I crouched between two cars in a dark alleyway. Hearing the loud shouting of the mob in the distance wracking my nerves for probably the hundredth time in the last hour.

Why the hell the director made Samantha and I come out to cover this story I had no idea. I enjoy a good story but at what cost, was I going to risk my life to my life for a newspaper article? The answer was hell no. I tried calling Samantha again, girl come on now is not the time to ignore my phone calls.

This would be the fifth time I had called her in ten minutes. At this point if she didn’t answer I was going to start having to call hospitals. We had gone out into the crowd together but got lost at some point from each other. I had come back to the safety of the parking lot where we had left the work vehicle while she had stayed out in the crowd trying to get as much information as possible. I would of stayed but being shot by a rubber bullet didn’t sound appeasing to me in the slightest.

The phone rang for the third time when Samantha’s voice came on the other end,

“Eve where are you, your missing all of the good shit!” In the background I could hear a loud commotion.

“I don’t really care Samantha, I’m at the car, let’s go before we both end up in the hospital. Between your footage and mine we should have enough information for the article.” She let out a loud huff on the phone.

“You’re so lame Eve. Whatever I’ll see you in 5.”

The phone disconnected on. She had hung up on me but oh well. We had been sent out here to get a few statements from the crowd to get the community’s opinion on the police brutality in the area but not to get involved in the mob that had formed in the city. The topic of Police Brutality had become a huge issue in Miami, mobs and riots a common thing lately, the people were mad and wanted change. Sadly violence was the only way to draw enough attention for people to be heard.

Sirens started in the distance coming closer and closer. Luckily where we had parked at was a good distance away from the crowd keeping me now out of danger. Being a reporter was a reckless job but I tried to keep myself out of harms way whenever possible. Samantha on the other hand didn’t care about danger. She was all for throwing herself head first and not caring about the consequences after. On the other hand I was careful, sure I loved a good scoop but Samantha took it to another level completely.

We had been partnered together since she was a seasoned veteran at the newspaper and I was a rookie just starting this past month. I had been doing small pieces like covering local charities and missing animals, but I had asked the director to put on bigger stories hence why I was here with Samantha. Being 21 at the most popular newspaper was hard enough but being fresh out of college and reporting on the activities in one of the most dangerous cities in the United States was another thing.I loved my job but maybe I should of started in a smaller city to begin with like Petersburg or something.

A pair of heels made a distinct noise coming down the sidewalk at a brisk pace toward me. “Damn Eve you missed it, the Miami task force had arrived and was spraying a water hose at the crowd trying to disperse it. I got some of it on camera but the crowd started to become too rowdy for me, so I headed here.” I sighed, relieved that Samantha had made it out all in one piece. She was a sight to see, dressed in professional work attire she had a woman’s suit on with heels on. Her auburn hair was wild with its curls going everywhere, with the dirt on her face she looked like someone who had fought there way through the forest back to civilization.

“Whatever Samantha I’m just glad you made it back in one piece. Let’s head to the office so we can get the data turned in and get out of here before this shit gets any crazier.”

I unlocked the black sedan provided by the office getting in the drivers seat, pulling out and making my way through downtown trying to avoid the war zone outside. I glanced at Samantha, she had her phone out replaying clips of people she had interviewed and events from the evening.

“Here look through my phone too and see how we can use both our information for the article.” I handed her phone.

“Eve why don’t you have a passcode? Aren’t you worried about someone taking your phone, and what about someone see your naughty pictures!” I looked over at her trying to not laugh at her look of horror.

“There’s no need for a passcode, I have nothing in there to hide. Also I haven’t taken a “naughty” photo since I was 18 so I’m not worried about people going through my phone.”

She laughed at me giving me a look of pure amusement.

“Dude are you serious, your 21 and your smoking hot. Why are you not sending someone nudes. I swear if I could go back ten years and have the body that you have I’d walk around naked.”

I just laughed at her. I had no interest in sharing my body like that. In college I had had a boyfriend for the majority of the time. He smoked a lot of pot and was a loser not doing anything with his life. But he gave me the attention I wanted at 18, and me being naive had shared my body with him. Our relationship had lasted two years until one day I found him in his apartment with a girl sucking him off for a bag of weed. After that I had stopped dating completely and focused on my schooling and career, and now here I am with my career and still focusing on it.

“ I just haven’t found the right guy to peek my interest yet, so until then I’ll just focus on my career.”

Samantha made a noncommittal sound and we continued the rest of the ride to the newspaper office in silence.
