Elena Marlowe knew her husband was going to leave her before he said a single word.
She saw it in the way Damian looked at the woman standing beside him.
There was warmth in his eyes.
Real warmth.
It was the kind Elena had spent three years trying to find.
She stood at the edge of the crowded ballroom, one hand resting lightly against the table behind her. Around her, crystal glasses clinked and expensive laughter filled the air, but none of it reached her.
The Cross family had spared no expense tonight.
Golden chandeliers floated beneath the ceiling, held there by magic. Tiny lights moved through the air like stars, casting a soft glow over hundreds of guests. Powerful families from every corner of the kingdom had gathered for the annual Cross Foundation Gala.
And Elena was standing there alone.
Again.
She looked across the room.
Damian was impossible to miss.
He stood near the center of the ballroom in a black suit, his shoulders broad beneath the perfectly fitted jacket. Several businessmen were speaking to him, but his attention wasn't on them.
It was on her.
No.
Not her.
The woman beside him.
Elena's stomach tightened.
She knew that woman.
Everyone did.
Celeste Vale.
Beautiful. Elegant. Mysterious.
And, according to the rumors Elena had spent years pretending not to hear, Damian's first love.
The woman who had disappeared three years ago.
The woman who had returned tonight.
"You're staring."
Elena blinked and turned.
Mira stood beside her, watching her carefully.
"I'm not."
"You are."
Elena forced a small smile. "I'm just tired."
Mira glanced toward Damian.
"Then you should go home."
Elena looked down at her untouched glass.
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because I'm his wife."
The words sounded strange coming from her mouth.
Wife.
After three years, Elena still wasn't sure what the word meant to Damian.
She had married him because she loved him.
She had believed that eventually he would love her too.
Instead, she had become the woman who waited.
Waited for him to come home.
Waited for him to notice when she changed her hair.
Waited for him to remember their anniversary.
Waited for a tenderness that never came.
Across the room, Celeste laughed.
Damian smiled.
Elena's heart sank.
She had never seen that smile directed at her.
"Elena."
Mira's voice softened.
"Don't do this to yourself."
"I'm fine."
"You don't look fine."
"I'm his wife," Elena repeated, almost as if she needed to remind herself. "I should be able to stand beside my husband at his own family's gala."
Mira didn't answer.
Because they both knew the truth.
Damian had never asked her to stand beside him.
He had simply allowed her to exist beside him.
There was a difference.
Elena took a slow breath and lifted her chin.
She wouldn't cry.
Not here.
Not in front of them.
Then Damian began walking toward her.
Her heart jumped.
For one foolish second, she thought he was finally coming to her.
He wasn't.
He stopped in front of her with an unreadable expression.
"Why are you still here?"
Elena stared at him.
"I'm your wife."
His jaw tightened.
"I know."
"Then why are you asking?"
Damian glanced around the room.
"Don't start anything tonight."
A bitter laugh escaped her.
"Start what?"
"Whatever you're thinking."
Elena looked at him for a long moment.
"Are you worried I'll embarrass you?"
His silence answered her.
Something inside her went strangely quiet.
She nodded.
"Don't worry. I won't."
She turned to leave.
Damian caught her wrist.
"Where are you going?"
"Home."
"We're leaving together."
Elena looked down at his hand around her wrist.
Then she looked at him.
"Do you want me there?"
Damian didn't answer immediately.
That hesitation hurt more than a no.
Before he could speak, the music stopped.
Every conversation in the ballroom died.
Elena felt it before anyone else.
A strange pressure filled the room.
Her breathing became difficult.
She looked at her wrist.
A faint golden light was appearing beneath her skin.
"What..."
Damian suddenly released her.
His face had changed.
The coldness was gone.
So was his arrogance.
He looked terrified.
"Elena," he whispered.
She stared at him.
"What is it?"
He didn't answer.
The golden mark spread across her wrist, forming a strange symbol she had never seen before.
Then every magical candle in the ballroom went out.
Someone screamed.
The doors slammed shut.
And from somewhere deep inside Elena's mind, a woman's voice whispered:
"The lost bloodline has awakened."
Elena froze.
Damian stepped toward her.
For the first time since their marriage, he looked at her as though she was the most dangerous person in the room.
And Elena realized that whatever had just awakened inside her...
Her entire life had been a lie.
