"Who do you think you are, freak?" My face snapped to the side, my cheek burning from the imprint of her palm. I don’t even know what I did. She tripped me and her books fell. How was that my problem?

"You've got a cat on your tongue, freak. Look at yourself; you're worthless as a piece of trash. You don’t even have a mate and you never will. Who could love a weak freak like you?" she spat, but I kept my mouth shut until she left, but not before hitting my stomach again.

Weak

Freak

Trash

That’s all I was called. I don’t blame anyone though; I was born like this; to be unloved, bullied, and shoved aside. They were right. I don’t think I have a mate; I mean, I’m an abomination that wasn’t meant to be born. I was at least thankful that my parents loved me. My brother and sister are the only things that matter to me right now.

"Sarah, are you okay?" My best friend, Hailey, asked me, cupping my cheeks. I gave her a grin, hiding the sorrow I was feeling. Just two more months and I’ll be out of this place.

"Don't worry, Hails," I reassured her.

We have been best friends for five years. I met her when she was being bullied by the same Chloe and her minions. I intervened, and since then, the bullying target on my back has increased. Hailey was an Omega; the lowest in the pack, apart from me. We were not allowed to train, so we never built up our inner beasts, even though I don’t have one.

"Let’s have a sleepover," she said, changing the topic. I nodded as we made our way under the tree to have our lunch.

We weren’t allowed to sit with other pack members as they believed we would dirty their sacred ground. I didn’t complain; I mean, I would do anything to get out of this place. I was hoping when I spoke with my dad that he’d allow me to go study abroad.

The bell rang, and we went to each of our classes. It was a slow day and everyone kept picking on me, but I never gave them the satisfaction of seeing me cry. That is for my bathroom. I was pushed, tripped, and tossed around like a ball, but I kept my head high. You can’t break what is already broken.

The final bell rang, and I sprinted out of my class to meet Hailey at the entrance. We walked and talked to our houses. Since Hailey stayed at the pack house since she didn’t have parents or a family, I always felt bad and responsible for her. She's like my sister, and I'd do anything for her, so it broke my heart to leave her here while I went abroad to study.

I reached my house after escorting Hailey to the pack house. I entered the house to see my mum and dad on the couch.

"Hey dad, e kule ma," I said, partly in Yoruba, courtesy of my mother. They greeted me back, and I ran upstairs to have a shower and change before going back down to the kitchen to fix myself a snack.

I’m back

I walked to the sitting room with a sad and worried expression on my face. I hoped they would agree.

"Can I talk to you guys?" I asked them solemnly, making their smiles turn to worry and curiosity.

"Of course, dear," my dad answered. Here goes nothing.

"I want to go to college," I said very fast, but they could understand. They had a look of surprise and then realization on their faces.

My mum said with a smile, "Okay dear." She knew what they did to me in the pack and she supported me, but there was nothing she could do. She was human, and despite being the beta female, they still look down on her. My dad doesn’t know anything because he had other things to worry about, and I don’t want to be a burden.

"In Nigeria" I completed my sentence and they looked shocked. I knew I was going to another side of the world because I wanted to avoid bullies, but let’s face it; I have had enough of their bullshit and if they couldn’t train me, then I was going to do it myself.

"She needs this love. You don’t know how hard it is to fit in with a pack that sees you as an abomination. My mum said, "This will be good for her besides; I was born in Nigeria, remember, so she can have her grandparents watch her." I love my mom.

"Okay, but on one condition." I was so happy; I had a huge smile on my face.

"Anything," I replied. I would do anything to get out of here.

"Wait a year to see if you have a mate." My smile disappeared as soon as those words came out. A mate? A year? I don’t have a mate and I can’t wait a year in this pack.

"But," I tried to protest but was cut off by the look on his face. I sighed in defeat and nodded my head. It's been a year!

I walked to my room to tell Hailey about the good-bad news.

Just a year more and I’ll be free.
