The rain had been falling since midnight.

It drummed against the rusty roof of the small house at the edge of the city, filling the darkness with a steady rhythm. Beyond the house, the narrow streets were almost empty. The occasional headlights of a passing car disappeared quickly into the night.

Inside the house, three boys sat close together around a dying lantern.

Daniel was seventeen.

Michael was fourteen.

Samuel, the youngest, was only nine.

Their father had been dead for three days.

None of them had spoken about it.

There was nothing left to say.

Their mother had died years earlier, and their father had been the only thing holding the family together. Now, with him gone, the house felt impossibly large despite its tiny rooms.

Daniel stared at the flame.

"We're going to be fine," he said.

Michael looked at him.

"How?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

He was only seventeen, but that night he understood something that would change his life forever.

He was no longer simply their brother.

He was their guardian.

"We stay together," Daniel finally said. "That's how."

Samuel wiped his eyes.

"Promise?"

Daniel looked at both of them.

"I promise."

Michael placed his hand on Daniel's.

Samuel placed his own hand on top.

"Together," Daniel whispered.

"Together," Michael repeated.

"Forever," Samuel added.

None of them knew how powerful that promise would become.

Ten years later, the three brothers were strangers.

Not by choice.

Life had separated them.

After their father's death, Daniel had done everything he could to keep the family together. But poverty was stronger than promises.

Daniel left school and began working at a mechanic's garage.

Michael, desperate for money, disappeared into the city.

Samuel was sent to live with an aunt in another town.

At first, they wrote letters.

Then the letters became fewer.

Then they stopped completely.

Years passed.

Daniel became a mechanic.

Michael became involved with criminals.

Samuel grew up believing his brothers had forgotten him.

But none of them had.

They simply didn't know how to find their way home.

Michael's path into the criminal world began with a man named Don Marcus.

Marcus owned restaurants, nightclubs, warehouses and several businesses throughout the city.

To ordinary people, he was a successful businessman.

To those who knew the truth, he was something else entirely.

He controlled a powerful criminal organization.

Michael met him when he was twenty-one.

At the time, Michael was working as a driver and barely earning enough to survive.

One evening, after delivering a package for a stranger, Michael was stopped by two men.

They searched his vehicle.

Inside the trunk was something Michael hadn't put there.

He immediately knew he had been set up.

Then Marcus appeared.

"You look frightened," Marcus said.

"I don't know what's happening."

Marcus smiled.

"I believe you."

Michael stared at him suspiciously.

"Why?"

"Because you look like a man who hasn't yet learned how cruel this city can be."

Marcus offered him a job.

Michael accepted.

That decision changed everything.

At first, the work seemed simple.

Driving.

Delivering packages.

Collecting money.

Watching doors.

Michael told himself that he wasn't a criminal.

He was only doing what he needed to survive.

But every step pulled him deeper.

And the money became harder to resist.

Daniel knew nothing about Michael's new life.

Until one night, a black car stopped outside the garage where he worked.

Daniel looked up from an engine.

Two men stepped out.

One of them approached him.

"Daniel Okoro?"

Daniel frowned.

"Yes."

"We need you to come with us."

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

"Someone who knows your brother."

Daniel froze.

"My brother?"

"Michael."

The wrench slipped from Daniel's hand.

For years he had wondered where Michael was.

Now, suddenly, someone had brought his name back into Daniel's life.

"Where is he?"

The man didn't answer.

"Come with us."

Daniel hesitated.

Then he remembered the promise they had made around the lantern.

Together.

He followed.

Across the city, Samuel was sitting alone in a small apartment.

He was twenty years old now.

On his table was an old photograph.

Three boys stood beside their father.

Daniel.

Michael.

Samuel.

Samuel touched the photograph gently.

"I haven't forgotten you," he whispered.

A knock came at the door.

Samuel stood.

"Who is it?"

No answer.

He opened the door slightly.

A man stood outside.

"You are Samuel Okoro?"

Samuel's heart began beating faster.

"Yes."

The man handed him an envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Michael.

Samuel stared at it.

His brother was older, harder and almost unrecognizable.

On the back of the photograph were four words:

Your brothers need you.

Samuel looked up.

But the man was already gone.

For the first time in years, Samuel felt something he had almost forgotten.

Hope.

That same night, Daniel was taken to a warehouse.

The door opened.

He stepped inside.

A man stood in the shadows.

Michael.

Daniel stopped breathing.

For several seconds, neither brother moved.

Michael looked older.

His face carried scars.

His eyes had lost the innocence Daniel remembered.

But beneath everything, Daniel could still see the fourteen-year-old boy who had once placed his hand over Daniel's and promised they would remain together.

"Michael," Daniel whispered.

Michael looked away.

"You're late."

Daniel stepped closer.

"I've been looking for you."

"No."

Michael's voice hardened.

"You stopped looking."

Daniel's face fell.

"That's not true."

"Then where were you?"

"I didn't know where you were."

Michael laughed bitterly.

"Nobody ever knows where I am."

Daniel studied his brother.

"What happened to you?"

Michael looked at him.

"What happened to all of us?"

Silence filled the warehouse.

Then another voice came from behind them.

"Beautiful reunion."

Both brothers turned.

Don Marcus stepped into the light.

He smiled.

"You two have been apart for a long time."

Daniel immediately understood.

Michael wasn't free.

Neither was he.

Marcus looked between the brothers.

"I brought you here because I have a job for you."

Daniel shook his head.

"I'm not interested."

Marcus smiled.

"You misunderstood."

He stepped closer.

"This isn't an invitation."

Daniel looked at Michael.

Michael lowered his eyes.

That was when Daniel understood the truth.

His brother was trapped.

And if Daniel wanted to save him, he would have to enter the same world that had destroyed him.

Daniel clenched his fists.

"What's the job?"

Marcus smiled.

"Now we're talking."

Outside, thunder rolled across the city.

And somewhere far away, Samuel held the old photograph against his chest.

The three brothers were moving toward each other again.

But none of them knew that their reunion would come at the center of a war.
