The night sky above the village of Oakhaven was usually filled with thousands of bright stars, twinkling like diamonds scattered across a deep blue blanket. But tonight, something was different.
Elara sat by her bedroom window, her elbows resting on the wooden frame as she stared up at the heavens. She loved looking at the stars; her mother used to tell her that each star was a soul watching over the people living below.
"Elara! Close the window, it's getting cold!" her mother called from the other room.
"Just a little longer, Mother!" Elara replied, smiling softly.
She was about to stand up and close the glass when suddenly… the sky began to glow.
Whoosh!
Bright streaks of light started falling from the sky, not just one or two, but hundreds and thousands. It looked like the sky was crying tears made of pure gold and silver. The whole village lit up as bright as day, and the sound of gasps and shouts could be heard from every house.
"Stars… the stars are falling!" Elara whispered, her eyes wide with wonder.
She ran outside barefoot, feeling the soft grass under her feet. Everyone was out in the streets, pointing up, amazed by the beautiful sight. But Elara felt something else. A strange warmth was spreading through her chest, as if something inside her was waking up after a very long sleep.
"Come…"
A soft voice echoed inside her mind. It was gentle, like the wind blowing through the trees.
"Come find us… the light is waiting."
Elara didn't know why, but her feet started moving on their own. She walked past her confused neighbors, past the village gates, and towards the dark, mysterious forest that everyone was told never to enter. The forest was called the Boundary of Shadows, and legends said that anyone who went in never came back the same.
But Elara wasn't afraid. The light guiding her was too strong.
She walked for what felt like hours, until she reached a small, clear lake in the middle of the woods. The water was so still it looked like a mirror reflecting the sky. And right in the center of the lake, floating above the water, was the brightest star of them all. It was glowing with a soft, white light that seemed to pulse gently, like a heartbeat.
As Elara stepped closer, the light suddenly shot towards her!
"Ah!" she gasped, closing her eyes, waiting for the impact.
But instead of hurting her, the light entered her body, flowing through her veins like warm water. It felt powerful, safe, and full of love. When she opened her eyes, everything looked different. She could see tiny glowing particles floating in the air—magic that was invisible to normal eyes.
"You have been chosen, the voice spoke again, clearer this time. The darkness is coming, Elara. The Shadow King is waking up, and he wants to cover the whole world in eternal night. Only the power of Starlight can stop him… and only you can wield it."
Elara looked at her hands. A soft golden light was glowing from her palms, flickering like small flames.
"But… I'm just a normal girl. How can I do this?" she asked, her voice trembling a little.
"You are not ordinary. You are the Light Bearer. But you cannot do it alone. You must find the others… and be careful. Not everyone who walks in the dark is your enemy."
Suddenly, the peaceful atmosphere changed. The temperature dropped instantly, and the bright light around her dimmed. A cold, heavy mist began to roll across the ground, turning the green grass into gray and lifeless soil.
From the shadows of the tall trees, a figure stepped out.
He looked around her age, with messy black hair and eyes that were as dark as the midnight sky. He wore dark clothes that seemed to blend perfectly with the shadows around him. In his hand, he held a sword made of pure darkness, and black smoke swirled around his fingers.
Elara stepped back, raising her glowing hands in defense.
"Who are you?" she asked, her heart beating fast. "Are you… one of his soldiers?"
The boy stopped walking. He looked at the light shining from Elara, then looked down at his own hands where dark energy was swirling. His expression was unreadable—cold, but also… lonely.
"I am Kael," he said, his voice deep and calm. "And you… you are the one they call the Light Bearer."
He raised his weapon slightly, but he didn't attack.
"They told me to destroy you. That light and dark can never exist together. That if you live, my world will end."
Elara didn't lower her guard, but she didn't attack either. She looked into his eyes, and instead of seeing hatred or evil, she saw pain and sadness. It was the same feeling she felt when she was missing her mother… like you are carrying a heavy burden all by yourself.
"And do you believe them?" Elara asked softly.
Kael paused. He looked at the glowing starlight surrounding her, then at the darkness surrounding him.
"I don't know what to believe anymore," he whispered.
Just then, the ground began to shake violently. A loud roar echoed from deep within the forest, and the shadows around them grew thicker and more dangerous. Dark creatures made of smoke and darkness started appearing from the trees, growling and showing their sharp teeth.
"They are coming," Kael said, stepping closer to Elara. "Whether we are enemies or not… right now, if we don't run, we will both die."
Elara looked at the monsters approaching, then back at Kael. She felt the power inside her hum with energy, ready to protect.
"Then let's go," Elara said firmly. "But remember this… I don't think light and darkness are enemies. I think they just haven't learned how to walk side by side yet."
Kael looked surprised by her words, but a tiny, almost unnoticeable smile touched the corner of his lips.
"Follow me," he said. "I know these shadows better than anyone. And Elara… don't make me regret protecting you."
And with that, the boy made of shadows and the girl made of starlight ran side by side into the unknown night, starting a journey that would change their world forever.
They ran side by side, desperately trying to escape the horde of monsters chasing after them. But when they finally reached the edge of a high cliff, they realized there was nowhere left to go. There was no path forward, and no way to run back. They had only one choice left: to stand their ground and fight.
ROARRR!
A terrifying, deafening sound echoed through the forest as the monsters drew closer, their sharp claws glinting under the faint light of the moon.
Elara and Kael immediately moved as one, working together in perfect sync as if they had fought beside each other for years. Elara used her magic to cast bright flashes of blinding light straight into the monsters' eyes, leaving them stunned and unable to see for a few precious seconds. Taking advantage of the moment, Kael would strike swiftly, slicing through their dark forms with his sword made of shadows.
They moved fast, they fought hard, and one by one, the creatures fell until it seemed like they had defeated them all.
But just as they thought the danger was over, the ground began to shake violently. From the darkness emerged a creature far larger and more terrifying than any they had faced before. It towered over the trees, its body made of twisted darkness and rock.
Elara and Kael froze in their tracks, their eyes widening in pure shock and fear. Even with all their strength, the size and power of this beast made them feel small and helpless.
Elara quickly gathered her courage. She turned to Kael, tapping his shoulder gently, and looked deep into his eyes. Her gaze was filled with determination, silently telling him: We can do this. We are stronger together.
They charged at the giant monster, attacking with everything they had. But no matter how hard they fought or how many times they struck, it seemed impossible to defeat. The creature was too powerful, its skin too thick, and its rage too great.
The monster suddenly turned its attention to Kael, its eyes burning with furious, fiery rage. But Kael did not back down; he continued to fight bravely, dodging and striking whenever he found an opening.
However, in one swift and brutal move, the monster swiped its massive claws across Kael's chest.
SLASH!
Deep, bleeding wounds appeared instantly, and Kael fell to his knees, gasping in pain.
"KAEL!" Elara screamed.
She rushed to his side, her eyes filling with tears as she saw the blood flowing from his injury. Fear and anger surged through her heart, mixing with the powerful magic flowing inside her.
Elara stood up slowly, her hands beginning to glow brighter than they ever had before—bright enough to light up the entire dark forest like daylight. She aimed her palms directly at the monster, channeling all her strength into one single beam of pure starlight.
ROARRRR!
The monster let out a scream of agony as the light wrapped around its body, burning through the darkness that made up its form.
And then, in just a few seconds, the massive creature shattered into thousands of tiny pieces, breaking apart like dry sand being blown away by the wind, until nothing remained but silence.
Elara didn't waste any time. She immediately ran back to Kael, who was leaning weakly against a rock, his face pale from losing so much blood.
"Kael, let's go. We need to find somewhere safe and find something to heal your wounds," Elara said, her voice trembling with worry as she helped him sit up properly.
Kael looked away, his expression pained—not just from the injury, but from the conflict inside his heart.
"Elara… you shouldn't be doing this. I was sent here to stop you. I am supposed to be your enemy… just leave me here. It doesn't matter what happens to me."
Elara shook her head firmly, wiping the tears from her cheeks. She looked at him with eyes full of kindness and truth.
"But you helped me earlier, didn't you? You protected me even when you didn't have to. That proves we aren't enemies. We never were."
A small, almost unnoticeable smile touched the corner of Kael's lips, hidden by the shadows and the pain he was feeling. Her words had touched something deep inside him, something he thought he had lost forever.
Elara helped him stand up, supporting his weight and letting him lean on her shoulder as they walked slowly away from the cliff. After some time of walking, they found a small, abandoned cottage hidden deep within the trees. It looked old and empty, but it was safe and dry—the perfect place to rest for a while until Kael recovered.
They went inside, and Elara carefully helped him sit down on an old wooden chair. Without hesitation, she tore off the sleeves of her own dress, using the clean fabric to wrap tightly around the deep wounds on his chest, pressing gently to stop the bleeding.
"Stay here. I'll be right back," she said softly.
Elara went outside to look for fresh water for him. Not far from the house, she found a clear, sparkling pond. The water was so pure and transparent that she could see her own reflection clearly on its surface. She quickly filled a small bowl she found nearby and hurried back inside to give it to him.
Kael drank the water slowly, regaining a little bit of his strength. But as he looked at Elara, his expression turned serious and troubled again.
"I can't stay here for long," Kael said quietly, looking down at his hands. "The Shadow King… he will come looking for me soon. If he finds out that I didn't destroy you, and that I actually protected you… I will be in grave danger. He will punish me severely."
Elara tilted her head, looking at him with pure innocence. She didn't understand the rules or the wars of this magical world.
"Oh, that's alright then. I need to go back too. I should return to my village; my family must be looking for me and worrying about where I am," Elara replied simply.
Kael's eyes went wide, and he stared at her in complete shock, stuttering over his words.
"V-Village? You mean… you came from the villages outside the forest? Y-You mean… you are from the other world?"
Elara blinked, confused by his reaction. She smiled gently, thinking he was just being dramatic.
"Other world? Kael, we live in the same world. It's just that this place is different from where I grew up. Here, there is magic everywhere… it is beautiful and wonderful," Elara said happily, looking around the room as if everything around her was a gift.
"But… you still have to—" Kael tried to speak, but he stopped himself, his voice sounding heavy and sad, as if there was something important he wanted to tell her but couldn't find the words.
Elara leaned closer, looking at him curiously, her eyes wide with confusion.
"What do I have to do?" she asked, her voice full of innocence and surprise.
