The cold breeze, a gloomy morning, the rain drizzling down her windows and her brother’s text. These were the first things that Azrielle Adeh is greeted with as she wakes up every morning in her apartment located in the city of London, her phone buzzing against her table before she could get down from her bed. A message was sent.
Edward: Good morning princess, how was your night? I hope it was good. Make sure to eat breakfast.
Azrielle sighed dramatically as she buried her face into her pillow in frustration, “Urghhh, I am literally twenty and my thirty year old brother still treats me like I’m ten”.
As if Mother Earth heard her complaint and decided to be cruel, another notification popped on her screen.
Edward: And don’t skip breakfast this time. With a frustrated groan she gets up from her bed and walks towards her room’s curtains.
With London’s dull sunlight casting its light into her room, making it a little darker , worsening her mood in the process. She sits on her reading chair as her fingers move through her phone’s keyboard.
Azrielle: Good morning to you dear brother. Almost immediately, the three dots appeared on her screen showing her brother is online and replying to her messages.
Edward:Have you had breakfast? Azrielle stared at the message her brother sent for a while, then at the ceiling then back at the message.
Azrielle: Can’t you have a normal conversation with your sister?
After about two minutes of not getting a response from her brother, her overprotective, overbearing and very stubborn brother that she loves with all her heart she decided to ignore her question. With nothing else to do she decided to make breakfast.
As she made her way to the kitchen, she realized that her apartment was much quieter than usual, with her floors looking way too clean and the light from her apartment lighting up the place. You would expect her to be in love with her life, but she wasn’t.
Most people would kill for a life like hers with no student loan, no rent, no financial worries. Everything was provided, but everything was controlled, her life, her uni, what she is majoring in, everything and sometimes Azrielle wonders if she is really living her life or if she is trapped in a decorated world. The thought goes through her mind as she makes breakfast for herself.
As she was making breakfast, her phone vibrated again but this time it wasn’t Edward, it was Sloan.
Sloan: Let’s skip class.
Azrielle laughed out loud, as she replied to her best friends and sister from another mother’s message,
Azrielle: Good morning to you.
Sloan: I found this cool new coffee spot and guess what they also have a bakery too.
Azrielle: ooo wow what wonderful information, I don’t care
Sloan: hahaha you thought you ate right???
Azrielle: ohh yes I did.
Sloan: oo come Azrielle, you know how much I like trying out new places and they also sell strawberry croissants by the way.
Sloan: And you of all people know how much I loveeee strawberry croissants. So please Azrielle it’s practically an emergency.
Seeing the message Azrielle shook her head, only Sloan Mercer could classify pastries as an emergency.
Azrielle: See you in class Sloan
Sloan: Urghhh TRAITOR.
By afternoon Sloan was still complaining, “ do you realize how betrayed I feel right now”, Azrielle laughed as they crossed the university courtyard, “ stop whining Sloan you survived”.
“I barely survived those evil classes without thinking about my sweet, yummy strawberry croissants” Sloan said as they walked past students walking in different directions, some were walking towards the Coffee shop to get their daily coffee or tea, whilst others were rushing to their next class. This was one of the many reasons Azrielle loved university, not because of the class, or the freedom many think it gives, or even architecture. No, she loved it because it was one of the few places that made her feel normal, a normal average student, not Edward Adeh’s sister or Gabriel Adeh’s daughter, just Azrielle. “ Are you even listening to me?”
“No.”, Sloan gasped loudly at Azrielle’s reply, “ You wound me.”
“I have heard you say that today three times already”, “well let’s make it four.”
They continued walking towards their lecture hall in silence, then suddenly Sloan breaks the silence as usual. “ You know what your problem is?” She asked. “ naa but I have a feeling you would love to educate me on it,” “ You never do anything fun.”
Azrielle paused, raising her eyebrows in the process, “ That’s my problem?, I really doubt that.”
“ That’s definitely your problem Azrielle, you’re twenty for God’s sake.” ” And how is that a problem?” Azrielle asked. “ You literally just study, stay home and spend your free time with either Edward or me.” “That’s sad and boring darling”, “ Urghh it’s called being responsible, you weirdo“. “ I highly doubt that princess.”
Azrielle rolled her eyes, trying to cover up the fact that her best friend's words got to her and maybe Sloan was right.
After lectures which ended pretty early today , Azrielle and Sloan stepped outside and realized that the rain had started falling heavily, classic London.
Her phone vibrated with a message from Edward popping up on her phone screen,
Edward: The driver is on his way.
She sighed replying to his message , Azrielle: I have a car Edward, did you forget that useful information.
Edward: I know but it isn’t safe to drive in this weather, so the driver is coming to pick you and Sloan, end of discussion.
Sighing in defeat , she sits on the bench telling Sloan what a brother texted her. She watches other people run towards their cars or the bus, whilst she has to wait for the driver. Again.
“ Your brother is ridiculous” , “ I know.” “No seriously, he acts like a paranoid mother “, Azrielle laughed just as a black car parks in front of them, perfect timing.
“ Azrielle listen to me,” Sloan said loudly, “ Stop shouting Sloan and let’s go home dude, I am quite exhausted.” “ One day you would rebel,” Sloan said. “ I highly doubt that Sloan” Azrielle replied, as they entered the car.
