Angel! Angel!” My best friend called my name. “Wake up, go and take your bath, it’s time.”
I woke up looking so devastated. I looked at the time — it was 5:33 a.m. I wished the day had never broken, but nevertheless, I rushed, carried my bucket of water, and headed down to the bathroom so Senior Clara, our house captain, wouldn’t catch me on my bed and give me the flogging of the day.
Being a boarder since I was 11 has not been easy, but it was my decision and not my parents’ decision, so I had to accept everything that came with it. Being their only child, it wasn’t easy for them to send me to boarding school, but after much pleading from me, they had to agree.
I came back from the bathroom, wore my clothes quickly, and headed straight to my morning duty portion to avoid the wrath of Senior Alice, my work supervisor. When I reached the portion, I took the broom and started sweeping.
As I was sweeping, my best friend called my name again. “Angel, I have been looking for you! Be fast with the sweeping so we can go to class together,” she said.
I swept faster, packed and disposed of the dirt, hanged my bag on my back, and made my way out of the hostel with my friend. As we were walking, she asked, “Angel, which post would you like to hold in this school?”
I smiled. “House Captain. Being a house captain has always been my dream since I entered the school, and I have worked earnestly to see if I get the post.”
She laughed. “Won’t you like to be Head Girl? You are one of the brightest students, and I think being Head Girl of this great college will suit you best,” she said, looking at me to know my response.
I smirked. “No, I want to be House Captain, not Head Girl.”
She shouted, “Why?” anxiously.
As we entered the class, it was quiet, with just a few students in it. I went straight to my chair and sat down. A few minutes later, Grace ran toward me and I wondered what was the reason for the swift walk until she whispered into my ear we still have unfinished business. She said quietly I heaved a deep sigh of relief and said okay gravy go back to your seat.
Being the silent nerd in class, the wall person who only moved just when displaced by someone not because she wanted to had seen me missing a lot of fun other teenagers had.
That had been me until I met Grace. She was my extrovert and in most cases she had to defend me or stand up to bullies for me.
Sometimes I admired her confidence but no matter how hard I tried to be like her I ended up being uncomfortable almost like someone had scraped off my skin.
I had eventually stopped trying and let her be the outgoing person for the both of us.
Then he walked in,
He didn’t even do anything dramatic. He simply walked into the classroom the way every other student did, quietly and without making a scene. But somehow, the moment he stepped inside, his presence was noticed.
He had that kind of effortless handsomeness that didn’t beg for attention, yet attention followed him everywhere he went. It was the kind that people noticed without even trying.
His sharp jawline gave his face a defined look, while his soft eyes carried a calmness that was difficult to ignore. There was something steady about the way he looked at people, like someone who was always in control of himself.
His sleeves were pushed up just enough to reveal part of his forearms, and he carried himself with a quiet confidence that made it seem like he naturally belonged wherever he stood.
He didn’t look around nervously the way new students usually did.
Instead, he walked in calmly, as though he had been part of this school for years.
When he walked in, my heart didn’t just skip.
It sank.
It dropped so suddenly inside my chest that for a moment I felt like the ground beneath me had shifted.
And then he smiled.
Not even at me.
But somehow that made it worse.
My stomach twisted uncomfortably, and my chest tightened in a way I couldn’t explain. Suddenly, I forgot how to sit normally, how to breathe normally, how to exist normally.
I quickly lowered my gaze and stared down at my desk, pretending to focus on the lines of my notebook while secretly trying to gather my thoughts again.
But it’s really unfair how one person can walk into a room and make your heart feel like it’s falling and flying at the same time.
The strange thing was, he probably didn’t even know I existed.
Yet somehow, just his presence had already managed to turn my calm morning into complete chaos.
I kept my head down, hoping no one would notice how suddenly quiet I had become.
But deep inside, one thought kept repeating itself over and over again.
Who exactly was he?
