"Hang in there. Don't pass out!"
The nurse rushed Caroline Ellison who was pregnant to the ambulance. "Do you have any family? You've lost a lot of blood. It's a critical situation. We need your family to sign some paperwork!"
"Family? My husband..." Caroline clutched her pregnant belly, a sense of despair washing over her.
She'd tried calling her husband, Tyler Spence, when she fell, but he hadn't picked up!
Though she told herself not to depend on him, in this dire situation, she couldn't help but reach out.
They were still married, regardless of his resentment towards her!
"Do you want to call your husband?"
Then the nurse dialed a number on Caroline's phone.
"I..."
Before she could speak, a chilling voice cut her off. "Speak."
"I'm on the way to the hospital. I..."
Before she could finish, a woman's voice interrupted from the other end of the line. "Tyler, let's go. The doctor said the baby's heartbeat is healthy. We have other tests to do!"
Caroline instantly recognized the voice.
It was Rowena Nicholson!
So that's why Tyler hadn't been home lately.
He was with another woman.
Before she could react, she heard the woman's voice again. "Tyler, what should we name our child?"
Their child?
The words pierced Caroline's heart like a dagger.
While her life hung in the balance, her husband was planning a future with another woman!
Ignoring the pain, she demanded, "What's going on?"
The man on the other end was dismissive. "It's none of your business!"
None of her business?
Caroline's heart ached. "Tyler, you've crossed the line!"
"I crossed the line? Have you forgotten that our marriage is a transaction? You're getting what you deserve!" His voice was venomous.
Caroline was speechless with rage.
The nurse took the phone and said urgently, "Hello, you must be the patient's family. The patient is in critical condition. Please come to the First People's Hospital immediately!"
The man's snort was audible.
He'd been confronted by her moments ago, and now she was in critical condition.
Was this some sort of trick?
To teach her a lesson, he retorted, "Tell her that her life and death are none of my concern!"
Then he hung up.
Caroline's face was drained of color. Her life or death meant nothing to him...
Suddenly, the medical equipment in the ambulance blared, followed by the frantic voices of the doctors.
"We're losing her!"
"Her vitals are dropping..."
Caroline could hardly hear the voices behind her.
She felt her life slipping away.
"Tyler, are you happy now?" she wondered as she drifted into unconsciousness...
