Evelyn’s POV
I took a deep breath, holding the hospital report in my hands.
"Congratulations, Luna Evelyn. You're pregnant," the pack doctor said softly. "But as an Omega, you need to rest more and keep your emotions steady."
I held back tears and forced a weak smile. This should have been happy news, but I only felt worried.
I was an Omega without a wolf. I should never have been Luna of the Bloodbane Pack. But after my parents died, I married Alpha Calvin to keep the peace between our packs. My Norse Pack joined with Bloodbane, making the pack stronger.
Even after giving birth to twins, I had no real place here. Diana, my mother-in-law, let me see the pups, but never let me raise them. I was not allowed to join their training, teach them pack ways, or make any decisions.
"An Omega like you has no right to guide future Alphas," she often said.
I loved my sons, and they loved me too, in their own innocent way. But I was not part of their lives. I was just on the outside, watching.
I placed a hand on my belly.
Would this child be kept away from me too? Raised by others while I watched?
After I got home, I cooked dinner for the family and set the table. I waited quietly for Calvin and the pups to come back.
Time passed slowly, but they were still not home.
I sat in the living room with my phone, unsure if I should call Calvin. Without a wolf, I could not join the pack bond or mind-link like the others.
Not that it mattered. Even if I could, they still looked down on me.
Just as I was about to call, my phone buzzed. It was a video message.
I opened it and saw the pack’s gathering place. Calvin sat in the main seat wearing a black suit. Our twins, Rowan and Rhys, sat beside him. Across from them was Clara.
Clara, Calvin’s first love, daughter of the Calypso Pack’s Alpha.
By the firelight, they looked happy. Rhys called out, "Aunt Clara!" with a smile. Calvin’s eyes were gentle,a side I had never seen. The video said. "Alpha’s Family."
My heart sank.
Clara asked Rhys, "Who do you like more, Aunt Clara or Mom?"
Without thinking, Rhys said, "Aunt Clara!"
I felt dizzy and rushed to the bathroom to throw up.
Five years. Five years as mates, and I never felt Calvin’s warmth. He was always cold to me. But now I saw his kindness for someone else.
What hurt most was that my sons seemed to like Clara more too.
I slid down the wall and let the tears fall.
Suddenly, I heard noise downstairs.I wiped my tears and went down.
Calvin carried sleeping Rowan upstairs.Rhys followed, talking happily. They froze when they saw me.
"Mommy!" Rhys ran to hug my legs. "We went to the Pack gathering with Aunt Clara today! It was so much fun!"
I forced a smile. "Really? That’s nice."
Calvin looked at me without feeling before going upstairs with Rowan.
I took a deep breath and said to Rhys,"Sweetheart, it’s bedtime. Do you want Mommy to take you upstairs?"
After putting Rhys to bed, I went to the master bedroom. Calvin was in the shower. I sat on the bed, waiting nervously.
The bathroom door opened and Calvin came out in a robe. He looked at me coldly. "Why aren’t you asleep?"
I gathered courage. "Calvin, I… I want to talk."
He paused, drying his hair. "What’s there to talk about?"
I met his eyes. "Why didn’t you bring me to the Pack gathering? I’m Luna. I have the right to join pack events."
He sneered, "Luna? Evelyn, don’t fool yourself. You’re just a breeding tool. Without the alliance, do you think you’d be my Luna?"
I was stunned. For five years, I thought we had something. But now, he denied it all.
"Then… what about Clara?" I asked. "Is she the Luna you want?"
His eyes darkened. He stepped close, his Alpha aura pressing down on me.
"Don't test my limits,Evelyn," he said. "Remember your place."
He left the room, leaving me to cry alone in the dark.
The next morning, I forced my exhausted body out of bed. Last night's conversation haunted me like a nightmare.
I prepared breakfast as usual, watching the twins devour their food. Calvin had already left without eating.
"Mommy," Rowan asked, "why can’t you turn into a wolf?"
My hand shook, nearly spilling my cup.
"Because… Mommy is special," I said with a weak smile.
Rhys pouted, "Aunt Clara says werewolves who can’t change are broken. Mommy, are you broken?"
I felt dizzy, holding back tears. "No, sweetie. Mommy is just… different."
"But Dad said…"
"Enough!" I raised my voice. "Finish your breakfast and go to Alpha training. No more questions!"
The twins were startled and lowered their heads, eating in silence. I turned and walked into the kitchen, crying soundlessly.
I remembered when I had just become Luna. There was a flu outbreak among the Pack’s pups, and I tried to help.
Beta Zeon didn’t even try to hide his disdain.
"Luna Evelyn," he said,"you’d best stay out of Pack matters.Alpha Calvin already has everything under control."
It was one thing for the pack members to look down on me.
But now… even my own pups?
Then the doorbell rang. I wiped my tears and opened the door.
Beta Zeon stood there.
"Luna Evelyn," he said. "Alpha Calvin has ordered that you move to the villa district starting today. It’s farther from the Packhouse, but more private."
I froze. "What? But… what about the pups?"
Zeon’s face was cold. "Alpha Calvin will arrange for their care. Don’t worry."
I wanted to argue but said nothing. I knew this was because Clara had returned, and Calvin wanted me to vacate the room for her.
"Okay," I whispered. "I’ll move out."
Beta Zeon nodded and left. I closed the door and leaned on it, feeling dizzy.
Suddenly, I heard noise upstairs.
"Rhys? Rowan?" I called, but no answer.
I ran upstairs. The twins’ room was empty.
My heart sank. No, the pups were missing!
I ran outside, calling their names through the silent forest.
Just as I was about to give up, I heard laughter.
Following the sound, I found Rowan and Rhys in a clearing.
But Calvin, Clara, and Diana were there too. The three adults and two pups were having a picnic, laughing happily.
I hid behind a tree, pain stabbing my chest.
"Dad, show us your wolf form again!" Rhys said excitedly.
Calvin smiled and turned into a black wolf. The twins cheered and climbed on his back.
Clara smiled and shifted into a brown wolf, running around them.
"Aunt Clara is amazing!" Rowan said.
Diana watched with a smile. "Clara is the perfect Luna. Not like that useless one who can’t shift."
My heart broke. If only I could transform, would things be different?
Calvin suddenly looked toward me. I ducked behind the tree.
"Come out," he said coldly.
I took a breath and stepped forward.
"Mommy!" the twins called, but Diana’s glare stopped them.
"Why are you here?" Diana asked coldly. "Can’t we have a peaceful picnic without you ruining it?"
I stood tall. "The pups disappeared. I was worried, so I came looking for them."
Clara smiled sweetly. "We should have told you. Sorry for not saying."
I looked at her, struggling to control my anger. "You took my pups without saying a word to me?"
Calvin frowned. "Watch your tone, Evelyn."
"Why should I?" I snapped. "They are MY pups! I have a right to know where they are!"
Diana laughed coldly. "Your pups?Don't forget, they're the heirs of the Bloodbane Pack. You, a wolfless Omega, what right do you have to interfere in Pack matters?"
Her words hit me hard. I stepped back, tears coming.
"Diana… you…" I choked. "How can you say that? I’m their mother!"
Clara adjusted her hair and smiled. "Don’t be upset. You tried. But the pups need a mother who can teach them Pack traditions. And you… clearly can’t."
I turned to the pups, "Rowan, Rhys, come back with Mommy." I hoped they would come to me, but what broke my heart was that they hid behind Clara instead, looking at me with doubt.
"Mommy,"Rowansaid, "Aunt Clara says you’re not Dad’s true mate. Is that true?"
Rhys said, "I want to stay with Aunt Clara, not you."
Clara looked at me. "See? The pups prefer me. Evelyn, you should understand, I'm the one who should be Calvin's mate. You're just a wolfless Omega, how could you be worthy of an Alpha?"
I looked at Calvin. He said nothing. Didn’t stop her. Didn’t deny it.
As if he had been waiting for this moment.
I broke down completely.
"Fine, I’ll give you what you want," I said through tears. "I, Evelyn Blackwell, reject you, Alpha Calvin of Bloodbane Pack, as my mate and Alpha."
The moment the words left my lips,I felt the pain of the mate bond severing, sharp and searing.
Calvin froze.
For a brief moment, I thought I saw a flicker of shock, maybe even hurt, in his eyes. But it was gone as quickly as it came, swallowed by his usual coldness.
Or maybe it was just my imagination.
And I turned and walked away.
I returned to my room and packed a few clothes and the savings.
Then I quietly entered the twins’ room.I opened the closet and touched their small clothes.
I took one photo from their album and left a short note on Rowan’s bed.
"Forgive Mommy, my sweet child. Maybe one day you’ll understand why I had to leave tonight."
With my bag on my hand and tears in my eyes, I walked out of the Packhouse without looking back.
I only hoped I’d never have to see Calvin again and that one day, my sons would forgive me.
Before crossing the Pack border, I placed a hand on my stomach.
"I’m sorry, baby. Mommy will protect you."
