The glass doors of Carter Industries parted silently, welcoming Elena Vance into a world she clearly did not belong to. She clutched her worn-out leather file tightly against her chest, her knuckles turning white. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. She had exactly ten minutes before her interview with the most feared man in the corporate world—Zain Carter.

Elena took a deep, shaky breath, trying to calm her racing mind. This job was not just an opportunity for her; it was a matter of life and death. Her father, ghulam Rasool, was paralyzed and confined to a hospital bed. The medical bills were piling up fast, and the landlords were threatening to throw them out of their small apartment by the end of the week. She desperately needed this position as an executive secretary. She needed the steady salary.

"Elena Vance?" a sharp voice called out.

Elena snapped out of her thoughts and looked up. A polished woman in a crisp gray suit was looking at her, holding a tablet.

"Yes, that's me," Elena said, her voice trembling slightly.

"Follow me, please. Mr. Carter does not like to be kept waiting," the woman replied coldly, turning on her heels and walking toward the private elevator.

Elena quickly followed, swallowing the lump of anxiety in her throat. The elevator rode up to the top floor in complete silence. When the doors opened, they stepped into a massive, minimalist penthouse office. The entire back wall was made of floor-to-ceiling glass, overlooking the sprawling city below.

Behind a large mahogany desk sat Zain Carter.

He didn't look up immediately. He was typing something on his laptop, his sharp jawline tight and his dark eyes fixed on the screen. The air in the room felt heavy and suffocatingly cold. He exuded power, authority, and absolute arrogance.

"Mr. Carter, your ten o'clock interview is here," the assistant announced, before quietly stepping back out and closing the heavy wooden door.

The silence that followed was deafening. Elena stood near the door, unsure of whether to speak or move forward.

Finally, Zain closed his laptop with a soft thud. He leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his arms, and turned his piercing gaze onto Elena. For a moment, he just stared, dissecting her appearance with a cold, critical eye. He noticed her faded jacket and her simple shoes. Elena felt exposed, as if he could read the desperation written all over her face.

"Sit," Zain commanded. His voice was deep, smooth, and completely devoid of warmth.

Elena quickly moved to the chair opposite his desk and sat down carefully, placing her file on the polished wood. "Good morning, Mr. Carter. Thank you for—"

"I don't care about pleasantries, Miss Vance," Zain interrupted, his voice cutting through the air like a knife. He picked up her resume from his desk, glancing at it carelessly. "Your credentials are average. Your experience is minimal. Tell me, why should I hire someone who looks like they are about to burst into tears at any moment?"

The words stung. Elena felt a flash of anger mix with her fear, which surprisingly gave her a sudden burst of courage. She straightened her back and looked him straight in the eyes.

"I may look nervous, Mr. Carter, because this interview means everything to me," Elena said, her voice steadying. "But I assure you, my work ethic is flawless. I am organized, I learn quickly, and I am willing to work longer hours than anyone else in this building. I don't give up when things get difficult."

Zain’s eyebrows raised slightly. He wasn't used to people looking him in the eye, let alone speaking back with such fierce determination. A small, dangerous smirk played at the corner of his lips.

"Determination is cheap, Miss Vance. Results are what I pay for," Zain said, leaning forward. He took a thick folder from the side of his desk and slid it across to her. "This is a messy financial report of our latest acquisition. My previous secretary couldn't handle it and quit yesterday."

Elena looked at the thick folder, her heart sinking slightly.

"I want a flawless, simplified summary of that entire report on my desk by tomorrow morning at eight o'clock," Zain stated coldly, checking his expensive gold watch. "If you do it perfectly, the job is yours. If there is even a single decimal error, don't bother coming back. Do we have an understanding?"

Elena picked up the heavy folder, feeling its weight. It was an impossible task for a single night, but she thought of her father's pale face in the hospital bed. She couldn't afford to fail.

"We have an understanding, Mr. Carter," Elena replied firmly. "It will be on your desk."

Zain waved his hand dismissively, already opening his laptop again. "You may leave."

Elena stood up, holding the folder tightly, and walked out of the office. As the heavy doors shut behind her, she finally let out the breath she had been holding. She didn't know how she was going to pull this off, but she knew one thing for certain—she was going to prove to the ruthless Zain Carter that she was not someone he could break easily.
