Introduction
"When my best friend Tessa’s parents kicked her out, I took her in. I gave her a job as my Executive Assistant. I mediated with her family, spent hours teaching her how to read contracts, and did everything in my power to help her stand on her own two feet. My husband, Grant Mercer, despised her. ""She can’t even align a data row correctly. How many more times are you going to hold her hand?"" he’d complain, tossing her reports onto my desk. ""She’s your EA, Claire, not a charity case. Keep indulging her, and she’s going to drag Bennett Technologies into a massive lawsuit."" I would always glare right back at him. ""When I hit rock bottom in college and you were studying abroad, Tessa was the one who pulled me out of the dark. You’re my husband. You should be thanking her, too."" Eventually, Tessa’s mistakes dwindled. I finally breathed a sigh of relief. Until I went to Seattle to handle a branch issue, finished two months early, and pushed open the door to my office. Tessa was sitting in my leather chair. Grant was standing behind her, his hand covering hers on the mouse, patiently guiding her through a data set. When my best friend Tessa’s parents kicked her out, I took her in. I gave her a job as my Executive Assistant. I mediated with her family, spent hours teaching her how to read contracts, and did everything in my power to help her stand on her own two feet.

My husband, Grant Mercer, despised her.

"She can’t even align a data row correctly. How many more times are you going to hold her hand?" he’d complain, tossing her reports onto my desk. "She’s your EA, Claire, not a charity case. Keep indulging her, and she’s going to drag Bennett Technologies into a massive lawsuit."

I would always glare right back at him. "When I hit rock bottom in college and you were studying abroad, Tessa was the one who pulled me out of the dark. You’re my husband. You should be thanking her, too."

Eventually, Tessa’s mistakes dwindled.

This was the same man who claimed he couldn't stand her incompetence.

"Care to explain?"

My voice was so calm it surprised even me.

Tessa shot up from the chair like she’d been burned, her cheeks flushing crimson. "Claire! You’re back early? I was just—I was trying to learn the new entry system, and Grant, he—"

Grant straightened up, completely unfazed. He didn't even flinch. "She keeps messing up the spreadsheets. I figured I’d show her the ropes so you wouldn’t have to stay at the office until midnight again."

I stared at the hand he had just rested over hers.

"Is that so? Let’s see exactly how thorough your teaching methods are."

I pulled out my phone, accessed the security camera mounted outside the glass conference room in the project collaboration zone, and hit playback.

On the screen, Grant pushed open the glass door. Tessa, sitting in my chair, spun around and looked up at him with a smile. Grant stepped in, resting one hand on the back of the chair. They locked eyes.

A second later, he leaned down and kissed her.

Tessa reached up and wrapped her arms around his neck.

The video ended there. I swiped to the next slide: the keycard access logs.

They had been alone in that glass room for forty-seven minutes.

I hit save and turned the screen toward them.

The air in the office froze.

Grant’s face went pale, then a mottled red. He tugged at his tie, and then, unbelievably, he let out a short, scoffing laugh.

"Fine. Since you saw it, I’m done pretending." He looked me dead in the eye. "Claire, I’ve fallen in love with Tessa."

He took a step forward, his tone shifting into that familiar, condescending register. "You’re too strong. When I’m with you, I don't feel needed. But Tessa is different. She needs my guidance. She needs me to make decisions for her. With her, I actually feel like a man."

Tessa collapsed to the floor, the tears flowing on command. "Claire, I’m so sorry... I never wanted to hurt you! He was just so good to me, and I couldn't stop myself—"

I looked at the two people I had trusted most in this world. My eyes burned, but I refused to let a single tear fall.

"I want a divorce."

I said it slowly, making sure every syllable landed.

"Grant, I am going to hold you accountable for every hidden asset, every stolen corporate opportunity, and every cent of damage you’ve done to my company. As for Leo, my lawyers and the King County Family Court will handle the custody arrangement."

Grant froze.

Tessa’s sobbing hitched in her throat.

I didn’t look at them again. I turned on my heel and walked out.

I didn't dare look back. If I did, I knew I would shatter right there in the hallway.

I drove straight to Leo’s private elementary school. He was the only thing I had left to hold onto.

When the bell rang, he ran toward me, but his eyes immediately darted behind me.

"Mom, where are Dad and Tessa?"

I stiffened.

Leo pouted, his little face scowling. "They promised they’d pick me up together today. Tessa said she was taking me to get ice cream at the new place!"

At that moment, something inside me cracked open.

My voice felt hollow, drifting away in the wind. "They were busy today. Mom will take you home, okay?"

"Fine."

Leo swatted my hand away.
