The first time Elena Brooks saw Noah Carter again, she dropped a tray of champagne glasses .
Crystal exploded across the polished marble floor, the sharp sound cutting through the elegant music drifting around the bathroom. Conversations stopped. Dozens of curious eyes turned toward her.
"I'm so sorry" Elena breathed, already kneeling to gather the broken pieces.
Her hands trembled . She blamed the weight of the tray
She knew that wasn't the truth.
" Don't touch them "
The voice stopped her cold
Deep.
Calm.
Unforgettable .
Her heartbeat stumbled as she slowly looked up.
Five years.
Five years has passed, yet she would have recognized those blue-gray eyes anywhere
Noah Carter.
He stood a few feet away in a tailored black suit, one hand tucked into his pocket, the other holding a glass of sparkling water . He looked older, more confident, and impossibly handsome. But there was something else in his expression .
Distance.
The kind that only came from heartbreak .
For one impossible second, neither of them spoke .
The music faded into the background.
The guests disappeared .
It was just the two of them ... And every memory Elena has spent years trying to bury .
" You work here ?" Noah finally asked.
His voice was polite.
Too polite.
" As of three weeks ago"
" I see"
That was all he said .
No anger.
No accusation.
No smile.
Just two words that somehow hurt more than if he had shouted on her.
A member of the hotel member rushed over with a broom.
"I'll handle this, Miss Brooks "
Elena nodded quickly and stood, smoothing the wrinkles from her navy blue uniform.
She wanted to run.
Instead, she forced herself to meet Noah's eyes.
" You look... well".
He gave a humorless laugh
" Do I?
The question lingered between them.
She remembered the last time she'd seen him.
The unopened letter in her bag
The train station
The promise she'd never spoken.
Before she could find the courage to say anything
else, someone called Noah's name.
" There you are! The investors are waiting "
He glanced at Elena one last time
" I hope life has been kind to you"
Then he walked away .
She watched him disappear into the crowd, her chest tightening with every step he took.
Only after he was gone did she realize she was crying. She wiped them away before anyone noticed.
Outside the ballroom windows, the ocean rolled gently against the shore as the evening sun disappeared beneath the horizon.
Five years ago, Elena believed leaving Noah would save them both.
Tonight she wasn't so sure.
And for the first time in years, she wondered if some stories were never meant to end with goodbye.
