The mud was cold against my knees.
I had been kneeling in the courtyard for hours, scrubbing the stone floor with a worn brush while the rest of the Shadow Pack walked past me without a second glance. Some laughed. Some kicked dirt in my face. Most simply ignored me, as if I were nothing more than a piece of furniture.
I was used to it.
I had been a slave in this pack my entire life. An Omega. The lowest of the low. No family. No future. No hope.
My name was Kira Nightshade, and I had learned long ago that the world would never be kind to me.
"Move faster, mutt!"
A boot slammed into my ribs. I gasped, crumpling to the ground as pain exploded through my body. Alpha Kael towered over me, his cruel eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
"You think you can rest?" he snarled. "You think you deserve a break?"
"No, Alpha," I whispered, forcing myself back to my knees. "Forgive me."
He kicked me again. I bit back a scream, my vision blurring with tears.
"Pathetic," he spat. "I don't know why I even keep you alive. You're worthless."
I said nothing. I had learned long ago that arguing only made things worse.
Kael walked away, laughing with his warriors. I stayed on my knees, brushing the mud from my torn dress, fighting the urge to cry.
*Don't cry. Crying won't help. It never helps.*
I had been told this my entire life. My mother was dead. My father was unknown. I had no one.
The only thing I had was survival.
---
The sun was setting when I finally finished my work.
My hands were raw and bleeding. My back ached from hours of scrubbing. But I had survived another day.
I stumbled toward the slave quarters, a cold, damp building where the Omegas slept like animals. But before I could reach it, the pack's war horn sounded.
A deep, echoing blast that made the ground tremble.
Everyone froze.
The Alpha King was coming.
I had heard stories about the Alpha King. He was the most powerful wolf alive—cold, ruthless, and feared by all. He ruled every pack with an iron fist. No one dared to defy him.
But I had never seen him.
The pack gathered in the main courtyard, forming neat rows. Alphas, Betas, warriors—all bowing their heads in respect. I stayed at the back, hidden among the other Omegas.
The gates opened.
A procession of warriors entered, their black armor gleaming in the fading light. And at the center of them all, riding a massive black wolf, was the Alpha King.
Damon Blackwood.
He was even more terrifying than I had imagined. Tall, broad-shouldered, with jet-black hair and golden eyes that seemed to see right through you. His face was cold, unreadable, carved from stone.
He dismounted from his wolf and strode forward. Everyone bowed lower.
Everyone except me.
I didn't bow. I couldn't. My body refused to move.
Because the moment his golden eyes met mine, something inside me shifted.
A pulse. A pull. A strange, magnetic force that tugged at my chest.
*What... what is happening?*
The Alpha King froze.
His eyes locked onto mine. His jaw tightened. His pupils dilated.
And then, to the shock of everyone present, he walked toward me.
Not toward the Alphas. Not toward the warriors.
Toward me.
"Move," someone hissed, shoving me from behind. "You're in his way!"
I stumbled forward, falling to my knees at his feet. I expected him to step over me, to ignore me like everyone else did.
Instead, he stopped.
And he fell to his knees before me.
Gasps rippled through the crowd. The Alpha King—the most powerful wolf in the world—was kneeling before a lowly Omega.
He reached out and cupped my face with trembling hands, his golden eyes burning with an emotion I couldn't name.
"Elara," he whispered. "I found you."
I blinked, confused. "My name is Kira."
"No," he said, his voice cracking with emotion. "Your name is Elara Moonblood. You are the lost heiress of the Moonblood bloodline. The prophesied True Luna. And you are my fated mate."
I stared at him, my mind reeling.
*True Luna? Fated mate?*
"I don't understand," I whispered. "I'm just a slave. I'm nobody."
He laughed—a soft, broken sound. "You are not nobody. You are everything. You are my queen."
Behind me, Alpha Kael's voice rang out, sharp with panic. "Alpha King, please. She is just an Omega. She—"
"Silence," Damon growled, his voice like thunder. "If you ever speak to her again, I will tear out your tongue."
Kael fell silent.
Damon turned back to me, his expression softening. "I'm going to take you away from this place," he said gently. "You will never be a slave again. You will be a queen."
I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came.
For the first time in my life, someone had looked at me like I mattered.
And I didn't know how to feel.
---
Damon helped me to my feet.
His touch was gentle—so different from the cruel hands I was used to. I flinched, expecting pain, but he simply held my hand and guided me forward.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked, my voice barely audible.
"Somewhere safe," he said. "Somewhere you belong."
I looked back at the Shadow Pack. They were all staring at me—some in shock, some in fear, some in hatred. Alpha Kael's face was pale, his fists clenched at his sides.
He knew. He knew who I really was. And he was terrified.
Damon led me out of the courtyard, through the gates, and into a waiting carriage drawn by massive wolves. He helped me inside, sitting across from me, his golden eyes never leaving my face.
"I've been searching for you for years," he said quietly. "The moment you were born, I felt you. But the Shadow Cult—the same dark force that murdered your family—hid you from me. They made you a slave so you would never discover your power."
"But why?" I asked, my voice trembling. "Why would they do that?"
"Because you are the True Luna," Damon said. "The prophesied wolf destined to unite all packs and destroy the Shadow Cult. If they had killed you, another True Luna would have been born. But if they kept you weak and broken, you could never rise against them."
I felt tears streaming down my face. "I'm not strong. I'm not powerful. I'm just a slave."
Damon reached out and gently wiped my tears. "You are stronger than you know," he said softly. "You survived years of abuse. You never gave up. That is the mark of a true warrior."
I looked at him, searching for the lie. But all I saw was sincerity.
"Why do you care so much?" I whispered.
He smiled—a warm, tender smile that made my heart flutter. "Because you are my fated mate," he said. "And I have been waiting my entire life to find you."
---
The carriage stopped in front of a massive castle.
It was breathtaking—towers of gleaming white stone, stained glass windows that glowed with silver light, and guards who bowed as we passed.
"This is the Royal Keep," Damon said. "My home. And now, yours."
I stepped out of the carriage, my legs trembling. Servants rushed forward, bowing low. A young wolf with red hair approached, her eyes wide with curiosity.
"Alpha King," she said, bowing. "Is this...?"
"This is Elara Moonblood," Damon said. "The True Luna. Treat her with the same respect you would show me."
The red-haired wolf's eyes widened. She bowed to me. "Welcome, my Queen. I am Lily. I'll be your personal attendant."
I blinked, overwhelmed. "I don't need an attendant. I'm used to doing things myself."
Damon placed a hand on my shoulder. "You're not a slave anymore, Elara. You're a queen. Let people serve you. You deserve it."
I nodded slowly, still struggling to believe any of this was real.
Lily led me to a suite of rooms—more luxurious than anything I had ever imagined. A massive bed draped in silk. A private bath. A closet filled with beautiful gowns.
"This is all for me?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
"For you, my Queen," Lily said with a warm smile. "If you need anything, just call."
She left me alone.
I stood in the middle of the room, staring at my reflection in a tall mirror. The girl who stared back was thin, scarred, and broken. Her clothes were torn and dirty. Her eyes were hollow.
But there was something else there too. A spark. A fire that had never been extinguished.
*I am not a slave,* I told myself. *I am the True Luna. And I will not let anyone hurt me again.*
---
A knock at the door interrupted my thoughts.
"Come in," I called.
Damon entered, carrying a tray of food. "I thought you might be hungry," he said, setting the tray on a table.
I looked at the food—roasted meat, fresh bread, ripe fruit. My stomach growled. I hadn't eaten a proper meal in days.
I hesitated, then sat down and began to eat. Damon watched me with a soft smile.
"Slow down," he said gently. "It's not going anywhere."
"I'm not used to having food," I admitted. "Alpha Kael only let us eat scraps."
Damon's expression darkened. "That pack will pay for what they did to you," he said. "I promise."
I looked up at him. "Why did you kneel before me? In front of everyone?"
He met my gaze, his golden eyes warm. "Because you are my queen," he said simply. "And a king kneels to no one. Except his mate."
I felt heat rise to my cheeks. "I don't know how to be a queen. I don't know anything about power or politics or—"
"You'll learn," Damon said. "I'll teach you. And Marcus—my most trusted Lycan—will train you in combat and magic. By the time the Shadow Cult comes for you, you'll be ready."
"What if I'm not?" I whispered. "What if I fail?"
Damon reached out and took my hand. "Then I will stand beside you," he said. "Until my last breath."
