Chapter 1
The Ceremony of Ruin
“Under the blessing of the Moon Goddess, we gather tonight to witness the claiming of fated mates.”
The Elder’s voice carried across the clearing.
Hundreds of wolves watched.
And Aria Vale stood alone at the center of it all.
The stone dais beneath her feet felt colder than winter.
Torches surrounded the ceremonial ground, their flames snapping in the restless wind. Beyond them, the warriors of Nightfall Pack stood in a wide circle, dark leather armor catching flickers of firelight. Omegas whispered behind cautious hands. Elders leaned on carved staffs polished by generations.
All of them had come to witness the same moment.
The moment their Alpha would claim his Luna.
Aria swallowed.
Her fingers trembled slightly at her sides, but she forced them still. A Luna should not appear weak.
The white dress she wore was simple. No jewels. No embroidery.
She had refused the seamstress’s suggestions earlier that morning.
“A Luna must look radiant,” the woman had insisted.
Aria had only shaken her head.
She didn’t need to look radiant.
She only needed to look worthy.
The mate bond inside her chest pulsed gently.
Warm.
Alive.
He’s coming.
Her wolf stirred beneath her skin, restless with anticipation.
Then the pack suddenly fell silent.
From the stone steps above the clearing, Alpha Kael Thorn appeared.
He descended slowly, every movement controlled dominance.
Black ceremonial coat stretched across broad shoulders. Dark hair pulled loosely behind his neck. His boots struck the stone with measured finality.
Power followed him like a living thing.
Aria’s breath caught.
His scent reached her first — cedarwood and smoke, layered with something darker that always made her pulse stumble.
Mine.
The golden mate bond shimmered between them.
Invisible to humans, but clear to wolves who knew what to look for. A glowing thread stretched from his chest to hers.
Bright.
Unbreakable.
Or so she believed.
She had dreamed of this moment since the day the bond first ignited.
She had been eighteen then.
Kael had looked at her across the training grounds with stunned recognition.
For one brief moment, something had flashed in his eyes.
Not warmth.
But something close.
Hope had taken root inside her that day.
Now he stood three steps away.
Too far.
He didn’t reach for her.
Didn’t touch her.
Didn’t even look pleased.
The Elder raised his staff.
“Alpha Kael Thorn,” he said formally. “Do you accept the bond granted by the Moon Goddess and claim Aria Vale as your mate and Luna of Nightfall Pack?”
A ripple of anticipation moved through the crowd.
Aria’s heart pounded violently.
The golden bond between them pulsed brighter.
This was it.
Kael only needed to say two words.
I accept.
But he didn’t speak.
Silence stretched.
The wind died.
Her wolf shifted uneasily.
Something was wrong.
Kael’s jaw tightened.
And then
“I do not.”
The words struck like a blade through bone.
The entire clearing erupted in gasps.
Aria blinked, certain she had misheard.
Kael’s cold gaze fixed on her.
“Aria Vale,” he said, his voice amplified by Alpha command, carrying across every corner of the clearing.
“I reject you as my mate.”
Something inside her chest shattered.
“No…”
Pain exploded through her body.
Not sharp.
Not clean.
Ripping.
The golden bond twisted violently as if being torn apart from the inside.
Aria collapsed to her knees on the cold stone.
The rejection ritual was supposed to be private.
Quiet.
Merciful.
Not like this.
Not before the entire pack.
The whispers started instantly.
“She’s shaking.”
“She can’t even stand.”
“That’s the girl with the traitor father.”
“A Luna should command respect.”
Aria’s stomach twisted.
Her father’s name still stained her blood.
Traitor.
That was what the pack had called him before his execution.
Sixteen years old.
That was how old she had been when they dragged him away.
Kael had said nothing then.
He said nothing now.
“I need a Luna who strengthens this pack,” Kael continued evenly.
“Not one who carries disgrace in her blood.”
The words hit harder than the rejection.
Her wolf whimpered in agony.
The bond jerked violently one last time
And then something unexpected happened.
Instead of breaking…
It exploded.
A violent shockwave burst outward from Aria’s body.
Torches flickered wildly.
Several warriors stumbled backward.
The stone beneath her palms cracked as silver light streaked beneath her skin.
Aria screamed.
But the sound shifted halfway through.
Deeper.
Older.
Power surged through her veins like molten metal.
This wasn’t the emptiness rejection should bring.
This was ignition.
The golden bond between her and Kael didn’t disappear.
It fractured.
And turned silver.
Kael staggered back, eyes widening for the first time that night.
“What did you do?”
Aria barely heard him.
Her senses sharpened brutally.
She could hear individual heartbeats in the crowd.
Smell fear rising like iron in the air.
The rejection mark burned against her collarbone.
But instead of fading
It glowed.
Silver.
An Elder fell to his knees.
“Impossible…”
Her vision blurred.
Images flashed across her mind.
A throne carved from bone and moonlight.
A crown of silver fire.
Blood on ancient stone.
And a whispering voice older than time itself.
The line does not end.
Aria gasped, fingers digging into fractured rock.
“Stand down!”
Kael’s Alpha command thundered across the clearing.
Wolves bowed instinctively.
Aria didn’t.
The command struck her like a wave.
And dissolved.
As if her blood rejected it.
Kael’s face went pale.
Her wolf rose inside her.
Not submissive.
Not broken.
Dominant.
Slowly, Aria lifted her head.
“You rejected me,” she said hoarsely.
The air around her shimmered faintly.
“And yet… the bond remains.”
The silver thread between them pulsed sharply.
Kael felt it.
She saw the tension flash across his face.
A slow clap echoed from the edge of the clearing.
Measured.
Deliberate.
Every wolf turned.
From the shadow of the trees stepped a tall figure dressed in black.
He moved like a predator that feared nothing.
Golden eyes reflected the torchlight.
The Elders stiffened immediately.
“Lycan King,” one whispered.
Alpha Kael’s shoulders squared.
“This is Nightfall territory.”
The newcomer’s gaze never left Aria.
“Clearly,” he replied smoothly.
His presence was different from an Alpha’s.
Where Kael’s power pressed down like a mountain, this man’s felt like a blade resting against the throat.
Ancient.
Controlled.
Dangerous.
Lucian Drax stepped fully into the firelight.
And smiled.
Not kindly.
Not mockingly.
Assessing.
His eyes traced the silver fractures glowing beneath Aria’s skin.
“Fascinating,” he murmured.
Kael stepped in front of her instinctively.
A territorial gesture.
After rejecting her.
Lucian raised an eyebrow.
“You discard what you do not understand, Alpha.”
“This does not concern you.”
Lucian’s gaze flicked briefly to him before returning to Aria.
“On the contrary,” he said calmly.
“It concerns me very much.”
Aria slowly pushed herself to her feet.
Her body felt… different.
Stronger.
Balanced.
Lucian tilted his head.
“How are you standing?”
“I don’t know.”
But she knew one thing.
She wasn’t dying.
Lucian inhaled slowly.
Testing her scent.
Recognition flickered across his face.
“Well,” he murmured quietly.
“That explains it.”
Kael’s patience snapped.
“Explain yourself.”
Lucian looked at him calmly.
“You attempted to reject her.”
“Yes.”
“And the bond did not break.”
Kael said nothing.
Lucian’s golden eyes sharpened.
“Do you know why?”
Silence fell across the clearing.
Lucian turned back to Aria.
“Because she is not merely wolf.”
A ripple of alarm spread through the crowd.
Lucian addressed the entire pack.
“Congratulations,” he said mildly.
“You have just tried to discard royal blood.”
The word detonated across the clearing.
Royal.
Aria’s pulse thundered.
“That bloodline died centuries ago,” an Elder protested weakly.
Lucian’s gaze remained steady.
“Apparently,” he replied softly, “it did not.”
Aria stared at her glowing hands.
Royal?
Her father had been executed for treason.
What if
“No,” she whispered.
Her thoughts spiraled.
Kael’s voice cut through sharply.
“You will remain under pack supervision.”
Not concern.
Control.
Aria straightened.
The humiliation returned in a burning wave.
He rejected her.
Blamed her blood.
And now tried to command her.
“You don’t get to command me,” she said quietly.
Murmurs rippled through the pack.
Kael’s eyes darkened.
“I am still your Alpha.”
Her wolf rose calmly beneath her skin.
“For now.”
Gasps spread through the clearing.
Aria turned and walked away.
The pack parted before her.
Not in disdain.
In wariness.
The silver bond between her and Kael pulsed violently.
He felt it.
Good.
Because one day…
He would feel regret too.
As she reached the edge of the clearing, moonlight washed over her skin.
For a brief second
Her shadow shifted.
Not wolf.
Not human.
Something larger.
Ancient.
And deep in the forest…
Golden eyes watched her disappear into the night.
Smiling.
