At the dining table, Amelia sat with her usual cool expression, quietly listening to the father and son chatting away fluently in French, not a flicker of emotion on her face.
“Dad, when will Aunt Clara give me my baby sister? I’m so done waiting,” Liam asked happily.
Eddie gently rubbed his hand over Liam’s head, replying in a low, smooth French voice, “You’ll meet your sister in three months, but remember, don’t talk about this at home. If Mom finds out, she won’t want us anymore.”
Liam nodded eagerly, a wide smile on his little face. “Got it! I really want a sister, but I love Mommy the most!”
Amelia stared at the mound of peeled shrimp in her bowl without picking up her chopsticks.
Eddie glanced over and frowned slightly, noticing her untouched plate.
“Liam peeled those shrimp just for you. Aren’t you hungry? Are you feeling unwell?”
His tone was melt-in-your-mouth gentle, just like those years he spent chasing her.
Hearing that she might not feel well, Liam quickly wriggled out of his chair in a panic.
“Mommy, are you sick? Did I do something wrong? Are you mad at me?”
The father and son both looked at her with such concerned eyes, as if she was the most priceless thing in their world.
Amelia forced a smile, her face pale. “I’m fine.”
Only then did Eddie’s frown smooth out, as he softly patted her head.
“That’s good. Tomorrow’s Mother’s Day, and Liam’s got a little surprise for you.”
His usually sharp features softened completely when he looked at her.
Everyone knew Amelia was the center of the Grant family’s world.
Eddie had spent ten years winning her heart, and even after marrying her, he treated her like a queen.
Even their three-year-old son was famous for being a mommy worshipper.
If you asked Eddie and Liam who they loved the most in the world, they’d answer without hesitation.
Amelia.
She used to believe that, too.
Until a month ago.
“I can’t wait to see what Liam’s planned. I’ve finished eating, I’ll head upstairs and rest,” Amelia said, getting up.
Just then, a hushed French conversation started behind her.
“When Aunt Clara was pregnant with the baby girl, she didn’t want to eat either. Does that mean Mommy has a baby sister in her tummy too?”
Eddie’s voice sounded a bit heavy. “Mom’s health isn’t good. She can’t have another baby anymore.”
Amelia paused mid-step but kept her cool and walked back into the bedroom.
The moment the door shut, she collapsed on the floor, cold sweat soaking her back.
Because of Eddie’s frequent business with the French, he’d picked up the language quickly.
Liam, being a born linguist, could already have full conversations in French at just three years old.
Back then, Amelia used to be proud watching the two of them chat over meals.
What they didn’t know was that she had started learning French on her own a while ago. She could understand every word now.
Every day, she’d sit at the table and listen to what surprise they were planning for her.
But about a year ago, a new name started popping up in those conversations—Clara.
Liam’s kindergarten teacher. From their talks, she seemed like a warm and gentle woman.
But since neither Eddie nor Liam treated Amelia any differently, she hadn’t thought much of it.
Then last month, Clara sent her a photo of a prenatal report.
She said the baby belonged to Eddie.
And the hospital had confirmed—it was definitely going to be the little girl Eddie and Liam had always dreamed of.
Amelia knew well how much they longed for a girl in the family.
But after giving birth to Liam, her health had taken a turn. She couldn't have any more kids.
So… they just found someone else to do it instead? To give them the daughter they wanted so badly?Around 8 or 9 in the evening, Eddie Grant knocked on the bedroom door, all gentle smiles as he softly pulled Amelia Lunnon up from the bed.
"You little sleepyhead, didn’t we agree to go to the product launch together? How are you still curled up in bed?"
His voice was low and smooth, brushing softly past her ear, carrying that familiar, dangerous charm.
Amelia met his gaze with a calm, unreadable look. After a moment, she nodded.
"Okay, I’ll get up now."
Eddie had brought in the top makeup team just for her.
He said she was the star tonight and needed to look stunning, turn heads.
Amelia, usually bare-faced and plain in dress, really looked different after the makeover.
When she stepped out, both Eddie and Liam Grant froze for a moment, clearly caught off guard.
"Mommy is so pretty! Mommy’s the most beautiful mommy in the world!"
Liam ran over, wrapping his little arms around her leg, looking up with his big chocolate-brown eyes full of love.
Amelia forced a smile.
No matter how pretty she looked, she still couldn’t give Liam the little sister he wanted, right?
The launch event was packed, with Su City’s elite all gathered.
Eddie’s company specialized in perfumes, and tonight’s new release was called “Whisper of Love.”
Mrs. Wang, one of their long-time clients, scooted over to Amelia.
"Even the perfume name’s a love letter from your husband. Mrs. Grant, you really hit the jackpot."
She looked at Amelia with blatant envy in her eyes.
"Your husband’s successful, your kid’s adorable—everyone knows you’re the textbook example of how to be a perfect wife and mom. Come on, spill some secrets?"
Suddenly, a bunch of ladies gathered around, genuinely eager to pick up any tips.
After all, Amelia came from an orphanage background and still managed to marry into wealth and be doted on. That had to take some serious skill.
But as all those burning eyes turned toward her, Amelia just went quiet.
She had no secrets to share.
If there really were some magic trick, her husband and son wouldn’t be waiting on another woman to give them a baby.
"Come on now, Mrs. Grant doesn’t look like she’s into all this chatter. Let’s not crowd her," a sweet, playful voice broke in, scattering the crowd.
Clara Mitchell stepped up beside Amelia, slipping her arm through hers like they were besties.
"I thought someone as cool and classy as you wouldn’t show up to a launch event.”
She curved her lips into a smile, leaning in to whisper, “After all, you’re not really the star tonight, are you?"
"What do you think Eddie meant when he named the perfume ‘Whisper of Love’?"
Whisper… of love for Clara?
Amelia pulled her arm away, clearly irritated, saying nothing.
She hadn’t come to show off some fairytale romance.
She was here because she created “Whisper of Love.” She wanted to witness its debut.
But still, that name left a bitter taste.
"What’s Ms. Mitchell doing here?" Liam’s small, unhappy voice piped up as he walked over with Eddie.
Eddie’s face was unreadable, but his eyes had a sharp edge.
Even Liam’s usual bright expression was dark and gloomy now.
Father and son’s sudden coldness made Clara’s face stiffen.
Especially considering how happy they were when they found out she was having a girl. Back then, they practically treated her like royalty.
But now, in front of Amelia...
Eddie said nothing, stepping between the two women, his sharp eyes fixed on Clara without a hint of warmth.
The only reason he’d let her attend tonight was out of respect for the child she carried.
But if Clara thought she could mess with where Amelia stood in his heart—
He wouldn’t stand for it.
