Chapter

The moon hung high above the Moonveil Pack territory, bright and merciless as it spilled silver light across the clearing. The forest was alive tonight, branches swaying softly in the cold breeze, leaves whispering secrets only the night could understand. Every werewolf in the pack had gathered beneath the sacred oak, their bodies tense with anticipation.

Tonight was the Night of Awakening.

The night when the younger wolves would shift for the first time.

At the edge of the crowd stood Elara Moonveil, her hands trembling slightly at her sides. Her pale fingers curled into fists as she watched the pack gather in excitement. Laughter echoed through the clearing. Families stood close together, proud smiles on their faces as they waited for their children to finally embrace their wolves.

Elara stood alone.

Her long silver-blonde hair glowed softly under the moonlight, cascading down her back like strands of liquid light. Her violet eyes reflected the glowing moon above, but the emotion inside them was far from hopeful.

It was fear.

Tonight was her sixteenth birthday.

And if the whispers were true, tonight would expose her greatest shame.

She could feel their eyes on her already. Some curious, Some pitying.

Most were cruel.

“Elara.”

The warm voice behind her made her shoulders relax slightly. She turned to see her mother approaching through the crowd. Lydia Moonveil was one of the pack’s most respected healers, and her calm presence always felt like a shield against the world.

Her father Darius Moonveil, followed behind her tall, broad-shouldered and once one of the strongest warriors in the pack.

To Elara, they were everything.

“You’re shaking,” Lydia said softly, brushing a strand of hair from Elara’s face.

“I’m not scared,” Elara lied quickly.

Her father chuckled gently. “Your heartbeat says otherwise, little moon.”

Elara looked down.

“What if…”Her voice faltered. “What if nothing happens?”

Her mother’s expression softened with concern.

“Your wolf will come when she’s ready,” Lydia assured her.

But Elara noticed something troubling.

Her parents exchanged a glance.

A quick one.

Too quick.

And that terrified her even more.

Before she could ask another question, a deep commanding voice cut through the clearing.

“Silence.”

The entire pack immediately obeyed.

Standing on the stone platform beneath the ancient oak was Alpha Rowan Moonveil—her uncle.

Tall and imposing, with streaks of gray threading through his dark hair, Rowan carried the authority of the pack like a crown. His piercing gray eyes swept across the gathering wolves.

“Tonight,” he announced, “we welcome the next generation of warriors into their wolves.”

The younger pack members stepped forward one by one.

Excitement buzzed through the air.

Elara watched as the first boy stepped into the center of the clearing. His body trembled as the moonlight touched his skin.

Then came the sound.

Bones shifting.

Muscles stretching.

A deep howl tore from his throat as his body transformed into a powerful gray wolf.

The crowd erupted in cheers.

One after another, the young wolves shifted beneath the full moon. Some cried out in pain. Others howled with exhilaration as their wolves finally emerged.

Elara’s heart pounded harder with every transformation.

Soon, only one person remained.

Her.

The murmurs began immediately.

“She’s next.”

“The wolfless girl.”

“I heard something’s wrong with her.”

Elara forced herself forward despite the whispers. Her legs felt heavy as she stepped into the center of the clearing.

The entire pack stared.

Her uncle watched her closely.

Too closely.

Elara lifted her face toward the moon.

Come on…

She closed her eyes, focusing with everything she had.

Every story said the same thing.

You feel the wolf first.

A voice in your mind.

A pull beneath your skin.

A spark in your soul.

But Elara felt nothing.

The clearing remained silent.

Cold.

Empty.

Her breathing grew shaky.

Please…

Just something…

Seconds passed.

Then minutes.

Nothing happened.

The murmurs grew louder.

“She’s not shifting.”

“Impossible…”

A cruel laugh broke through the crowd.

“I told you,” someone sneered. “She doesn’t have a wolf.”

Elara’s chest tightened painfully.

She tried again.

Tried to reach inside herself.

But there was only silence.

No wolf.

No voice.

No power.

Just emptiness.

And then the laughter began.

Low at first.

Then louder.

“She’s wolfless!”

“Pathetic!”

“An embarrassment to the pack!”

Elara’s vision blurred with tears she refused to let fall.

She turned toward her parents.

Her mother looked heartbroken.

Her father looked furious.

But the worst expression came from her uncle.

Disgust.

Alpha Rowan stepped forward slowly.

“Elara Moonveil,” he said coldly.

His voice echoed across the clearing.

“You stand before this pack with no wolf.”

A ripple of whispers spread through the crowd.

“This is unprecedented,” Rowan continued. “Every member of the Moonveil bloodline has carried the gift of the wolf.”

He paused.

“And yet you..do not.”

The words struck like blades.

Elara’s voice shook. “Alpha… I…I tried.”

“That changes nothing,” Rowan replied.

Her father stepped forward suddenly.

“She’s still pack!” Darius growled. “She’s my daughter!”

Several wolves nodded in agreement.

But others looked uneasy.

Fearful.

Because in the werewolf world, a wolf wasn’t just power.

It was identity.

Without a wolf…

What were you?

Rowan’s gaze hardened.

“A wolfless member is a liability to the pack.”

Elara felt her heart shatter.

Her mother rushed forward, grabbing her hand.

“She’s still family,” Lydia pleaded.

For a moment, Rowan seemed to consider it.

Then he turned away.

“We will discuss her future later.”

The meeting was dismissed.

But the damage had already been done.

As the pack slowly dispersed, the whispers followed Elara like shadows.

“Wolfless.”

“Cursed.”

“Useless.”

That night, lying awake in her small room, Elara stared at the ceiling while silent tears slipped down her temples.

Outside, wolves howled proudly beneath the moon.

Celebrating their power.

Their identity.

Their belonging.

Everything she didn’t have.

Elara placed a trembling hand over her chest.

“Why?” she whispered into the darkness.

But no voice answered her.

Because deep inside…

There was no wolf.
