  CHAPTER 1

  PROLOGUE:

The door of the room opened and a man entered with a serious face, his gaze was sharp and hateful while staring at the petite woman sitting on the chair in a prison uniform handcuffed, her head was wrapped in a gauze.

She was smiling gladly, but the man’s poker face was still. “So, I am here.” The man said while standing near the door.

“Come and sit near to me,” The woman said.

The man walked to the chair and sat, “Do you still have no regrets?” He asked.

“There is only one regret I had left behind and I will kill him too soon..” She said, laughing crazily.

“If you dare touch him, I will kill you with my own hands.” The man hit his both hands on the table angrily and said through gritted teeth.

“It would feel so good to be killed by the one you loves the most.” The woman said to him and the man frowned completely displeased by her attitude. “You’re crazy.”

He then stood up and left the room.

“I will kill that brat like I had killed her.. hahahaha..” Behind him, the woman’s evil laugh was echoing making the man realized what a big trouble he had taken after joining his new job….

  …

Sitting in the corridor, a woman was lost in her thoughts. The flashes of her and her best friend, Mary Rose came into her mind. The time they both spent together. The first time when Emma came to the Mid City hospital as a nurse, and how she was so quite and different from everyone.

She was raised by her God fearing grandmother. She was taught not to make waves. If someone did her wrong she would turned her cheek just like the bible had taught her to do.

She didn’t use any makeup to make herself beautiful and neither she had a telephone to make contacts with another nurses. She was all occupied by herself until one day a nurse bullied her and pushed her down a flight of stairs and Mary was the only one who helped her. Mary was the head of the evening emergency room.

She even asked Emma to file a complaint against the nurse and have her charges for the assault but Emma simply refused, she didn’t want any trouble at her work at all but she appreciated Mary’s effort to give her justice.

She took a few days off to heal. Mary came to her apartment on her lunch break every single day. After that day they started calling each other by their nicknames. Mary wanted to be called Linda and Emma wanted Mary to call her Lizz. They started having lunch together. Linda told her about her extended family and all of the cool things they did.

Mary was married to the second son of the police commissioner. Her oldest brother in law was killed in the line of duty. The youngest brother in law of hers was a beat cop, and her sister in law was an assistant DA for the city. Emma enjoyed working under Mary. She had truly learned a lot from her.

Soon, Mary became her only friend at the hospital. After three months of working together, they both had become good friends and than Mary told her that she has volunteered for helping Dr. Shepherd the senior doctor who was in charge of all new projects.

Emma blamed herself for Mary’s death. She should have ridden with that patient while transferring the patient to another hospital. She couldn't do it. She had to pick her grandmother's medication up.. The pharmacy was going to close in fifteen minutes.

Emma rushed to the pharmacy as it was closing soon. The car left with other nurses and Mary leaving Emma behind and soon the news came that the car met with an accident and exploded into ashes.

It was a terrible death, the entire corpses were burned, unrecognizable. No body survived.

“Miss Emma,” a nurse said bringing Emma back to the reality.

  “Yes.” She replied.

“You can go in, Dr. Shepherd is waiting for you.” The nurse informed her.

Emma stood up and walked in the office. “Hello Emma,” the doctor greeted.

  “Hello, Mr. Shepherd.”

“So what can I do for you?” he asked politely.

“I am here to volunteer for help, Dr.” she said.

Dr. Shepherd took a deep look at her and exhaled. “For Mary?”

She nodded her head, her tears were on the verge of falling down. After Mary died, she wanted to volunteer for help on the place of her as remembering her kindness towards the other people.

Dr. Shepherd told her that he had already found a new assistant but he would put her on his nurses list for the new project. She agreed and signed up to being a nurse at the rehab clinic .

“You know it was a live in position.” He asked.

“That would suit me fine.” She smiled and replied.

Dr. Shepherd didn't know that she was on the layoff list but now she had found another position which kept her job. She lived in a little one room with bath already. It wouldn't be too much different.

She could take off in between her Christmas work schedule and starting her new position on January the second. It wouldn't take but a day to move. She asked Dr. Shepherd about her room or anything necessary she would bring with her. Dr. Shepherd informed her it had a bed and dresser drawers. The bath was a three fourths with a little vanity, toilet and a small walk in shower.

Emma thought this will be great knowing Grandma could move into her little apartment by her brother and wouldn't have to go into a senior citizen facility or move out of town to another relative's home.

When she got home she pack her personal items She told grandma everything and showed her a picture of what the outside of the building looked like.

The next Friday Dr. Shepherd called Emma into his office.

“The building was ready to have the furniture moved in.” He informed her. “So, when you could move in to be around for all of the deliveries?” He then asked. “ I am ready to be transferred whenever you needed me to” She replied to him happily.

“Great,” Dr. Shepherd than handed her the permission slip. She signed the permission slip and was transferred the next day. She knew she would have an easy holiday season. Every year the holiday season the Emergency room saw triple the number of cases than any other time of the year.

Emma moved her personal items in that afternoon and hoped for a good future ahead of her..
