Prologue
The wind blew the baby hair that is touching my face. Gosh. Why do I have so much baby hair? I'm tired of buying hair gel products. Thanks to this windy day ahead of mine.
I was walking on the sidewalks making my way to a coffee shop. I need caffeine in my body. Sometimes I feel like I am immune to caffeine and a little bit drug dependent. Though, if I would choose between having coffee or saving myself from being drug dependent, I will surely not choose the latter. I love coffee. So much. Except if it's pumpkin spice. Ugh. Disgusting.
As I opened the door the smell and aroma of coffee was the first thing I notice before the people that's crowding the whole space. I tilted my head as I look around my spot. There. No one is sitting. A sly smile appeared on my face before I step into the line. I ordered a double shot of espresso.
When I finally have seated on my spot, put my cup of double shot espresso, and opened my MacBook. I started studying. Reading here and there, making sure that I am ready to chin up and face my exam. To be honest, at first, I was hesitant to apply for med school. But then, I figure out that I am interested in science. It was infuriatingly and perfectly interesting. The only cons about it are, you will have a lot less time for family, friends, and people.
Sometimes I feel guilty rejecting their offer to join the party or be in the reunion. Although, that's life. That's when I realize that I really want this. The title. The hardship. The sacrifice.
"Hey," someone said. My gaze looks up abruptly to the person in front of me. "Hey," I reluctantly said and smile awkwardly. She is one of my block mates. It is Mia. "Of course," I said while nodding twice. We talk sometimes when asking about our schedule for the month or maybe when the professor would not make it. Although, most of the time she is very serious. She doesn't talk much, not when asking questions to professors or at recitals.
"I figure, you always go here every Friday," she started. Sure, of her statement. I smiled at her, brightly. "Yes, this is my spot here. Make me feel concentrated to study before weekends," I opened up, chuckling at the last part. I look up at her to see her face, although she showed no expression. She just nods. For someway I find it creepy and odd when she shows no expression at all.
She takes a gentle sip on her cup of coffee before saying, "I hope I don't intervene your precious time by being here, don't mind me," she said sincerely. I look at her belongings and she does not have anything but a pouch. Looks like she's not here to study.
"I'm just waiting for my cousin to arrive. I spilled water on my laptop, so I let him fix it," she said in a serious tone. She managed to grin at me. "I'm so stupid to spill water," she added as she tilted her head sideways, disapprovingly. I can't help but laugh. She showed expression and she is so damn fun doing so. I thought this one was like a robot all along, guess I have been mistaken.
"Hey, don't you dare laugh at me," she said embarrassed, but I saw a sly smile plastered on her lips. "No, you look lovely when you are being expressive," I said filtering the thought of her being like a robot most of the time. "What?" she asked. Again, with no frown, no movement of facial muscle.
I smiled widely. Gosh, why am I enjoying making fun of her?
"Nothing," I smiled holding myself not to laugh. She shrugged. I caught her picking up her phone. I shifted on my seat a bit and I came back to what I am doing. I did not budge to hear what she is saying on her call.
It was 10 minutes of me minding my own damn business not until a husky low voice said, "Mia."
I know I am not Mia. I love my name, way better than Mia. But I cannot help but look up. Why? Simply because the voice was so manly, so rough, so sullen.
When I look up the man was standing not too far from me, just apart. He has bulky built which made the coffee shop seem small for him and I cannot have a view on the counter because he is blocking my view of it. He wears a leather jacket, all black, even his black sleek hair.
"Uhm, this is my cousin. Luther."
Mia looked at me. Only then do I realize I look at him too long than I should. I was even checking him out. Embarrassment filled my insides crumbling my stomach into something that feels fuzzy.
He nodded abruptly. Just a swift glance at me before giving his focus to his cousin.
"Here's your laptop." He said briskly. Simple. Just that.
The second I knew he is not there anymore. "Hey, do you have a problem?" Mia asked. With confusion. I guess I will just base her expression on the tone of her voice rather than her facial expression because she usually has none.
I stutter. Twice. It was before I found my voice to speak.
"No. Is he your cousin though?" I asked surly. Not even sure why am I even thinking or asking about it.
"Yeah. The first cousin," she said it like I was being ridiculous. I don't know what to say, so I shrugged like I don't care. But I do.
She immediately opens her laptop. And we studied there in silence. Completely focused. I don't mind sharing a table with her if she is quiet.
And as long as I have a way to find that guy again.
I never felt attraction before. Ever. Not until I saw him.
