'How are you feeling?' the doctor asked immediately Camilla flapped her eyelids open.
'My husband, my baby,' she whispered.
'You had a baby girl, she's currently in the nursery. You were brought by an elderly woman and she is the one who has been coming for the past one week, I haven't seen your husband,' the doctor answered.
'I've been here for one week? You did an operation on me?' she asked.
'Yes, to save you and the baby, we had to perform surgery on you. You were in a critical condition when you were brought. The woman said you fell and that caused the bleeding,' the doctor explained. She was unconscious when she was brought.
'Thank you for saving my daughter, can I see her?' she asked impatiently.
'It's our job to save lives, I'll organize a wheelchair for you since you aren't strong enough to walk around,' the doctor walked out and Camilla was left drowning in sorrow.
The events of what happened to her were still fresh in her mind.
Flashback
Camilla came out of the bathroom with a towel tied around her chest. Being seven months pregnant and her high appetite she was kinda big, unlike the normal, slender Camilla.
She found Fred her husband talking on the phone. She thought it was one of his colleagues but the conversation caught her attention.
'You looked nice today,' Fred commented to whoever he was talking to.
'Really, I'm I always ugly?' Camilla immediately knew he was talking to a woman.
She always had a feeling he was cheating on her but never thought he could bring it to the house. To avoid getting stressed she went to the closest to dress up. On coming back he was already done talking on the phone and was dressing up.
'Are you going out?' she asked.
'No, I'm going to the toilet,' he replied rudely. Camilla couldn't remember them fighting but everything changed when she found out she was pregnant.
They had been married for four years and she had prayed for a baby. When she first told Fred about the news, he was happy and even bought her a car as a gift to show gratitude for making him a dad.
Then one night three weeks later he changed. He started coming home drank and always finding a reason to insult her. He had never for once hit her but the insults broke her heart.
Sometimes she thought she was used to the insults but that wasn't the case and she was only holding on to the fact that she was pregnant maybe he'll change once she delivers.
'I only asked because it's late,' she defended.
'Instead of caring about yourself and that bastard you are carrying you care about me?' he said more like a question than a statement. She gave him a last stare, picked her car keys on the table, and started walking away.
'Where do you think you are going?' Fred yelled behind her making her stop.
'I just thought it wouldn't be bad if I join you in the toilet,' she replied.
She was already fed up with him and all she wanted was to visit her mom's house to reduce the stress.
'Get a look of yourself, do you want the neighbors to think that I'm wicked?' he yelled.
'Are you not?' she asked and walked out. Fred followed her behind and got hold of her near the stairs. She couldn't walk that fast due to her pregnancy.
'Now, go back to that room before I do something that we will both regret,' he threatened but she ignored him. She took the first stair and he got hold of her hand to pull her back.
'Let me go,' Camilla yelled as she lost her balance and rolled down the stairs. Fred ran down, took the keys that had fallen from her arm, and ran out. That was all she could remember before she lost consciousness. Camilla didn't even know who the woman was and how she found her.
End of flashback.
The door opened again and Elsa entered. She was the only elderly woman in the neighborhood.
'My daughter you are awake? I wasn't able to call any family member as I didn't have their contact and I didn't even see your phone,' Elsa, said.
'Thank you for taking care of me,' Camilla thanked her.
'You are welcome, your husband called me and said he was trying to get in touch with you but you weren't picking and I should come and check on you. Thank God I arrived in time, or else it could be a different story. You are very lucky to have a husband like him, he said he will come back as soon as possible,' Elsa, added placing the basket she had on the table beside Camilla.
Camilla was confused, he left her then call someone else and still lie? She knew telling Elsa the truth will complicate things so she opted to remain silent.
'Can you lend me your phone?' she asked.
'I left my phone at home but I got my granddaughter's phone with me. You can use it right?' Elsa asked and she nodded.
She just needed a means of communication. She took the phone and dialed her husband's number. She just wanted to prove if he cared about her. It rang the first time but he didn't pick.
'You are calling your husband?' Elsa asked and she nodded. I talked to him in the morning before I left the house and he said he will be in meeting the whole day and we'll be free in the evening,'
'Meeting?' Camilla asked to be sure she heard the correct thing. Fred doesn't work, he spends his parent's money as they had made a lot of money and had a lot of investments and him being the only son, he was the sole heir. He can't even spend an hour in any meeting unless in the club. They met in college and he was a good man but recently he spends on stupid things.
'Yes a business meeting,' Elsa said.
'He lied to you,' Camilla's mind yelled but couldn't yell out loud. Who yells to a grown woman? She wished she could tell Elsa that her marriage was a big lie.
'I'm going to the nursery to feed the baby, you call your family,'
'Thank you, I'm waiting for the wheelchair, I'll join you,' Camilla said.
She wanted to see which meeting Fred went to before she looks for her mom so she called him again.
'Hello,' it was a woman's voice so she didn't speak, she just kept quiet and listened.
'Baby, the person isn't even speaking,' the woman complained to Camilla thought to be Fred.
'Then hang up, he or she will call when they feel like,' Camilla heard Fred's voice and her heart sank.
She thought he said he was in a business meeting? Or was the meeting in a bedroom? She couldn't take it anymore so she hang up.
