was calm, but his gaze never left the child. “Are you alright?”

Lily blinked at him, completely unafraid. “I’m sorry, sir. I didn’t mean to.”

He gave a small smile. “I think I’m the one who should be asking that.”

For a second, something strange passed between them. Something invisible but heavy.

Then Lily tilted her head.

And asked the question that would destroy everything.

“Mama,” she called out without looking away from him, “why does this man look like me?” Sophia froze.

Her breath caught so hard it hurt.

The man slowly looked up.

Their eyes met.

And the past came back like a violent wave.

“Miss Bennett…” Ethan Cole said her name like a memory he had been starving for.

The world around them blurred.

The music, the laughter, the flashing lights, all of it faded into nothing.

Sophia’s grip on Lily tightened instantly.

“We need to go.”

But Lily wasn’t moving. She was still staring at Ethan like she already knew something no one had told her.

Ethan’s gaze dropped to the child again. Slower this time. More careful.

The shape of her face.

The eyes.

The dimples when she frowned in confusion.

His expression cracked just slightly.

“Wait,” he said quietly, standing up now. “Sophia… is she—”

“No,” Sophia cut in sharply, too fast, too defensive.

That answer alone told him everything.

For a brief moment, Ethan didn’t speak. He just looked at Sophia, like he was trying to solve a puzzle that suddenly made too much sense.

And then Lily tugged at Sophia’s dress again.

“Mama,” she whispered, still staring at him, “why does he feel like family?”

That was it.

Something in Ethan’s face changed completely. Not with anger or confusion, realization. And then Sophia did the only thing she could think of.

She turned and left.

Fast.

Too fast.

Lily barely had time to wave goodbye before Sophia pulled her away through the crowd, disappearing into the sea of people like she was escaping something she should have never seen again.

But Ethan didn’t move.

He just stood there.

Staring.

At the space where they had been.

At the child who looked exactly like him.

At the woman who had just walked away like she hadn’t shattered his world for a second time.

Behind him, a business partner tried to speak.

“Mr. Cole, your suit—”

Ethan raised a hand. Silence.

His eyes were still locked on the exit.

Because something inside him had just woken up after five years of being buried.

And it was screaming the same thing over and over again.

That child is mine.

Later that night, Sophia sat in the back of a taxi with Lily asleep against her shoulder, staring out of the window like she could still feel his eyes on her skin.

Her chest wouldn’t stop tightening.

She should have never gone to that gala.

She should have known.

Because Ethan Cole didn’t just disappear from your life.

He came back like a storm.

And storms didn’t ask permission.

They destroyed everything in their path.

On the other side of the city, Ethan stood alone in his penthouse office, still wearing the same ruined suit.

But he wasn’t looking at it.

He was looking at a photo.

A security capture pulled from the gala cameras.

Sophia.

And the child.

His fingers tightened around the edge of his desk.

Five years.

Five years of silence.

Five years of unanswered questions.

And now— Now there was a little girl who looked at him like she already knew him.

Ethan’s jaw clenched.

“Find out everything about her,” he said coldly into the phone.

A pause.

Then—

“And the child.”

The line went quiet.

But Ethan didn’t.

Because for the first time in five years, he wasn’t confused anymore.

He was certain.

And somewhere deep inside him, something terrifyingly powerful had just begun.

Hope.
