Inside an old musty apartment building lived a woman capable of crushing a human being with a single thought. A young man stood with the front door less than an inch away from his delicate grasp; his palms dripped with perspiration and his heart thumped like the steps of a morning jogger. He had brownish ginger hair of medium length, average build, and brown spotted freckles on his face. He gritted his teeth before taking a few deep breaths in and out. He had spent weeks preparing for this moment and had thought about it every day since he planned it. But it was only now that he realized nothing would save him from who he was about to meet on the other side. With that thought sawing its way into his conscious mind the man tapped on the front door with his knuckles and waited.
"Leland?"
An ecstatic girl with a soothing voice opened the door and his eyes widened. Leland was the type of man most women wouldn't look twice at but that worked to his advantage. Because he was often unnoticed Leland had the privilege of avoiding anything involving risk-taking or fear. Most had seldom expected anything of the man, and it was because of his lack of experience that the sight of the beaming girl in front of him was causing his knees to shake.
"H-hey Amy. Long time no see," He greeted in reply. By all accounts, she was one of the most marvelous looking women that he had ever laid eyes on. She was small in stature, yet her bubbling enthusiasm was so genuine that the surrounding world faded away as a result.
"Oh my god," Amy exclaimed with a sudden jaw drop. "What are you doing here?"
"Well to see you obviously. What do you think?" He said with a shrug.
"Seriously?"
"Yeah. So, can I get a ‘hey, how are you? Or it's nice to see you?"
"Oh, I'm sorry." Amy chuckled before reaching up and wrapping her arms around the man's shoulders. "I was just so thrown. It’s been like years since we've seen each other. And you just show up? Out of the blue?"
"Well, I told you that I was coming, didn't I? That I would visit?"
"Yeah, but I didn't think that you meant today."
"Well, I-I mean if you're available I thought that we'd catch up, y'know maybe spend some time in the park?"
"Really?" Amy beamed.
"If you're hungry we can grab a bite to eat too. You like hotdogs?" Leland prompted. Amy smiled; her face shone with the soft tenderness that he found soothing. He examined Amy as she leaned against the doorway, her soft blue eyes fixating on him. In many ways, she was the same girl that Leland went to school with just a few years ago. She had the same athletic build and the same blonde hair, though it was wrapped in a long-braided ponytail instead of a traditional one. To the untrained eye, she was the epitome of meekness.
"Yeah. Yeah, I like hotdogs," she said.
