Moving to a new town was always annoying but it needed to be done.

Seraphina Silvaris was well aware that she had overstayed her welcome in Illinois but she had family there; her brother and his wife finally had a baby so she needed to be there to tell them whether the girl had inherited their gift or not. After all, only a born female of their kind would be able to tell and his wife was still adapting to the transformation. It's a pity her human family had no idea that their loving, pure daughter was now what they referred to as a demon.

At the age of 18, Seraphina had moved out of her parent's īrīs and started university. She was now 22 and as many females of her kind, she was anxious. Her awakening would be happening soon and she couldn’t shake the nerves out of her veins. She had thought of travelling back to Alaska so that she would be around her family, however, the thought of seeing her father again convinced her that it was not needed.

Looking out the window, she finally stopped her car and luckily for her, she was able to park and get out. Her new apartment was in New York, on the part that was referred to as the Upper East Side. She waited for the moving truck to arrive before nodding at the men and walking inside the apartment building, “Hi, I’m the new resident, Ms Silvaris. The owner told me I would get my keys here?” Immediately the woman at the desk smiled and handed her a set of keys.

“Thank you, is there anyone who can help those gentlemen bring up my furniture?” a sweet smile and a shy glance at the males in the lobby immediately got her volunteers. The women at the desk themselves were stupefied. They knew someone had moved into the building but they did not know that she would be so attractive. Her innocent eyes and bright smile had immediately won them over but as they looked at her, the more they wished that they were not married and the workers of 160 East 89th Street had a collective crush on the woman who stood in the lobby smiling.

Bringing in all of her stuff to her apartment took about an hour and then it took 3 hours before the person helping her bid her goodnight. Locking the door and looking around the room, Seraphina took a deep breath before her wings appeared. They were huge and unlike the legends, they were not bat-like but they were covered in black feathers. Without any humans around her, she would be able to unpack and set up properly. Her apartment had three consistent colours: white, light pink, and gold. While she wasn’t what most would term a girly girl, she appreciated the colour pink.

The colour was calming to the seductress with a sense of pride about how well she had decorated. She went to bed thinking about two things: one, she had finally put down roots and had her own safe place, and two, her awakening had begun. The signs were quite clear to see or in her case, feel. She hurried to make her own īrīs and as soon as it had been completed, she began to burn up.

It was excruciating. Everything felt as if someone had thrown acid on her and left her there to die. She felt the need to drink something other than water and forced herself to get the bottle her aunt had given just for her awakening. In it were honey and lime. It wasn't the best but it calmed the sensations she was having. Dragging herself to the tub, she turned on the cold water and got some ice before submerging her body.

The awakening generally took an hour per gift. She didn’t know how long she would be in pain but now she knew why her mother hated the talks of having more than five gifts, seeing as the three she had was torture on one’s body.

Opening her mind, Seraphina called out for her mother hoping that she would answer and she did, “You called me daughter?” her mother had been roused out of sleep by the sound of her daughter’s voice and became worried. Seraphina hardly spoke to them after what had happened with her father, not that anyone could blame her.

“I’m in pain mama, awakening is horrible.” the older woman laughed softly as she remembered her daughter and niece wanting their awakening to happen years earlier.

“Do you remember when you and Serena insisted on wanting more than six gifts?” the small laugh she got in return told her everything and so the mother and daughter talked till the pain began to fade.

“Five gifts mama, just like grandma aggie!” After that, a small hum was heard as her mother ended the link with her daughter.

Seraphina looked out her window and sighed. The only downside to the awakening was that her kindred would now be awakened. Human or supernatural, they would be seeing her in their dreams until they bonded and because of that, she wouldn’t be able to have sex and that sucked.

She needed to get out of the tub immediately but she was lazy, raising her hand she wondered what her gifts were but she didn’t have time to ponder since the sun would be rising in an hour and she felt dirty. The tub was for relaxing, not cleaning her body. With a sigh, she slowly got out of the tub and got into the shower turning on the cold water and grabbing her rag. She didn’t have much to do today so she would look around her new home. After all her kindred might be here and the faster she found them, the better. The staff of her apartment were already up and smiling at 6 AM. She wasn't used to morning people but she smiled at them and bid them good morning.

While she did have a car she felt like walking today and the park seemed to be a calming and quiet place. Nothing surprising would happen in a park anyway.
