Amara's POV

There are moments in life you can remember so well that years later, you can still hear the exact

sound of the clock ticking in the background. For me it was the night my husband stopped

looking at me with love and started looking at me like a criminal.I didn't know then that the

divorce papers waiting on the dinner table were only the beginning.I didn't know 30 million

dollars would destroy everything I had built, the man I loved would become someone I had to

defeat. All I knew was Adrian Blackwood had told me to sit down and there was something in his

eyes that made me realize my marriage was already over.

The moment I entered i noticed was the dining room, that the room was too quiet.

Adrian was sitting at the end of the table, across of the table his step mum Helena watching me

with an expression I couldn't quite read

On the table was a white envelope.

My name was written across it.

Amara Bennett.

I looked at Adrian.

“What is this??”

He said nothing.

I saw a smile across Helena’s face.

It was a kind of smile that you just know something is wrong.

The Adrian looked up and said “we need to talk about the 30 million dollars you stole from my

company”.

Ten hours earlier….

Amara wakes up before Adrian and watches him sleep. She smiling because she planned to do

his favorite dinner just to surprise him.

Adrian wakes up,pulled her closer and they have a cute husband and wife moment,he teases

her about staring at him she jokes that she is reconsidering marrying him

Adrian said “too late, you are stuck with me.”

Then Amara noticed something “his wedding ring”.

His wedding ring was sitting on the bedside table.

She asks why he took it off.

Adrian hesitated for just a second before saying:

“I must have taken it off in my sleep.”

He puts it back on,kisses her forehead, and leaves.

Amara thinks nothing of it.

I smiled to myself as I watched him disappear down the hallway.

There was something about this kind of mornings that made me forget how busy our lives had

become.

Adrian and I had been married for three years but sometimes he still made me feel we just

married yesterday.

I walked to the mirror and said to myself.

“Tonight had to be perfect.”

I had been the past few days thinking how I would tell him or how he would react after I tell him.

Maybe he would pull me into his arm maybe he would kiss me.

Or maybe he would just stare at me for a few seconds before saying something funny as usual.

Whatever will happen today must be special.

At least that is what I believed.

Later in the day ,when Amara was preparing for his favorite dinner.

There was something else she wanted to tell him tonight.

Something that would make him very happy.

Her phone vibrated against the kitchen counter.

She reached for her phone thinking it was a message from Adrian.

It wasn't him.

Unknown Number.

Amara frowned and opened the message.

There was only one sentence.

“Don't tell Adrian about the surprise.”

Her smile disappeared.

Before she could reply another message came in.

“I am serious Amara.”

She replied.

“Who is this?”

No response.

She waited, going from one corner to another.

She tried to convince herself that it was a stupid prank.

She proceeded to blocked the number and continued planning the dinner.

By 5 o’clock everything looked exactly the way she wanted.

Candles.

Fresh flowers.

Adrian favorite wine and meal.

She stepped back and smiled proudly.

“Perfect.”

Her phone buzzed again.

This time,it was Adrian.

“Running late don't wait for me.”

She typed back immediately.

“You promised seven.”

The typing notification appeared, then disappeared, appeared again, then disappeared.

Finally,his reply came.

“Something came up i will be home later.”

Her excitement slowly faded.

She planned the whole day preparing everything for him.

And tonight, she planned to tell the news she had been keeping for days.

She gave a small smile.

Maybe tonight would still be perfect.

I checked everything for the third time.

“I am definitely doing too much.”

I smiled but I didn't care.

Adrian worked too hard he rarely took time to rest I noticed lately he is always tired whenever he

comes back home.

Tonight was supposed to be different.

No work no meetings no phone calls.

Just us.

By 7:30,the candles were still burning.

By 8:15,the food had gone cold

By 9:00,Amara was sitting alone at the dining table.

She tried calling Adrian.

It went to voicemail.

She frowned.

She tried again.

Nothing.

She was about to call the third time, headlight shined across the living room windows.

Amara stood up immediately.

“Finally.”

She quickly went towards the door.

But when the door opened, her smile disappeared.

Adrian wasn't alone.

Helena stood beside him.

His stepmom.

And there were two men behind them,Amara had never see them before.

Adrian walked inside without saying anything.

Adrian?

He looked at her.

There was no warmth in his eyes.

No love,no smile.

Nothing.

There all went to the dining table.

All of them sat down except Amara.

Between them was a white envelope.

Amara Bennett.

Her heart dropped.

She looked at Adrian.

Her voice came out barely.

“What is this?”

Adrian finally looked up.

“We need to talk about the company”.

“What about it?”

He opened the file.

Inside were bank statements, transaction records and documents with her name.

Amara's confusion turned to fear.

“I don't understand.”

Adrian pushed one of the papers to her.

Her eyes scanned it.

Then stopped.

30 million dollars.

Her eyes widened.

“No….”

“Adrian what is this?”

His jaw tightened.

“30 million dollars was transferred from Blackwood international’s private account.”

“I didn't.”

“The money was transferred to an account under your name.”

Amara stared at him.

“That's impossible.”

Helena leaned back in her chair.

“Is it?”

Amara looked at her.

“Helena,I swear I don't know anything about this.”

Adrian’s expression still remained cold.

For the first time in their marriage,Amara could not recognize the man In front of her.

“Then explain this.”

He pushed another document to her.

It was an approved bank transfer.

Her signature was at the bottom.

Amara’s hands started shaking.

“That is not my signature.”

Adrian laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?.

“Yes!”

“Adrian, someone is setting me up.”

“Who?”

“I don't know!”

“Exactly”.

He rose his voice.

“You don't know anything.”

Amara’s eyes started to full with tears.

“Please believe me.”

Adrian said nothing.

Then he pushed a white envelope to her.

Amara stared at it.

Her name was written across the front.

Amara Bennett.

Her voice came out barely.

“What is that?.

Adrian looked directly into her eyes.

“The end of our marriage”.

Amara could not say anything.

He continued.

“I have already filed for divorce.”

The room went silent.

Amara could not breathe.

She looked at the envelope then to the man she had loved for years.

The man who kissed her forehead before leaving for work.

The surprise she had planned to give him suddenly felt impossible to say.

Adrian said.

“From tonight onward, Amara, you are no longer my wife.”

He turned towards the door.

Amara’s tears finally fell.

“Adrian.”

He turned to her.

I opened my mouth but no words came out.

There was something I had planned to tell him tonight.

Something I had been waiting days to say.

But after seeing the hatred in his eyes,I knew I couldn't.

Not yet.
