The first thing Elena Rossi noticed was the silence.
Not the music drifting through the crystal ballroom.
Not the soft clink of champagne glasses.
Not the polite laughter of Nova City’s wealthiest families.
It was the silence that followed whenever one man entered a room.
The conversations faded.
The smiles stiffened.
Even the waiters unconsciously stepped aside.
Elena looked up from the silver tray she carried.
The grand doors of the Blackwood Grand Hotel had opened.
A tall man walked in, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. His movements were unhurried, almost effortless, yet every step commanded attention. He wasn’t surrounded by bodyguards. He didn’t need to be.
Power walked with him.
His dark hair was neatly combed back, revealing sharp features that looked as though they had been carved from stone. Cold gray eyes swept across the ballroom with quiet confidence before settling on no one in particular.
“Who is he?” Elena whispered to the waitress beside her.
The older woman nearly dropped the wine bottle she was holding.
“You don’t know?”
Elena shook her head.
“That’s Adrian De Luca.”
The name meant nothing to her.
“It should,” the woman muttered. “He’s one of the most powerful men in the country.”
Before Elena could ask another question, the ballroom manager hurried toward her.
“Elena.”
She straightened immediately.
“Yes, sir?”
“Table twelve. Personally.”
She glanced across the room.
Table twelve sat alone near the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Only one man occupied it.
Adrian De Luca.
Her stomach tightened.
She picked up a bottle of expensive red wine and walked toward him.
Every instinct told her to be careful.
When she reached the table, Adrian didn’t look up from the document in his hand.
“Your wine, sir.”
His voice was calm.
“I didn’t order wine.”
Elena blinked.
“The manager asked me to”
“I know.”
Only then did he lift his eyes to meet hers.
For one brief moment, the noise of the ballroom disappeared.
His gaze was unreadable.
Not flirtatious.
Not warm.
Simply observant.
“You’ve never served me before.”
“No, sir.”
“What is your name?”
“Elena Rossi.”
Something changed.
It lasted less than a second.
A flicker of recognition crossed his face before disappearing behind his usual composure.
“You work here part-time?”
“Yes.”
“And attend university during the day?”
She frowned.
“How do you know that?”
Instead of answering, Adrian closed the file in front of him.
“I have a meeting with your father.”
“My father?”
Confusion spread through her.
“There must be some mistake.”
“There isn’t.”
Before she could ask another question, the ballroom doors opened again.
Marco Rossi hurried inside.
His usually neat appearance had vanished.
His suit was wrinkled.
His face looked exhausted.
The moment he spotted Adrian, all the color drained from his face
“Mr. De Luca…”
Marco stopped beside the table, his breathing uneven.
“I’m sorry I’m late.”
Adrian rose to his feet.
“No. You’re exactly on time.
Elena stared between the two men.
“Dad?”
Marco couldn’t meet her eyes.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
He swallowed hard.
“I… needed to speak with Mr. De Luca.”
“About what?”
Neither man answered.
Adrian gestured toward the empty chair.
“Sit.”
Marco obeyed immediately.
The simple command unsettled Elena more than if Adrian had shouted.
No one spoke for several long seconds.
Finally, Adrian opened the file.
“The repayment date has arrived.”
Marco lowered his head.
“I know.”
“I’ve reviewed your accounts.”
Silence.
“You cannot pay.”
Another silence.
“No.”
Elena looked from Adrian to her father.
“What repayment?”
Marco closed his eyes.
“I borrowed money.”
“How much?”
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.”
His voice broke
“Twelve million dollars.”
The words hit Elena like ice water.
“Twelve… million?”
She laughed in disbelief.
“That’s impossible.”
“I thought I could save the company.”
“What company?”
“The construction business.”
“You sold it three years ago.”
“I tried to rebuild.”
He finally looked at her.
“I failed.”
Elena felt the room begin to spin.
Every overtime shift.
Every unpaid bill.
Every excuse.
Her father had been carrying this alone.
And now…
It had caught up with him.
Adrian calmly turned another page.
“The contract contains a default clause.”
Marco’s hands began to shake.
“I know.”
“What default clause?” Elena demanded.
Neither man answered immediately.
Then Adrian closed the file with a quiet click.
“One that changes both of your lives.”
Elena’s heartbeat quickened.
She had no idea…
That before the night ended…
She would be asked to make the most impossible choice of her life.
The words echoed in Elena’s mind.
One that changes both of your lives.
She looked from Adrian to her father.
Neither of them spoke.
The silence became unbearable.
“What default clause?” she asked again, her voice sharper this time.
Marco’s shoulders slumped.
“Please…”
His voice was barely audible.o
“Don’t make me say it.”
Elena’s chest tightened.
“Dad.”
She knelt beside him.
“Look at me.”
Slowly, he raised his head.
Tears filled his tired eyes.
“I never wanted you involved.”
“Then tell me what’s happening.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Adrian stepped forward.
“The agreement states that if your father failed to repay the loan on the due date, I would have the right to recover the debt through an alternative arrangement.”
Elena frowned.
“What arrangement?”
Adrian held her gaze.
“You.”
The room fell silent.
She stared at him, certain she had misheard.
“…What?”
“I am offering a marriage.”
Elena blinked.
Then laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“A marriage?”
“Yes.”
“To who?”
His expression never changed.
“To me.”
The smile vanished from her face.
For several long seconds, she simply looked at him.
Then she shook her head.
“No.”
Her answer came without hesitation.
“No?”
“I don’t know what kind of twisted joke this is, but the answer is no.”
“It isn’t a joke.”
“I don’t care.”
She took a step toward him.
“You think because you’re rich and powerful you can buy people?”
“I am buying no one.”
“You just used my father as collateral.”
“I accepted the terms he signed.”
She turned sharply toward Marco.
“You agreed to this?”
Marco covered his face with trembling hands.
“I had no choice.”
“There is always a choice.”
“They were going to take everything.”
“So you chose me instead?”
The pain on Marco’s face was answer enough.
A tear rolled down Elena’s cheek.
“You promised you’d always protect Isabella and me.”
“I know.”
“You promised.”
“I know.”
His voice broke completely.
“And I failed.”
Elena looked away before she could cry any harder.
She refused to fall apart in front of Adrian De Luca.
Adrian remained where he stood, calm and composed.
He wasn’t smiling.
He wasn’t pleased.
If anything…
He looked almost… regretful.
“You may hate me,” he said quietly.
“But I won’t apologize for honoring a legal agreement.”
Elena’s eyes flashed.
“You expect me to marry a man I’ve known for less than five minutes?”
“No.”
“Then what exactly do you expect?”
“I expect you to make a decision after hearing the truth.”
“What truth?”
“Not tonight.”
Her anger flared again.
“You’ve already said enough.”
She grabbed her father’s arm.
“We’re leaving.”
Marco didn’t move.
He couldn’t.
Because he knew walking away solved nothing.
Adrian reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and removed a black business card.
He placed it on the table.
“The agreement your father signed expires tonight.”
Elena’s heart pounded.
“However…”
His voice remained steady.
“This decision is no longer his to make.”
He looked directly into her eyes.
“It is yours.”
She lifted her chin.
“I already told you my answer.”
“I expected you would.”
For the first time, the faintest hint of a smile touched his lips.
“Which is why I’m giving you twenty-four hours.”
She frowned.
“Why?”
“Because a marriage built on force cannot become a partnership.”
His gray eyes never left hers.
“I want you to understand exactly what you’re choosing.”
He slid the business card toward her.
“Tomorrow.”
“Six o’clock.”
“Come to my office and give me your answer.”
He turned toward the exit.
Halfway to the ballroom doors, he stopped.
Without looking back, he spoke one final time.
“If you refuse…”
His voice carried through the silent room.
“…I will enforce every legal right granted by your father’s contract.”
The grand doors closed behind him.
Only then did Elena realize she had been holding her breath.
She looked down at the black business card lying on the table.
Stamped into the center was a silver rose.
Elegant.
Simple.
Unforgettable.
She didn’t know it yet…
But that small silver rose had already been shaping her destiny long before Adrian De Luca walked into her life.
