The plate she was holding so tightly to as she listened on her so called husband’s and his ex’ moans slipped off her fingers to the floor and broke in to many pieces.
What about all the promises he made to her?
She trusted him, kept her toxic past behind her and trusted him with all her heart. All she ever wanted was a love that gave her butterflies but this is what she gets.
She heard footsteps and though she wanted to get away from everything her feet felt heavy.
The door opened and there he was. Her husband shirtless and in just his briefs. His beautiful hair tousled and his grey eyes smoking in lust.
“What happened?” He asked looking at the broken plate and the fruits scattered all of the place.
She tried to say a word to him but words failed her. She couldn’t blame any one but herself. She was the one who put her self in this situation, she would have to deal with it.
She ignored him completely and bent down to pick up the pieces of the broken plates.
“What are you doing? He asked his voice made sure to covey the “what a fool you are” thoughts he was having. “Stop doing that you will hurt yourself.”
“Don’t worry! I will be fine.” At least the broken plates won’t be breaking her heart like he did.
“Noah!” Her tiny pretty voice came from behind him and Elfie resisted the urge to look up. “What is the problem?”
“Nothing love! Get back in to the room I will be there in a minute.” He said firmly but nicely.
“Alright darling!” Elfie heard her retreating steps but focused more on the broken plate wondering if she could fix it back.
“Get up!” He ordered and she flinched.
“No!” Came her firm reply.
“No!” He repeated a little surprise.
“I will get up when I am done with this. You can head back to your “Darling”.” She mimicked his lover throwing him an eye roll.
“You will hurt yourself.”
“I know!”
“And you still don’t want to stop!”
“Yes!” She was tired of letting him manipulate and ruin his life. She had made a mistake to fall in love with a man who was still in love with another but she won’t make the mistake of staying.
Yes! She Elfie Fernando was going to divorce her husband.
She could feel him staring at her for a while before he headed back inside and slammed the door shut.
Elfie tried to pick up a piece and it sliced her palm open. Blood gushed out but she felt no pain. The only thing painful was the fact that there moaning resumed. This time louder than before. She blinked back tears as she picked up not just the pieces of broken plates but her heart.
She walked in to the kitchen, hand dripping with blood and palm filled with shattered ceramics.
“Elfie!” Their maid called out in shock running towards her immediately. “What happened to your hand?”
She asked taking a bowl to take off the broken pieces on her hands. Elfie smiled as she watched Nora fuse over her. She was an elderly woman of about sixty years or so.
“Come sit my dear!” Nora pulled her in to the dinning room.
“Don’t worry Nora, I am fine!”
“No you are not! Why do you do this to yourself?” Nora asked her eye’s Brimming with worry and anger. “You are in pain and here you are saying you are fine. You need to get yourself together! Your life doesn’t need to revolve around him…the first day I saw you, I thought you were like my daughter. Strong and confident and now you stay here allowing him to be the center of your life.”
Elfie sat there dumbfounded but Nora wasn’t done with her.
“I will tell you for a fact, I love him as a son but you… you my dearest lady deserve way more than you think. The moment you know that you have a life aside from him, then you can take charge of your life.” Nora paused. “Stay here! While I get the first aid box.” And with that she stomped off.
Elfie sat there, her words going through her mind.
“You deserve way more than you think.”
The sentence kept ringing in her head till Nora got back.
“Your hand!” Elfie stretched out towards her.
They sat in silence both caught up in their thoughts as Nora treated her injury.
“Does it hurt?” Nora finally broke the silence.
“No!
“I am sorry for my outburst.” She said softly staring at her and Elfie could see clearly that she was more worried than angry at her.
“You don’t need to be! I deserve it.”
“No you don’t!” Nora snapped. “I know you love him but I want you to learn to love yourself more, I wish my daughter had listened to me. She would have been here today, alive and happy.”
The hint of sadness in her tone was heavy.
“I am sorry for your loss.” Elfie reached out to hug her and whispered to her Ears.
Whatever she said to Nora made the old woman smile, a big satisfying smile.
