"Oh! It seems like they are hiding behind the wall."
I panted, "No matter what, I have to save the world from these monsters."
I have slowly taken out my last hope 'The Alpha X gem'. The gem holds the power to destroy the monsters in just a moment. But after one use, it will disappear from the universe. My grandpa used to tell me the power of these gems. It's time to test it. It's time to save the world. I took small steps towards them and threw the gem with all my power to them. It burst out and the fog spread in the air. My body suddenly started shaking as I heard someone's calling my name.
"Wake up, princess."
I slowly rub my eyes before opening them. Lifting my body, I opened my eyes and saw my best friend standing in front of me.
"Dear, it's already 8 o'clock. You will be late again."
I widen my eyes, realizing the time.
"Oh god. Monster will kill me again." I come out of my bed, take a towel from the wardrobe, I rush to the bathroom.
I am Cong Rong. One of the struggling novelists. I belong to a rich novelist family. From my grandpa to my father's generation, our family serves the best novels in the world. But being a novelist is difficult for me. My last fantasy novel got down before its release. Life in Beijing is tough, but someone's special support boosts some strength in me. I quickly take a shower and get ready. Taking my purse, I come downstairs. I turn my gaze towards the kitchen and see my best friend 'Zhao Ming' who is platting our breakfast on the table.
"Ming, I think I cannot do breakfast. It's already so late."
She turns back and glares at me, "I will not allow you to go without having breakfast."
I smile seeing her care for me. Sitting down on the chair, I take a piece of bread and eat it as fast as I can. Taking a few sips of juice, I ask
"Can I go now?" She nods, passing me her lovely smile.
"Cong Rong, don't worry. Everything will be alright."
I smiled back and went out to search for a taxi. Hopefully, I get one.
While driving to my office,
I am nervous as my boss called me to tell me something very important. Hands are shivering, but I try to control it, inhaling deep breaths. After a quick drive, I arrive at my office.
I work as a novelist in 'Inspiration Literature company' although I make no profit for them, they still believe in me, which makes me feel relieved.
When I enter, I see my senior and popular novelist on today's date. I quickly bow to her, showing respect.
"Good morning Lu Laoshi." {Laoshi means teacher. Mostly Laoshi used among Chinese to show respect to their mates}
"Morning Junior, the boss is looking for you," she replies, smiling.
I bow again as I admire her a lot. She is my role model in the novel industry. Someday I want to be like her, a fully confident and independent novelist. I take steps to his cabin. I take a deep gasp before opening the door.
"It's okay, Rong, you can do it." With these words, I enter.
"Laoban
Boss
are you looking for me?"
He turns around, scoffed, "Yes! Cong Laoshi, I am waiting for so long. Please sit."
I pass an awkward smile before sitting.
"So what do you want to tell me?"
He clears his throat, "Cong Laoshi, I know you are a talented novelist. Your writing skills are excellent too, but your novel again goes in loss."
Hearing this, tears start forming in my eyes. My cheeks turn all red because of the shame.
How many times am I going to disappoint them? How many failures have written in my life?
I lower my head, not letting anyone notice my tears.
"Rong, I know about your skills, but I think the fantasy genre is not suitable for you. I suggest you change the genre," he states, sighing.
My entire world stops hearing the sentence 'Change the genre'
It feels like someone throws a large rock on my glass-type career and it’s breaking down in pieces, which is hard to joint back. Is life testing me so hard?
I take a deep breath, letting all my anxiety come out. Suddenly, I recall my dad's last words before I left my home.
He said, "A good entrepreneur runs his business for profit, but when he faces loss, he tries to compress it. But when a writer faces failure, he doesn’t compensate. He learns from it and teaches others with his words."
No matter how many failures I have to face in life, I can't stop writing. I can't stop teaching.
It boasts some confidence in me to try the new genre. I lift my chin and asks,
"What genre should I choose?"
He smirks as he knows I'll never give up, "Romance would be perfect."
My eyes fall on the ground as I know very well I can write any genre but not romance.
"We fill the romance genre with sweet feelings, emotional drives, and love. Your writing style is most suitable for it," he states.
I stand up in fear, "But I can't write these. I never fall in love."
"Do not worry about it. I am giving you a month to submit a new plot. Until that goes, fall in love, experience the sweetness of feelings, and create a pleasant love story," he states, excitingly.
"But"
Before I could complete my sentence, he stood up.
"No more discussion. Good luck, Cong Laoshi."
He pushes the door and went outside. I can already feel the sweating, it's my fate dropping off from my hands as sweat. I am cursing myself for coming.
"I know I can't write. I can't fall in just a month."
Feeling tired, anxious, I come back to my home. Opening the door, I see Zhao Ming sitting on the couch with an upset face. I quickly take out my shoes and wear slippers. I run to her and enclose her in my embrace. Her eyes widen when she feels her shoulder wet.
"Rong? Are you crying?"
She breaks the hug and looks at my red eyes.
"What happened, baby? Why are you crying? Who dares to make you cry so hard?"
"My boss, my fate," I state in a weeping voice.
She feels pity and slowly extends her hand to wipe my tears off.
I slowly start telling her about what happened today. She sits calmly and keeps listening to me. When I finish, she looks at me.
"Don't worry baby, we will find a way for you together," she states, caressing my head.
I nod, smiling. I have to say no one can comfort me the way she can. Her patience and listening skills are her best things. I slowly lay down on her lap.
"Ming, why are you upset?"
She takes a deep gasp before telling me the entire story.
"After you went to the office, I felt a little dizzy, so I took a quick nap. But I didn't notice when I fell asleep. When I woke up, I was late already. Soon I ran to the office and then found out my desk mate already revealed that I had not arrived yet. It offended my boss, and he asked me to come to the cabin. When I went to his cabin, he shouted at me for not submitting the comic."
I get up and ask, "What you said?"
She lowers her head, "It still needs time for polishing."
I blink twice as I realized she lied to her boss.
"As much as I know, you didn't even complete the half?"
She nods, sighing.
"I am facing writer's block. What to do, Cong Rong?"
I pat her head softly, "Don't worry, we will find a way."
"Do you want to eat hotpot?" I ask. {Hotpot is a Chinese dish}
She nods.
I hold her hand and take her to eat hotpot. I remember the time of our high-school. We went to the same schools since childhood. Our moms are best friends, just like us. We grew up taking care of each other as sisters. One day we were sitting near the tree, admiring the beauty of nature.
"Ming, do you think I can ever be a talented novelist?"
She frowned and asked, "Then tell me, can I ever be a good comic writer?"
"Of course you can. You are the best and my most favorite comic writer ever," I stated, staring at her.
She chuckled, "So you. My bestie will be the best novelist, sell her novels worldwide and make me feel proud."
I giggled and hugged her tightly. We started our journey together, our career may not be on peak but it's still rising, shining. She is more likely a mentor to me who guided me, motivated me, lifted my dreams. Although, I do not reach her expectation; I thank God for sending such an angle for me. We all do have someone who can fill the empty place in our hearts. Luckily,
Ming is the one. Our friendship helps us serving in this cruel, competitive world. I am thankful to find a soulmate in her.
I am thankful to her for choosing me and making me what I am today.
