At the Barton’s place.
Claire Gregory was dressed in an exquisite gown that played off the childish expression on her face.
She was tinkering with the glasses on the coffee table absentmindedly.
Sluggishly, she raised one to the person in front of her and muttered, “G… glass.”
Drool slipped out of her mouth as she spoke. The cross-shaped scars on her face were becoming even more stark.
“Is this how he shows his gratitude? By sending me an idiot to marry?” Tyree Barton paid her no mind. He was busy leafing through the reports in his hand. He would not have this at all.
He was even more upset when he saw she had scored 50 on her IQ test.
The woman was fair and beautiful, but she was as dumb as a cow. The sight of her was revolting.
“Your grandfather said Claire had saved his life,” the butler explained.
A month ago, Mr. Barton had gone into the woods on a spiritual retreat but had gotten lost before he could make it to his destination.
The Bartons had sent search parties for days on end but had had no success.
When the storm had finally abated, Mr. Barton had been carried out of the woods by a woman.
That woman was Claire Gregory.
“So, he’s using my marriage to his advantage?”
Tyree got up from the sofa without even bothering to look at Claire.
“Get her out of here,” he barked.
“But Mr. Tyree… Ms. Claire is your wife now!”
No one expected Tyree to take this well, so Mr. Barton had gotten the marriage license in advance. There was no room for negotiation now.
Tyree ripped it from the butler’s hand angrily. He wished he could tear it to pieces. Tyree was a well-known businessman. But he was still single at thirty-two.
This marriage was part of an effort to dispel rumors that he liked men.
But out of all the women, who could imagine that Mr. Barton would choose a fool to marry him!
“If you don’t want anything to drink, would you like some candy?” asked Claire.
Claire got up from the couch, coming up to Tyree and staring at him with bright eyes.
The moment their eyes met; Tyree felt goosebumps erupting all over his body.
He smacked at Claire’s hand, which was holding a lollipop, and took a step back.
He hated sticky things.
“Why are both of you still here?” he asked. “Take her away. And for the love of God, clean her up!”
Before his orders could be followed, Claire suddenly hugged him and burst into tears.
“Honey, don’t you want me anymore? I just wanted to share my candy with you.”
She wiped her tears and snot on the back of her hands and Tyree’s suit.
Tyree was shocked. The butler wanted to burst out laughing but contained himself.
“Dear, don’t send me away. I’ll be a good girl and listen to you!” said Claire. And then she hugged Tyree. While Claire was very thin, she was also deceptively strong. Tyree found he couldn’t just shrug her off. His arm was even starting to go numb from her hold.
He hated the way Claire called him “honey”.
